Thought I would open a new thread for this after hearing this forgotten gem on TOTP 1991!

That's a difficult one to answer. Dance music was changing so quickly in the 90s and at the same time a record would often be played in the clubs for a long time before it would hit the charts.

I bet you didn't know that Betty Boo invented big beat!

Pump Up The Volume is actually the first big beat track from a few years earlier

In what way exactly?

The hallmark of big beat is sampled live drums. Almost all the drums in Pump up the Volume are synth drums or samples of synth drums.

Maybe.

But I don't think anyone would support that suggestion.

And my original post was in jest, in any case. Not to be taken entirely seriously. It just reminded me of Fatboy Slim.

Beat Dis by Bomb The Bass is probably the first house hit with a big beat/breakbeat style sample in it (the bit after 'music please')! Although strangely for a non-dance record, Yes' Owner Of A Lonely Heart has a big beat/breakbeat sounding bit in it too in the second half of the song just before the guitar solo.

I absolutely loved Where Are You Baby! I haven’t heard it for decades but am listening now and I can totally hear Fatboy Slim

Owner Of A Lonely Heart was produced by Trevor Horn. Some of his Art Of Noise bandmates were also involved in that song and others on the 90125 album which would explain why it has that sort of sound.

This leads us on to Close To The Edit by the Art Of Noise which was certainly ahead of its time.

Always remember Art of Noise on the old totp episodes and thinking it sounded very modern, just one step away from house music which charted in 1986!

Yes x Betty Boo

And big yes x House Arrest posted above, first dance track I properly liked back then

Cold Cut also had some great dance tracks around 88-89 i think

I always thought this beautiful track from 1990 had a very trancey feel especially the section between 1:45-2:05
