March 15, 20223 yr Author 20. "Not My Problem" (feat. JID) Average: 4.45 Finishing in dead last we have "Not My Problem" from Future Nostalgia: The Moonlight Edition. The track finds Dua pulling a Britney and doing "something more urban", with a dead ass beat, cheap synths and a random phoned-in rap feature. 2006 nostalgic it is not. Sadly, it couldn't sound more of a mess or out of place in the Future Nostalgia era and we deserved "Love Is Religion" on the track list instead. The song was poorly received upon release on Buzzjack.com with JosephStyles deriding it as "one of her worst ever songs", UltraSourRed referring to it as "whatever the f*** the noise", and Juan Carlos regarding it as "a choice". Moreover, Jade bemoaned that "the inane repetition was a bit too 'Good In Bed' for [her] liking and the production was quite messy in places." It is also the track with the fewest streams of the Future Nostalgia era - 15,729,658 streams as of 13 March. Highest Score: 7 (awardinary) Lowest Score: 2 (Klaus)
March 15, 20223 yr All of that dragging :kink:Â JID is great in general so it's a shame that his feature was wasted on a pretty messy album track :( a worthy last!
March 15, 20223 yr Author 19. "Dreams" Average: 5.525 According to your rates, the worst track from the self-titled Dua Lipa album is "Dreams". It was included on the deluxe version of the album and is an island-style dance track with horns and synths. The song isn't highly regarded on Buzzjack, and was also ranked as the worst track from DL1 in the Ultimate Dua rate last year with an even lower average of 4.9 back then. George.keh wrote that it "aged pretty terribly and the post-chorus always comes across rather drab" (I couldn't agree more ) Juan Carlos commented that he liked "the tropical vibe [...] but it seems unfinished". A critic from The Young Folks was however impressed with the song, writing that it shows Dua's "tremendous command of the quiet/loud dynamic". The track has received over 33,170,576 streams on Spotify as of 13 March 2022. Highest Score: 7.5 (Klaus) Lowest Score: 3 (StupidLove)
March 15, 20223 yr The universal hate for Not My Problem (but deserved) If It Ain't Me to walk this pls
March 15, 20223 yr Author 18. "Good in Bed" Average: 5.75 Also in the bottom 3 is Future Nostalgia album track "Good in Bed" which surprisingly is regarded worse than almost all of self-titled. The song is about a toxic relationship redeemed only by the partners’ mutual sexual enjoyment. Conversely, it's vibrant, bubbly and playful in sound, and received endless comparisons to Lily Allen who famously tweeted about the similarities at the time of the album leak. While "Good in Bed" is fun and on-the-nose, it is incredibly jarring in the context of the album. Upon release, Buzzjack.com was unimpressed with many finding it basic and cringeworthy. Bdelita described the track in their review as "so tasteless" and "like she ran out of ideas for a song". blacksquare found it to be "an outlier sonically, and a disappointment". Meanwhile, Jade quipped "what kind of basic chorus", and Bustin Jieber couldn't bear the sound of it, "just grating", he remarked. dandy* was even more scathing, calling the tune "cringe beyond belief". On Spotify, "Good in Bed" is fast approaching 100 million streams with a total of 88,664,771 streams as of 13 March 2022. Highest Score: 10 (jtkoon) Lowest Score: 4 (blacksquare, Jade, StupidLove, awardinary, k👠th, Bustin Jieber, Klaus)
March 16, 20223 yr Author 17. "Thinking 'Bout You" Average: 5.9 Just falling shy of an average of 6, is "Thinking 'Bout You". Released as an instant grat from self-titled, the song has its own music video, as well as an official remix by Decco. Dua also performed the number on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Being a full-on acoustic track with a very soulful vocal by Dua, it's not surprising the song has become a bit of an outlier among her more popular uptempo tracks. It's still nice to know she has this side to her and it's a decent showcase of her vocal talent. The response to it on Buzzjack has been, like the production itself, somewhat muted. George.keh argues that the song "deserves more love" and "her vocals- on the edge of breaking quite a lot of the way through the track- sound phenomenal". Critical opinion has also been varied. A writer from DIY magazine claims that "you're guaranteed to be thinking about this ballad all day", while NME describes it as "a slow burner [which] reveals itself to be a sharp-witted firecracker." On the other hand, musicOMH remarked that it "feels unfinished despite its sentiments" "Thinking" recently reached its 100 million streams milestone on Spotify and is currently sitting on 108 million~ Highest Score: 8 (StupidLove, Addy!) Lowest Score: 4 (awardinary, jtkoon, Klaus)
