Biography

For a while there, singer-songwriter Dean Lewis could have been lost to the gaming world. In 2005, he represented Australia playing Halo 2 at the World Cyber Games in Singapore–and finished fifth. But after developing an obsession with Oasis, he secreted himself in his room with his acoustic guitar. Born in Sydney in 1987, Lewis first took up the instrument at his father's urging at age 12, but only started to take it seriously in his late teens. “I spent all these years in my bedroom not thinking I was good enough,” Lewis told Apple Music. “It took a lot of people to say, ‘Oh, you’re good enough to do it.’” One of those people was Savage Garden’s former manager, whom Lewis, an Apple Music Up Next honoree, met at a boat party via a mutual friend. Upon hearing Lewis’ music, she helped land him a publishing deal. Hundreds of songs later—some of which went to artists such as Australian singer Taylor Henderson—Lewis released his debut single, “Waves,” in 2016. Imbued with James Blunt’s vocal vulnerability and Chris Martin’s knack for turning the everyday into a sweeping, affecting, relatable tune, “Waves” is a rumination on life becoming less exciting as you age. And it showcased his ability to land a killer blow in one line: “I watched my wild youth disappear in front of my eyes.” “That really personal style of writing is something I got from Bruce Springsteen,” he said. It’s on full display on his debut album, 2019’s A Place We Knew–the follow-up to his 2017 EP Same Kind of Different. Songs such as “7 Minutes” and “Be Alright” combine personal heartbreak with melodic, contemporary soft rock. “Ninety percent of the things I sing about are things that have happened to me,” he offers. “That’s how the songs connect.” - Apple Music

Biography

Pop singer/songwriter and producer Cian Ducrot first found a significant following on social media after an appearance on The Voice U.K. Quickly garnering hundreds of thousands of subscribers with his reflective, melodic relationship songs, he made his full-length recording debut with the self-released started in college (mixtape) in mid-2020. His major-label debut, "Not Usually Like This," arrived less than a year later and was followed by the EP Make Believe in 2021. - Apple Music

Please can Bad Habit go away next week it's one of my least favourite 'popular' songs of this year. I hate it and don't understand the hype.

This Cian Ducrot song annoys me.
Dermot's Something To Someone should have at least made the top 40.

Biography

Lizzo is here to let it out. Body positivity, queerness, the embrace of the self in all its possibilities: For her, the freer, the better. Yes, she’s a singer. And a rapper, and—wouldn’t you know it—a pretty impressive flautist. But she’s also an emblem for the idea that social progress starts from within, that her loving herself (and you loving you) is the first step to fighting the forces that keep marginalised people—Black, female, LGBTQ and otherwise—down. “I think that there’s a wave right now in human experience where we want to feel good, and we’re seeking out the practice of self-care and self-love,” she told Apple Music in 2020. “I think my music just happened to ebb and flow with the way we’re evolving as a people and a culture.”

Born Melissa Jefferson in 1988, she grew up between Detroit and Houston, making her way through the Minneapolis indie community in her early twenties. She worked steadily through the 2010s, forging a confident, outsized blend of gospel, R&B, hip-hop and pop before breaking through with 2019’s Cuz I Love You. She could be funny (“I just took a DNA test/Turns out I’m 100% that bitch,” she raps at the beginning of “Truth Hurts”), vulnerable (“Cuz I Love You”), quirky (“Batches & Cookies”) and empowering (“Juice”). In every case, though, her music brings a muchness, a saturated sense of vibrancy and humour and soul and self-assuredness that just kinda makes you feel good. It’s hard to argue it when, upon accepting the 2019 Apple Music Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, she said emphatically, “I deserve it!” - Apple Music

really sounds 1000% like a Lewis Capaldi song
Cian avoiding another decline, can see this one being back in the Top 40 in January now!

It'll probably still be top 40 in January 2024 at this rate.

Please can Bad Habit go away next week it's one of my least favourite 'popular' songs of this year. I hate it and don't understand the hype.

Agreed it's one of the most overrated songs for me. Would be better if it had a better voice on it then possibly might like it more.

Boo at Cian climbing back up too.

2 Be Loved   I think I've settled on this being my favourite non-Taylor song of 2022 haha <3 Just so upliftingly infectious and I'm glad its managed to do something in the charts despite being a post-album single <3

'All For You' has now had equal weeks in the top 40 and below the top 40 (13 of each).

I'm so glad '2 Be Loved' has done this well in the UK, disappointed it didn't do so in the US!

Biography

Solána Rowe had a weird time growing up. Jersey suburbs, orthodox Muslim household, parents working their way through corporate America, wanted to fit in, couldn’t. She got bullied for wearing a hijab after 9/11 and became the kind of teenager who, on at least one occasion, drew the cops into a chase while joyriding in the family car. “[My parents] were only strict because they were reasonable,” she told Apple Music in 2017. “Like, they’re black, they come from the South and Midwest, they don’t come from anything…they’re not tryna take a gang of risks.” That Rowe had her own ideas about how to live didn’t help. “I rebelled really hard, and I learned everything the hard way,” she said. “I’m very hard-headed, very curious.” It’s a balance—rebellious but insecure, expressive but self-conscious, dreamy but alert—that has made Rowe resonant, but also an anomaly, the kind of artist who doesn’t ignore her quirks or contradictions, but brings them to the table in all their messy human glory. After self-releasing a couple of EPs in her early twenties (she took her name from the Nation of Islam’s Supreme Alphabet—Savior Zig-Zag Allah), she became the first female artist signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, joining future collaborators Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock. Released in 2017, her debut album, Ctrl, put her at the vanguard of contemporary R&B, mixing the expressivity of classic soul with a hazy, synth-heavy atmosphere and a playful sense of lyricism that brought Rowe’s inner monologue out. “Even with the heels and tighter clothes and other things, I’m still just me,” she said. “I still have a lot of anxiety about the world, and my thoughts and what people think about my thoughts.” - Apple Music
