My Bonnie

It's 60 years since this single was re-released, credited to Tony Sheridan and The Beatles, and reaching number 48. The song has its origins in the 19th Century as a Scottish folk song called 'My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean'. It's a lively rock'n'roll version of the song with Tony Sheridan singing the lead vocal and the Beatles providing the rhythm. I can see why it wasn't a hit in January 1962 and this is just the Polydor label trying to cash in on their success.

Surprised this wasn't picked up on a few days ago, we are technically getting a 'new' song from them this year! :o

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-65881813

Sir Paul McCartney says he has employed artificial intelligence to help create what he calls "the final Beatles record".

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the technology had been used to "extricate" John Lennon's voice from an old demo so he could complete the song.

"We just finished it up and it'll be released this year," he explained.

Sir Paul did not name the song, but it is likely to be a 1978 Lennon composition called Now And Then.

It had already been considered as a possible "reunion song" for the Beatles in 1995, as they were compiling their career-spanning Anthology series.

Sir Paul had received the demo a year earlier from Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono. It was one of several songs on a cassette labelled "For Paul" that Lennon had made shortly before his death in 1980.

Lo-fi and embryonic, the tracks were largely recorded onto a boombox as the musician sat at a piano in his New York apartment.

The constant rise of AI is scaring me more every day and this is no exception, but I'm interested nonetheless!

Oh yes I heard about that! I'm not sure what to think, I guess George's original issue was more to do with sound quality than musical quality so I'm curious all the same.
It worked well with free as a bird and real love so as long as its retreiving and not computer generated i have no ptoblem at all - except that there would be no George to comment on it. Then again john couldnt comment on the last 2 so i guess the principle was set in 1995...

I had My Bonnie on an obscure Now-type album from around the late 70s. That version omitted the quiet bit at the start.

I've head the original version of Now And Then and what is purported to be the new version. The sound quality of the original version is awful but the cleaned-up version is much better.

Sixty-five years ago today a schoolboy called James Paul McCartney went to a local fete with a schoolfriend. One the attractions was a local skiffle band called the Quarrymen. McCartney's friend introduced him to another friend of his, John Winston Lennon, a member of the band. McCartney showed that he knew a bit about guitars and, after mulling over whether he wanted to lose his status as the definite top dog in the band, Lennon asked McCartney to join them. We know what happened next.

1958 was a very important year for me - The Legion Of Super-Heroes debuted, Lennon and McCartney met, and I bounced into the world

There's a very good post-Beatles career assessment for Macca on YouTube, I recommend this - I finished watching it last night (I did it over 3 nights) and don't wildly differ from the positions and opinions, except 2 should be at 1 :)

Do you know what? I've never actually ever sat down and done this :o :o :o

Well done Jade, I may have to do my own version at some stage :)

Eleanor Rigby would be very near the top for me too, and Hey Jude, Tomorrow Never Knows not that far from the top.

Penny Lane Hello Goodbye and She's Leaving Home would be up there, from paul, and You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, All You Need Is Love, I Am The Walrus from John, George would struggle to place any in a top 50 - I know, Here Comes The Sun is so beloved these days! It's great, but John n Paul are just overwhelming, prefer George's solo stuff mostly, but the "Love" Version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps is up there with Sun, not sure whether that counts as "official" though :D

Great chart with some unexpected stuff like Blue Jay Way in it. Friends of mum and dad gave me their battered copy, minus booklet, of the Magical Mystery Tour EP in 1972 and I've never really noticed it much, disc one got all my attention, plus side 1 of disc 2, and I never really bothered with Blue Jay Way much, sat on it's own on side 4, after turning disc 1 over and then swapping to disc 2, I'd pretty much heard all the ones I loved already and knew. So that's one I def need to revisit as I don't think I have it in any format, just this forgotten side 4... :)

I'll Get You (B side of She Loves You)

Most of this is sung in unison by John and Paul with a few lines by John on his own. The harmonica is used again as well as bass guitar and drums but there is no guitar break in the middle. As with the A side, the word "yeah" is prominent throughout but this time it's "oh yeah". Overall, a decent song but it was the right decision just to have it as a B side.

I'd definitely be interested in seeing your own Beatles ranking even if I'd have to brace myself for a potential lack of George   but you mention so many good songs here, nice to see some love for 'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away' especially as it's always really touched me. I've appreciated 'She's Leaving Home' more than ever in recent years, both the subject matter and that stunning orchestral arrangement. 'Blue Jay Way' does feel a bit buried in their discography, at one of the U.K. #2 Singles listening sessions on here recently the Magical Mystery Tour EP was played in full and quite a few of the attendees hadn't heard it before but liked the sound of it. I do love the different facets of George and his psychedelic stuff with the group is no exception, like that, 'Love You To', 'Within You Without You' etc. ~ but in true Gen Z fashion a big 'Here Comes The Sun' fan most of all, so hopeful and beautiful.

(also, already being indecisive as I realised I forgot 'We Can Work It Out' :drama: so apologies to 'You Can't Do That' and its joyful cowbells, have snuck it in instead :P)

We have the same favourite Beatles song!!

I've seen the new expanded tracklisting for the expanded Red & Blue albums (and remastered tracks all), arguably the greatest albums of all time are even greater with the add-ons (1's is awesome but lacks some key tracks) and the new track. Lots of comment online about the lack of Free As A Bird and Real Love though, yet to be remastered or included anywhere other than the patchy Anthology series. I'd also add in forgotten Beatles singles Movie Medley and Baby It's You.

The excitement of the Now And Then release is getting me thinking about this potential rate a bit more. I'm happy to run it though probably not until January.

We have 75 tracks on the new Red and Blue albums.

Think we should definitely add in the 3 90s Top 10s - Baby It's You, Free As A Bird and Real Love. But then we also need to include the Beatles Movie Medley really as that made #10, and if we're expanding to the Top 40 Ain't She Sweet could be included.

So that makes 80 tracks, and we could stop there...

Or if we want to go to Top 75 hits My Bonnie which reached #48 should also be included. Then there's the question of whether anything on the Magical Mystery Tour EP not already on the list should be included - think that would add a further 3.

So that would get us to 84...

And then of course my autistic brain wants to get it up to 100... well we could add in an extra Wild Card track from each album or something. There are 17 studio albums if you go by the US list, and could do a mini poll to get a nomination from each one. That makes 101 oops.

Thoughts?

I'd say the updated Red and Blue track lists plus 'Real Love' and 'Free As A Bird' is very comprehensive! I personally think that would be enough.

I'd happily take part in anything Beatles related, whatever is decided. ^_^

Think I’m leaning towards including 80 songs at the moment - 75 from the red and blue albums plus the 5 other UK Top 40 hits (if I’ve worked that out correctly).
