Vienna. Classic.

Technotronic. Credit should read "featuring Ya Kid K", It's still annoying that a model is in the video lip syncing and getting a feature credit for having an ample bosom. Good track though.

Black Lace. I find when I hear beloved songs at funerals that I can no longer hear the song in the same light anymore and I invariably switch them off. As I don't want to spoil my favourite songs in people's memories I used to say everyone could leave the service for me to Agadoo, as I dont care if it'll ruin it for everyone.

2 - Wham! - Last Christmas

6th best seller of 1984

Chart Run

2-2-2-2-2-3-8-11-21-33-38-51-67-forever-and-ever

Famous for being the biggest selling single of all time that didn't get to number 1. That is, until it went to number.

That record is now held by Moves Like Jagger.

Do They Know It's Christmas? outsold it handsomely for 5 weeks. It did, however, make it to number 1 in 9 other European countries.

And that leaves us with

1 - Ottawan - D.I.S.C.O.

5th best seller of 1980

Chart Run

66-28-8-3-2-2-2-3-10-21-27-34-52-65-74-73-73-72

A fine song if you take away the crowd-participation-like vocals. Being, as it is, a product of Daft Punk's ancestry, an instrumental version of it could have been released any time since 2001 and been a credible hit.

An unremarkable chart run hides the fact that it was only held off number 1 by the year's biggest seller - The Police's Don't Stand So Close To Me.

I wasn’t expecting DISCO to be as high as number one!

I like this style of chart, it removes the fluctuations in sales climates from obliterating years entirely

I knew D.I.S.C.O. had a few weeks at #2 and #3 but wouldn't have expected it to come out on top here! 1980 was clearly a good year for sales without ridiculously long chart runs. Thanks for this Colm!

Great thread Colm, a very interesting read.

Definitely didn't expect D.I.S.C.O to be at #1, as someone who wasn't around when it was released I don't feel it's been a particularly enduring classic, personally i'd say it's 'just fine' as a song but it was clearly very unlucky to miss out on #1.
