Biography

With her enchanting howl of a voice and passion for outrageous creative risk, Kate Bush strikes an uncanny balance between artistic experimentation and pop satisfaction. In a career that goes back to the late ’70s, she’s produced hits like “This Woman’s Work,” “Babooshka,” and “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” alongside esoteric song cycles and conceptual works, inspiring artists as diverse as St. Vincent and Big Boi with her wonderfully witchy distillation of literary themes, musical idioms, and studio innovations. Born Catherine Bush in July 1958 in Kent, England, she grew up in a village farmhouse with an ever-supportive Roman Catholic family. Her two older brothers, John and Paddy, were her earliest collaborators; her big break came at age 16 when Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour helped her produce a demo tape and land a record deal. She was a sensation from the start with her Emily Brontë-inspired 1978 debut single, “Wuthering Heights,” summoning raw desire with her piercing soprano and the video's interpretive dance moves. She went on to produce a string of acclaimed albums throughout the ’80s and into the ’90s—including 1985’s masterful Hounds of Love, which veers between synth-pop, piano balladry, Irish folk, and earthy lyricism. Bush has been quieter in more recent years, releasing just three albums in the 2000s and 2010s. But her visionary work helped make way for the post-genre pop of artists like Lorde and Billie Eilish, while her artistic autonomy sets an important standard for the music industry. - Apple Music

Biography

K-Trap rose to rap prominence due to his unorthodox flow, finesse and mystery which all remain at the heart of his artistry and sound. Emerging onto the scene in 2017 with ‘David Blaine’, Trap’s consistent stream of releases resulted in co-signs from the likes of Stormzy, Giggs, and Fredo (to name a few) and earned him a permanent spot in the UK music scene's hall of fame. Since establishing his own label and independence, Trap has been unstoppable from his critically acclaimed, ‘Trapo’ project late last year, to his Top 20 mixtape this year, ‘Joints 2’ featuring long-term friend and collaborator, Blade Brown. Most recently, Trap has collaborated with streetwear brand, Hoodrich on a limited range of clothes, further cementing his position as an influential, cultural icon. Away from the rest of the herd, Trap is a timeless rapper who does things on his own terms and the forthcoming mixtape is his proudest and most versatile to date. Said so by the Trap himself “If you're a true K-Trap supporter this is gonna be your best K-Trap year” and he is a man of his word. Filled with A-List collaborations soon to be revealed, the 19-track tape bridges the gap between 2017 Trap and present-day Trap, a young man who is still going through the growing pains of wanting a better life for himself and his family. - Spotify

Weird that they skipped Dermot, not like R1 don't normally support him, the song was literally added to their playlist today? Decent song anyway, the 2nd best of his hits to date for me after 'Power Over Me' (not a high bar really but still). Cool to see Lil Nas X sneaking in too, have so far only heard a clip of the chorus but it sounded like a bop from that!

Tom Grennan dropping a bit harder than I expected from the last mids oops but still glad he has finally made the top 40, was hoping it would outpeak 'Remind Me' though aw. (Edit: actually 'Remind Me' peaked higher than I thought, had it in my mind that it stalled at like #34 oop)

Them playing 'Doja' over a new entry and a re-entry is homophobic.

i second this #canceljacksaunders

Shame this didn’t fall straight out of the top 40

If I ever hear Doja again, it'll be way too soon

'Victoria's Secret' is a song I should like on paper but I just find it really lame.
it seems strange that victoria's secret is only just picking up, it feels like its been around all year! a bop for sure but nothing incredible
Well, Jack skipped K-Trap too but no one's complaining. :P

