I've been listening to this classic girl group album for the past few days and it's a shame they broke up during the promotion of it since it seemed like they were hitting their creative stride with it after the somewhat uneven quality of All Saints (1998). I'll admit I never liked All Hooked Up that much, but on the other hand I get why they wanted to show off a different side of the album after releasing two dreamy poptronica tracks in a row (with Surrender slated to be the fourth single) and I'm not sure what other track I would've chosen instead (I've always had a certain affection for Whoopin' On You but I can't see it being well-recieved if All Hooked Up got them slightly bad reviews ). I also thought Love Is Love would've made for a great remix package in the late summer months of 2001.

Pure Shores and Black Coffee the 2 best girl group singles of all time. Dreams in particular is also a sublime album track.

And Whoopin Over You would have been an ikonec single tbh

A funk diva on the floor

I'm not quite like the other girls

Now i want you even more

Good or bad to the bone

It's where you want to be

Can you feel it in your feet

How you diggin' that?

Do you like my cowboy hat?

I dance like a kitty-cat

Yo, this beat's flat

Also the artwork and styling this era *.*

I'm glad I'm not the only fan of Whoopin' Over You  In all honesty, with Madonna doing countrytronica maybe it wouldn't have been such an out place single? IDK, I just love it, the video would've been iconic.

As for Dreams... I've heard either it or Surrender was penciled for the fourth single. Shame they had to go and break up because I'm sure another single could've at least pushed the album into 700k territory. I feel it had a few more singles in it to be honest... as I said, Love Is Love should've at least been given a remix treatment for the clubs. It could've been a Pride release or something.

'Pure Shores' is untouchable as far as all time Girl Group singles goes for me (along with some Sugababes too) also 'Black Coffee' is lush as well.

It was really a shame they broke up at the height of their career. They still had so much more to give. All Hooked Up wasn't even properly promoted at the time if I recall. I didn't realize it had such a lengthy chart run!

'Pure Shores' and 'Black Coffee' are both stellar but I've never checked out the album before :o really should. Is William Orbit involved with the production outside of those two as well?

He also produced Surrender and Dreams. The other tracks are a bit all over the place in terms of sound. A lot of the time they sound like they're just having a laugh which I found really endearing.

I *love* this album! It's my second favourite from the band beaten only by Red Flag which obviously came much later. They're my favourite girl group too so it's the highest of praise.

'Pure Shores' remains on my top 5 songs of all time. I also love 'Black Coffee'. The Orbit production is the highlight when it appears: 'Dreams' is sublime. Elsewhere I enjoy pretty much all the album tracks to some extent. A very cohesive body of work at the peak of their musical creativity.

Check it out if you haven't already!

Ooh thank you I've added both to my playlist and will endeavour to check out the whole album! I'm so hot on girl-group singles but bad with albums outside a handful

Whoopin' On You should join that playlist -_-

Agree with all of this - Pure Shores is also in my Top 5 songs of all time!

'Pure Shores' is an all-time favourite for me too! Maybe only second to 'Viva Forever' for girl-group songs. It's so dreamy

They played it in the venue while we waited for Lorde to come on stage the other night - taste *.*

'Dreams' and 'Surrender', whilst good I can't really picture working as singles even if significantly remixed. I find this album a bit of a slog to get through if I'm honest, I wish there had been a few more Orbit produced tracks I here to really hone in on the good thing they had going with it.

'Black Coffee' remains their absolute best for me.

  • 8 months later...

I'm tempted to give this album a listen soon as I loved the two main singles from it especially 'Pure Shores' which obviously is a classic.

Will post a rank when I eventually do!

I’ve only heard the two singles as well. Love them both, but especially Black Coffee.

Is the album as a while worth a listen?

The poor forgotten third single.

In my opinion, no it isn't. :(
