I'll post which #2 albums are relevant to the next session when I've put the tracklist for it together again - will aim to sort that out in the next couple of days. (and hopefully I won't forget to include something again this time :kink:)

re: the a worst #1s session I wouldn't mind one happening on a Saturday but don't really like the idea of putting this on hold for a week for it

Bonus songs don't necessarily have to be the most streamed from their album btw - I did happen to do that for all the ones played last week but if anything else jumps out more feel free to make suggestions outside of that.
I won’t be able to make it tomorrow unfortunately but I’ll definitely catch up in my own time! Should be back to being able to join at home from next week.
With a bit more research I think Hocus Pocus by Focus (from the number two album Making Waves) should be included. Dutch music at its eccentric best.

Probably to the surprise of no one I've ended up procrastinating a tad on getting the playlist for this week ready  but I will still make sure it's ready on time dw ~

Right the playlist is ready - we're going up to October 1974 this time, covering 41 (or perhaps 42*) #1 albums. Note this is 2 fewer than last week despite last week's session containing a 20 minute song. :kink:

This cutoff point actually works nicely as it's right at the point where playing 2 particular tracks back to back would be a little overindulgent, this splits it so we end this week's session with one and start next week's with the other. That means next week's opening track will be a lot better than this week's.

Another compilation takeover in this period forced another rule change, meaning that we'll be having a break from various artists compilations after this week. They will of course be back later when we'll have quite a few Now! albums to get through before compilations were re-banished for good.

Don't think there are quite as many classic songs this week as the last couple but there are still a few.

These are the relevant #2 albums, I will have a look through the thread tomorrow to decide on the bonus tracks based on any suggestions that have already been posted / any more tomorrow morning/early afternoon.

1974

Quo - Status Quo

*I think I will also use up a bonus track slot for this situation which will become clear

This cutoff point actually works nicely as it's right at the point where playing 2 particular tracks back to back would be a little overindulgent, this splits it so we end this week's session with one and start next week's with the other. That means next week's opening track will be a lot better than this week's.
Think I know which two albums these are - the second to reach #1 came out before the first and is a tad more revered.

As we won't get as far as Young Americans, I'll suggest A Day In The Life from The Blue Album instead B-)

Thanks to all for another week with good turnout, glad this has continued to be a success!

Not so many established classics this week but still a lot of great stuff, 'Hergest Ridge (Part One)' easily my discovery of the week and I expected no less from Mike Oldfield  Also really enjoyed the little folk trio near the start from Neil Young, Paul Simon and Lindisfarne, the Rick Wakeman song was a great discovery too + I did already know and love 'Angie' but didn't actually know it was by The Rolling Stones so hooray education!

Tracklist for week 4 is ready, 44 more albums being covered taking us up to September 1977. Expect a whole lot of greatest hits - or 'golden greats' as was a popular term at the time - which means a lot of pretty old songs (and a lot of 'this album isn't on Spotify so I'm just playing track 1'). But a fair share of classics once again, including the introduction of a couple more names that we'll be seeing a lot, plus a few more oddities. And a certain song that's going to get played twice (two different singers), and I can almost guarantee no one will guess what it is unless they cheat and peek at the Google Sheet / Spotify playlist.

There are 2 songs I already played in earlier weeks that would be getting a second play now if I count live versions of them as distinct, but I'm going to not do that to keep things fresh.

#2 albums in this timeframe (will sort out bonus tracks tomorrow, sorryyy for being so last minute to not give much time for suggestions!)

1974

It’s Only Rock N Roll - The Rolling Stones

David Essex - David Essex

David Live - David Bowie

Sheer Heart Attack - Queen

1975

The Story of The Who - The Who

Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie Wonder

1977

Hotel California - Eagles

David Soul - David Soul

Low - David Bowie

Animals - Pink Floyd

20 Great Heartbreakers - Various Artists

Oxygene - Jean-Michel Jarre

My suggestions for #2s:

Stevie Wonder - either Isn't She Lovely or I Wish

Eagles - Hotel California

Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygene

The title track to David Bowie's Young Americans is great and Low is a classic album, but I expect he'll make several more appearances in these sessions anyway.

Sheer Heart Attack has got lots of great tracks. My Hotel California choice would be The Last Resort - probably my favourite Eagles song and a great track to close an album. Animals is a fantastic album although, apart from Pigs On The Wing parts I and II, the tracks are quite long and Doctor Who is on at 7:30! Songs In The Key Of Life is an all-time classic album so we ought to have something from that.

Week 5 playlist now set up, rattling through 46 albums this time (which means no 20 minute+ prog rock suites this time, apologies!) and covering another 3 years, we step into the 80s now, going up to September 1980. Turned out 1978 was another pretty quick year to get through due to a couple of rather omnipresent film soundtracks.

A handful more various artists compilations and greatest hits but not quite as many as last week which also means not as many albums forcing me to just use track 1 on their tracklist! And a good spattering of classics once more, plus a few I'm not familiar with but quite looking forward to hearing. We satisfyingly end on an album that contains multiple classics which didn't chart very highly so gives a natural song to start with next week!

Does anyone have a particular favourite they'd like to hear from elsewhere on the tracklist of Elvis' 40 Greatest to kick off today? Aside from that here's the list of #2 albums from the period for other bonus track suggestions ~