Biography

Grime attracts big personalities, but even by the genre’s imposing standards, Stormzy isn’t so much a rapper as a force of nature: a 6’5” lyrical whirlwind boasting a powerhouse voice and one of the most impressive ascents in pop music, stepping up to headline Glastonbury within five years of his debut EP. Born Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr. in 1993, Stormzy was still a boy when grime was in its infancy, and he came up battling fellow teens at youth centers in his native Croydon, London. By the time he was 20, he had launched his “WickedSkengMan” series, uploading freestyles over classic grime beats, and he swiftly developed a rep for his tough staccato flow and pugnacious attitude. Fittingly, Stormzy performed his 2015 single “Shut Up,” one of his earliest hits, at a heavyweight boxing match. “I set trends, dem man copy/They catch feelings, I catch bodies,” he raps on the song, and it’s true that when he throws down the gauntlet, he tends to make history: 2015’s “WickedSkengMan 4” was the first freestyle ever to break into the UK Top 40, and in 2017, his debut album, Gang Signs & Prayer, was the first grime album to go to No. 1 in the UK charts, 14 years after Dizzee Rascal’s Mercury Prize-winning Boy in da Corner first carved out a space in UK pop for the upstart underground genre. But Stormzy quicky proved himself interested in more than just besting his rivals, instead using his platform to become the voice of conscience for young and marginalized people across the UK. At Glastonbury 2017, he delivered a moving tribute to the victims of that summer’s Grenfell Tower fire; at the 2018 BRIT Awards, he aimed a scathing freestyle at Prime Minister Theresa May, whose government he accused of negligence after the fire. Musically, too, Stormzy has shown a willingness to push beyond grime’s traditional limits, dipping into R&B and gospel as he vacillates between taunts and introspection. “I would be a bit fake if I just gave you pure grime albums,” Stormzy told Apple Music. “I’m going to embrace my musicality because that is true to me as well. I love melody and I love R&B and I love pop music. Bruv, I’m going to do whatever I like.” - Apple Music

Biography

Apple Music Up Next artist Omar Apollo is the Chicano bedroom-pop crooner par excellence. He is part of a wave of Gen Z (and almost exclusively Mexican American) artists like Cuco and Ambar Lucid that began reinventing soul-funk from the confines of their home studios in decidedly lo-fi fashion. Apollo’s story is, in many ways, the archetypal immigrant success story: the first-generation American son of hardworking Mexican parents, who turned a sporadic hobby into a way to sustain his family. Born in Indiana in 1997 and eventually relocating to sunny L.A., Apollo’s sadboi ballads, like 2017’s “Ugotme” and 2018’s “Heart,” channel the isolation and suburban gloom of his Midwest origins. The mostly self-taught musician got his start in his early teens, after receiving a guitar as a gift from his parents. He learned to play watching YouTube videos and covering Disney Channel songs, and eventually got a little help from a talented uncle who showed him the musical ropes. Thanks to streaming platforms like SoundCloud, Apollo swiftly turned his musical experiments into viral hits, like 2016’s "{}[]," an understated yet sensuous soul number that garnered him tens of thousands of streams and put the spotlight on him as one of the standout voices in bedroom lo-fi. Much like his contemporaries, Apollo channels a slick R&B that harkens back to the soul masters of yore, as in 2018’s “Hijo De Su Madre,” which plays off a riff from Archie Bell & The Drells’ ‘60s classic “Tighten Up,” while adding a more contemporary rap flavor. Though he’s often branded as a bedroom-pop artist, Apollo has shown impressive versatility, as with 2020’s “Dos Uno Nueve (219),” in which he melds a trap corrido (in the style of Apple Music Up Next artist Natanael Cano) with his characteristically soulful croon—a resounding testament from an artist who proudly flaunts his roots at every turn. - Apple Music

Biography

Tion Wayne is the North London cult hero climbing the mountain to the top of UK rap royalty. Making his breakthrough in 2014 with debut mixtape Wayne’s World, the icon from Edmonton effortlessly dissected his experiences of trapping, the street life and run ins with the law. Wayne’s World sequels in 2016 and 2019, via 2017’s Transition EP, would further Tion’s standing in the scene, keeping the streets fed and cultivating his now undeniable status as a staple in UK rap today. His musical dexterity has been proven over a myriad of sounds, from UK drill anthems such as one of 2020’s best, ‘I Dunno,’ and ‘Keisha & Becky’ with Russ to assist on hits such as NSG’s Afroswing-leaning ‘Options’. In a relatively brief time, Tion has racked up multiple UK Top 10 singles, over 500 million streams, frequent radio play on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra and placement on the popular Spotify playlists Hot Hits UK, Rap UK and Who We Be. Critical acclaim followed in 2020 with his GRM Rated Award win for Track Of The Year for the colossal ‘I Dunno,’ proving just how far Tion’s music has travelled and inspired. - Spotify
