I’m happy with the outcome of the Top 2! Particularly Scared of the Dark still being in the running! Like others have said it’s a testament to the quality of their material since they came back that there’s a balanced mix of old and new at the top end of these results *.*

At the runner-up spot is Something In Your Eyes, which means that well we all know what the winner is, but that will be revealed in the next post. The song was written by Thomas G:son, Henrik Sethsson and Erik Bernholm & originally sung by Swedish singer Jenny Silver to represent Sweden in the 2011 Eurovision song contest, where it made the first semi-final , before being knocked out of the contest in Andra Chansen. Steps recorded a cover of the song for their 6th studio album What The Future Holds, it was released as the album's 2nd single in October 2021 & peaked at #21 on the UK download chart.

I knew this would do well (maybe top 5), but WOW didn't expect it to be this high. Which is an amazing result & a testament to how great their comeback material is. This is quite possibly the catchiest song they've released since reuniting & shows them returning to that ABBA on speed sound that they've pretty much mastered by now & suits them so well. An instant classic through and through packed with euphoric production, a banging chorus, fantastic vocals & an awesome key change that really adds even more brilliance to this gem of a track. Also love the fact that this a nod to their hey-day and if this was released back then, then this would have been huge.

So there you have it Buzzjack's favourite Steps single is their EPIC comeback offering Scared of the Dark with a whopping average of 10.2, making this the clear winner from the very start. Released in March 2017 as part of the group's 20th anniversary celebrations which included this, an album & an accompanying tour. The song was written by Carl Ryden and Fiona Bevan and upon release it garnered rave reviews from both fans and critics, many of whom praised Steps for deliberately not conforming to current musical trends and for sticking to their original sound but with a modern feel. Within 12 hours of its release, it topped the iTunes charts and debuted at #37 on the UK singles chart.

Talk about a comeback for anyone taking notes THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT. The song faced a lot of pressure by not only satisfying the fans, but by staying true to their roots & thankfully they did just that, from the very instant I heard it, this was an instant classic, while at the same time it proved that they have progressed with their sound & yet still managed to be quintessential Steps. I think many of us were disappointed with their previous comeback attempt in 2012, but all was forgiven with this glorious disco anthem that gave us the first taste of the equally amazing comeback album 'Tears On The Dancefloor'. Straight away this went hand in hand with their previous classic hits with its huge unrelenting production, instantly memorable chorus and dramatic beats. All of which makes this the almighty perfect winner for this rate.

I’ve never seen anything on here win with an an average rate of over 10!

 

Fully deserved, it’s my favourite of theirs and was an absolute stormer of a comeback single. Had they come back with another Light Up The World none of the last five years would have ever happened.

 

Great to see Something In Your Eyes second though, one of the best covers they’ve done, such a perfect choice. I’ve always loved the original but Steps brought the colour, visuals and more full vocal that it needed.

It was and still is a complete triumph. #37 was an impressive UK chart peak all things considered. If the 3 track rule & ACR had been in place back then it probably would have managed Top 20.

 

Something in Your Eyes is my favourite song from the “second time around” part of the comeback in which I include everything from What the Future Holds to Platinum Collection. What a banger! I think it was a good thing for me that I’d never heard the original, so in my mind this feels like a Steps original.

 

On the whole, mostly great & fair results. Obviously some things I’d shift around (LGAHOMH in 20th is harsh, and ITWYMMF in 7th feels unjust to me!)

I really wish they hadn't coincided it with Ed Sheeran's album bomb, although I was thrilled for them to achieve a top 40 hit in 2017.

The comeback took many by surprise with how well they did and also how good the material was.

Fantastic top 2 :heart: So happy that their comeback gave us many great moments like these bangers! The first time I heard Scared..goosebumps.
