I was messing about in Excel with top 50 singles of each of the 10 Years of the 90s and I unintentionally sorted them into an order which I found quite interesting.

It shows the songs that didn't make it to number 1 in the 90s, sorted by their EOY chart position highest to lowest.

The pinnacle of this chart won't be a surprise to many people but I dare say many of us have forgotten just how high up the End of Year Chart some of the others reached.

I will present the Top 50 of these - splitting any joint positions (and there will be many) by weekly peak, and then number of weeks at weekly peak, and so on.

If you don't understand what the hell I am going on about, after a few entries it should become clear.

:D

Ooooo interesting... if it is end of year chart position then I think I can probably guess what will be at the top. Generally speaking most of the big selling non-number one singles are really good so I'll look forward to this ^_^
Ooh interesting! The best 90s songs reached number 2 so this will be a great thread!

50 - Brandy and Monica - The Boy Is Mine

18th best seller of 1998

Chart Run

First up the 90s answer to I Know Him So Well - this was held at #2 by B*Witched's C'est la Vie. One of my absolute favourite r'n'b songs.

Considering that it only spent 2 weeks in the top 5 is sold very well in the end.

A lovely duet which gave us the best vocals Brian Harvey ever delivered.

This stood no chance of making it to the top spot behind Spice Girls - Say You'll Be There.

Robbing the under-carriage of a song that will feature further up this chart - this Summer smash was a hit in, eh...February 1997. A notorious time for one week number 1s this outsold most of them by the end of the year.

Held in second place by LL Cool J's Ain't Nobody and then by U2's Discotheque.

18th best seller of 1990

The country-tinged blues swagger of Black Velvet took Alannah Myles to the runner up spot in 1990 behind Madonna's Vogue. She never bothered the top 40 since.

Back in the golden age of Euro-dance this was a hit all over Europe in the Summer of 1992, and number 1 in multiple countries. The Shamen's Ebeneezer Goode saw that it would not happen in the UK.

Always loved Black Velvet, and Allanah Myles had 2/3 singles that weren't bad either

I really like all 5 revealed so far! I think especially in the held back era anything that sold consistently enough to be high in the year end chart but not well enough in a single week to top the charts is likely to be a good song.

Love the Gabrielle and E17 duet and have always had a big soft spot for Where Do You Go even though it’s slightly cheesy.

How on Earth did No Mercy climb the chart like that as late as 1997?

Possibly didn't have pent-up market interest before it was released.

From the film Armageddon, this persistent perennial has hit the top 100 in 9 separate years.

Billie - Girlfriend

B*Witched - Rollercoaster

Beautiful South - Perfect 10

Fatboy Slim - Ganster Trippin

...but out sold them all in 1998 and went on to become a million seller in the download era.

Another slow burning hit - most of this chart will be.

Unusually, it was a non-mover outside the top 10 before it shifted into the top tier. A performance on Top of the Pops in its 3rd week propelled it into the top 5 where it hung around for ages. Very impressive for a mostly instrumental track.

Held at #3 by Love is All Around and a song further up in this chart.

I really liked East 17 and I think I bought all their singles up to when their Greatest Hits and when they first broke up.

If You Ever wasn't one of my faves by them... though I bought it anyway.

43 - R.Kelly - If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time

17th best seller of 1999

Chart Run

3-2-4-5-5-8-7-10-13-12-15-16-16-22-33-37-30-43-62

Bearing a resemblance to the ever-bankable Unchained Melody, R. Kelly struck gold with this in the late months of 1999.

Held at bay by Five's Keep On Movin'.
