14. Chain Reaction | 8.911 Highest Scores: 10: (Nina West, LMFan, Aaron, Jay, Qween), Lowest Scores: 6.5: (JosephStyles)

#14 is Chain Reaction, released in September 2001 as the lead single from the group's first compilation album Gold - Greatest Hits. As you may or may not know the song was originally sung by Diana Ross who took the song to the top of the charts back in 1985. Steps took their cover version to #2 on the UK charts & would go onto sell over 250,000 copies, earning a Silver disc & becoming their biggest selling single since 1999. The Tony Moran remix of 'One For Sorrow' which was originally used for the American market was added as a b-side to this release & would make this the 2nd time that 'One For Sorrow' would reach a #2 peak.

I think many of us were taken by surprise with this choice of cover, given as the song or Diana Ross doesn't fit with the Steps brand, but instead the tracks writers Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb (The Bee Gees), makes this a fitting nod in a way to their earlier hit 'Tragedy'. Steps takes a different approach to this cover by adding Safri Duo-inspired percussion,, crashing beats & swirling synths sound effects that helps the track sound fresh & therefore putting their own stamp on an already classic number. This is a fantastic if out there choice of cover for Steps, but damn they really makes the most out of it & really breathes new life into it.

I honestly can’t even call this rate with surprises like this!

Chain Reaction is definitely within my Top 10! The key changes
I enjoy chain reaction myself alot aswell and i also think they really do a great job on it when performing live.
I’m planning to go through this on the weekend to catch up and provide my thoughts. It’s been such a busy start to the new job but I’ve got a 4 day weekend coming up.

13. Stomp | 8.911 Highest Scores: 11: (pippa), 10: (Feel The Fever, JosephStyles, Aaron, spiceboy), Lowest Scores: 6.5: (Qween)

At #13 is Stomp which scored the same as 'CR' but placed higher due to it having more high scores. The song features (with minor alterations in key and modulation) an orchestral riff from Chic's 1978 hit 'Everybody Dance'. Released in October 2000 as the lead single from their 3rd studio album Buzz & would go onto to become their 2nd & final UK #1, taking full advantage of a slow sales week with just 48,000 copies sold, which would be their lowest first week sales since 1998. Thanks to digital downloads the song would eventually sell over 200,000 copies & earn a long overdue Silver disc.

I know it has been stated by many that this track is one of those occasions when a group tops the chart with a track far inferior to most of the ones that didn't, but I've always liked this disco inspired bop that yes it is very clearly inspired by 'Everybody Dance', from the uplifting instrumental riff to the funky guitar licks & the hand claps during the chorus, but who cares its still an incredibly catchy number that fully commits to the disco sound with such fabulous energy. Honestly I was happy that this gave Steps another #1 after so many near misses, it was well deserved & a long time coming, sure it didn't showcase them at their best, however it's a triumph nonetheless.

A bit too high for me personally but I know a lot of people hold it in high regard!

Love To The Beat Of My Heart <3 Fantastic modern Steps song, love the Xenomania production.

Stomp and Chain Reaction are great but not among my top faves of theirs so not disappointed to see them leave here.

Its no secret im a huge fan of stomp, i would have loved it to have made the final 10 here but it is still higher than i thought it would be.