March 16, 20223 yr Author 16. "Running" Average: 6.55 Dua performed "Running" at many live shows but it was not included on the original self-titled album because she didn't think the song was up to the standard of the live version. This is telling in how the chorus falls a bit flat on the studio version and how the vocal production is slightly patchy. The verses are great and it has a nice dark, sort of tribal vibe to it however. Despite, Dua's sentiments, the song was later included on the Dua Lipa: The Complete Edition. Among the commentators on Buzzjack (all of whom have notably failed to participate in this rate), JosephStyles viewed it as "a great album-track type song", while, Theonix appreciated its "very unique-sounding production". George.keh was especially favorable, deeming it "an underrated moment in her back catalogue" and adding that "the production is great and her voice sounds spectacular". "Running" has the fewest Spotify streams of all Dua's album tracks by quite some distance with only 8,487,711 streams as of 13 March 2022. I've never understood why this is, perhaps it is geoblocked in certain regions? Highest Score: 10 (Juan Carlos) Lowest Score: 2 (StupidLove)
March 21, 20223 yr Author 15. "Garden" Average: 6.57 We now have a tie with 3 tracks getting a 6.57 average. "Garden" was the only track of the 3 not to receive a 10 so it finishes bottom of the tie-break. On the song, Dua is reminiscing on the good time she had with her lover and the adventures she enjoyed with them. But now her relationship is failing and she wonders if they will leave their ‘paradise’ forever. Garden of Eden is described in the Book Of Genesis which connects the song to the opening track of the album, "Genesis" which also uses Biblical references in its narrative. "Garden" became famous on Buzzjack after the Dua forum were forced into sending it to a round of AF Idol in 2020 for an "album track ballad" theme. k👠th and George.keh furiously promoted the song all across the site to help the Dua forum pull off a surprise qualification in AF idol that nobody saw coming. "Garden" became so popular on Buzzjack that it even received its own appreciation thread with members writing "Who cried listening to this? I love this song so much <3" and "Garden is one of the best things which happened to pop music lately". Highest Score: 9 (Jade, Frenchie) Lowest Score: 2 (jtkoon)
March 21, 20223 yr Author 14. "Boys Will Be Boys" Average: 6.57 Thanks to Sour Candy's 10, Future Nostalgia track "Boys Will Be Boys" beats "Garden" in the 6.57 tie break. The album's only ballad moment with strings, marching band drums and empowering lyrics, it's always been an outlier but a slightly more tolerable outlier than "Good in Bed". In the song, Dua condemns toxic masculinity and how society treats women as inferior. Dua gave a lovely first live performance of the song at Reception on Buzzjack has been quite mixed. At the time of the album release, Jade felt the song "feels quite fillery despite such bold subject matter". blacksquare wrote that it's "nice in theory, but too on the nose and feels at odds with the album". George.keh thought "the song would have benefited from different production", while Brer believed it was "ruined by some, er, not very pleasant to listen to yelpy vocals" On the other hand, dandy* described the track as a "really nice closer", adding, "it's nice to have something with a bit more meaning behind the lyrics too. Similarly, Liam.k called it a "powerful statement within uplifiting music - just what makes pop so great." "Boys Will Be Boys" has the fewest streams of all the original Future Nostalgia tracks with 81,095,281 streams as of 19 March 2022. Highest Score: 10 (Sour Candy) Lowest Score: 4 (blacksquare, Ansel, Highausakite) Edited March 21, 20223 yr by k👠th pie
March 21, 20223 yr Author 13. "Want To" Average: 6.57 Uptempo trap banger "Want To" from Dua Lipa: The Complete Edition finishes top of the 6.57 tiebreak thanks to a 10 from Jord and a 9.5 from Stupid Love. "Want To" went unreleased until Dua’s promotion partnership with Jaguar in 2018. Jaguar’s I-Pace innovative system gave listeners the chance to create their own remix of the song while driving. "Want To" is darker than Lipa’s other music. Similar to "Last Dance", the bop features a drop after the chorus. It finds Lipa in somewhat trend-chasing territory with its trap sound and she sounds slightly unrecognizable in the verses with the inflected accent. Judging by Buzzjack reaction and scores in this rate, it's one of the album's most divisive songs. Jade deemed it along with "Room for 2" as "a fab underrated dark duo" on the album. The Kid JOSEPH is also a fan; he found the track "pretty brilliant" Bustin Jieber was less impressed, describing it as "not good". A fanmade video for the song has amassed over 50 million views on YouTube. According to Wikipedia, it is the most remixed song in history. On Spotify, it is the second-most streamed album track from the Dua Lipa era with 121,200,235 streams as of 20 March 2022. Highest Score: 10 (Jord) Lowest Score: 4 (blacksquare, Ansel, Highausakite)
March 23, 20223 yr Author 12. "Room for 2" Average: 6.77 Another track which proved to be quite divisive in the scores was Dua Lipa promo single "Room for 2". It's darker and more laid back in style and driven by a piano. Dua described "Room for 2" as a "scary kid's nursery rhyme". The song has its own music video which was shared through Hunger TV. Among some of the comments I dug up, we have George.keh who describes the track as "a dark, broody, interesting number that is definitely unlike anything else she’s released". Bustin Jieber "quite likes" the song, explaining, "it's musically a lot more interesting than what a lot of the album has to offer." Meanwhile, Jade writes, "The moody vibe of it felt pretty different for [Dua] and it still stands out in a good way." Davidson, however, revealed that the track did a disservice to self-titled, deriding it as "an utter trash and is the reason why [he] was put off listening to this album until a good month or two after its release." The Spotify total for "Room for 2" was on 62,042,018 streams as of Monday. Highest Score: 10 (Klaus) Lowest Score: 4 (Sour Candy)
March 23, 20223 yr This lack of dark Dua appreciation -_- surprised 'Room For 2' isn't in the top 10!
March 23, 20223 yr Author 11. "No Goodbyes" Average: 6.82 Falling short of the top 10 is "No Goodbyes" from Dua Lipa which by comparison to past rates has performed a lot better in this one. It took Lipa a while to have the courage to write this song as she was worried the person she wrote it about would know it is about them. A really decent and touching song that benefits from a more breathy vocal from Dua and some dance elements thrown in for good measure. Some of the song's fans on Buzzjack include Botchia who calls it "a little gem" and "the better of the ballads", and Juan Carlos who likes "the buildup through the verses to the chorus and the distortion of the vocals in the post-chorus." On the other hand, George.keh named it as his least fave from the album, bemoaning that the song's upbeat ballad dynamic made it sound "kind-of all over the place". On Spotify, "No Goodbyes" has received 78,701,887 streams as of yesterday. Highest Score: 10 (Highausakite) Lowest Score: 4 (Bustin Jieber, jtkoon) This means your top 10 in no particular order is: Genesis Begging Bad Together Kiss and Make Up Future Nostalgia Cool Pretty Please If It Ain't Me That Kind of Woman Love Is Religion (The Blessed Madonna Remix) :cheer:
March 25, 20223 yr Author 10. "Begging" Average: 7.4 The upbeat "Begging" from Dua Lipa takes into the top 10 with a big increase in average score from the previous 10 tracks. It's an 80s-style, synth-heavy song with dramatic piano chords. Dua first previewed the song on Twitter while sharing the vinyl test pressing of the album. The lyrics describe the thirst that comes with discovering you love someone. Commentary on this song has been far and few, but the silent majority on Buzzjack is here for it with many noting its single potential. Juan Carlos found it to be "one of the highlights tracks from the album, which could have been properly pushed as a single." Botchia echoes this view and felt it "would finish the era off nicely and be another cute top 20 for her". Conversely, Davidson viewed the track as "a tad more generic and formulaic" than the rest of the album. On Spotify, "Begging" has received over 65,175,005 streams as of 23 March 2022. Highest Score: 10 (Frenchie) Lowest Score: 5 (Bustin Jieber)
March 25, 20223 yr Author 9. "Bad Together" Average: 7.42 Fun fact: A .5 score was the difference between this finishing ahead of "Begging". Originally premiered live, a demo of the studio track leaked online on the 7th of January 2017. Dua told Q magazine the song "is about finding common ground in any relationship, regardless of what bad things someone's done." The production contains electronic pings and African drums. The song was included in the deluxe version of self-titled. With two 10s in this rate, "Bad Together" does have some big fans on the site. George.keh wished the song was pushed as a single, saying, "an immediate favourite of mine and the verses are so much fun." Botchia exclaimed, What a song!!! The song's Spotify streaming total stands at 34,370,272 streams as of 23 March. Highest Score: 10 (...ready for it, Juan Carlos) Lowest Score: 6 (StupidLove, awardinary, Addy!)
