I actually didn't dislike hearing One Up this time haha, it's at least a massive improvement from his recent singles for whatever that's worth.

First time hearing the Joji track, sounding all right, a bit atmospheric! Glimpse Of Us is one of my faves from this year and that took a few listens to really win me over.

Doubt I'd listen to this again on my own accord but I'm preferring this to glimpse of us on 1st listen!

I agree with you there.

Biography

Born in 1993, London-based songwriter/producer Fred John Philip Gibson treats his electro and rave-inspired songs as diary entries. But the artist, who performs under the name Fred Again.., doesn’t limit the subject matter to himself. On albums like 2021’s Actual Life (April 14 - December 17 2020) and its sequel, Actual Life 2 (February 2 - October 15 2021), Fred invited his friends into the studio to record their personal stories and then sprinkled them throughout the album. (The obvious exception was an epic Kodak Black sample on “Kahan (Last Year)”.) The songwriter has also worked with stars such as Eminem and Ed Sheeran, but Fred’s longest collaboration is with his brothers, whom he shares his tracks with before they’re released. “It’s such a blessing to work with both of my brothers,” Fred explained in an interview with Apple Music. “I’ll spend hours and hours working on a tune, and they’ll hear it how I will, but without all the baggage. They bring a fresh ear.” - Apple Music

Biography

In a 2019 interview with Apple Music, Harry Styles shared a memory from the early days of One Direction. They were in the studio in Sweden working on “What Makes You Beautiful”. First single, the rollercoaster train just starting to climb the track. Someone comes into the room and says there are a couple of girls outside. Why? the band asks. They’re looking for you guys. For One Direction. “And we’re all just like, ‘But we’re in Sweden!’”

Ah, the old, “who…us?” routine. Harry! Incorrigibly charming, dreamboat for starry-eyed youth the world over. And, as it turns out, a legitimate force in pop, the kind of artist who could bridge contemporary appeal with classic values in ways that felt fresh but familiar, universal.

Part of what had made One Direction so great was that they never shied away from the pleasures of boy-band pop, but never patronised their audiences or fell back on gimmicks, either: Never mind the no-dancing policy; they were writing songs, exploring music as something beyond the show. In his solo career, Styles (born 1994, in Redditch, England) has done much the same, combining soul (“Watermelon Sugar”), confessional soft rock (“Sign of the Times”) and psychedelia (“Sunflower, Vol. 6”) with a modern touch, summarising where pop has been while also pushing it forward. “I’m just trying to go through life being a little less worried about stuff,” he said. “Definitely with working. Because ultimately, it’ll be okay.” He had a busy five years there. But he’s got a lifetime ahead of him. - Apple Music

I'm not a Fred Again fan, at least not from the songs I've heard, but appreciating the bit of variety he's bringing to the chart.

'As It Was' finally down to #37 but I doubt this will be his last chart show play, at the very least it'll probably be back in January.

Biography

Throughout the 2010s, Los Angeles was America’s epicenter for forward-thinking Black music across the mainstream-to-underground spectrum. There were the hip-hop heavyweights of the Top Dawg Entertainment stable, the indie-rap provocateurs of the Odd Future crew, the electronic/jazz experimentalists of the Brainfeeder family—and standing at the intersection of all these game-changing forces was Steve Lacy. Born in Compton in 1998, Lacy (né Lacy-Moya) first surfaced as the teen wunderkind guitarist/producer for Odd Future offshoot The Internet, shaping their woozy funk atmospheres with beats he created on his iPhone. After The Internet’s 2015 opus, Ego Death, earned Lacy a Grammy nomination before he’d finished high school, his lo-fi approach attracted some high-profile clientele, and he’d go on to leave his smudged fingerprints on J. Cole’s chart-topping 4 Your Eyez Only and Kendrick Lamar’s epochal DAMN., among many others. All the while, Lacy was laying the groundwork for his own solo career, updating Prince’s psych-soul auteurism for a post-Mac DeMarco bedroom-pop age on endearingly off-the-cuff singles like “Dark Red” and “C U Girl.” (That tightrope walk between R&B swagger and outsider aesthetics carries over to his guest features for urbano star Kali Uchis, indie kingpins Vampire Weekend, and avant-funk maestro Thundercat.) His reputation as a certified vibe-master well established, Lacy revealed more of himself on his 2019 full-length debut, Apollo XXI, using the epic alt-rap suite “Like me” to address his bisexuality and fear of coming out. But that sort of candor is perfectly suited to his musical m.o.—whether he’s beatmaking on his phone or opening his heart, Lacy always puts a premium on honesty and intimacy. - Apple Music

Biography

When George Miller became the first Asian-born solo artist to top the hip-hop and R&B charts in late 2018, his feelings were mixed. On the one hand, he was proud—who wouldn’t be? Not only were people listening to his music, but he’d also become the face of something bigger than himself, a new chapter in the changing narrative of race and representation in pop music. On the other hand, it wasn’t like he’d ever thought of himself as an Asian artist before—just an artist. Still, he considered himself a guest of the culture. And like any good guest, he wanted to carry himself with respect. Or, as he once joked, to take off his shoes when he came into the house.

Born in Osaka in 1992, Miller got his start as the creator of two irreverent and highly popular YouTube personalities, Filthy Frank and Pink Guy—projects that didn’t necessarily reflect his artistic ambitions, but proved his firm handle on the fluid vernacular of internet culture. Since debuting Joji in late 2017, Miller has become a key voice in a clique of younger hip-hop and R&B artists—including his peers in the 88rising collective—who have managed to connect as seamlessly with Asian audiences as with American ones, a reflection of both the changing demographics of global culture and the border-free nature of life online. And his music—moody, downcast ballads and sleek electro-pop—only underscores the idea that in an increasingly digital world, where you’re from is less important than what you’re into. - Apple Music

Biography

Hailing from West London's Mozart Estate, Marvin William Bailey lived the street life as part of the Harrow Road Boys -- before translating his struggle-led lifestyle to the mic under the alias of Fredo. Delivering his verses in a blunt, almost effortless style, the rapper produced radio anthems and underground classics in equal measure, finding his biggest success alongside Dave on the #1-charting "Funky Friday." Few debut singles have as much impact as Fredo's "They Ain't 100": marking not only Bailey's first single, but his first time on the mic, the 2016 track received millions of streams across the UK, swiftly landing an OVO Sound Radio co-sign from Canadian superstar Drake. The same year, he released two further singles - the swaggering "TrapSpot" and bassy "Pattern Gang" - before featuring on the remix to Kojo Funds and Abra Cadabra's "Dun Talkin" alongside Yxng Bane, Frisco, and JME. With a forthright, almost-spoken delivery, Fredo's narratives embraced the authentic experiences of the Harrow Road Boyz, capped off with the heavy, swaggering soundscapes of the mid-2010s trap scene.

Soon, Fredo was building the foundations for his debut mixtape. In early 2017, the rapper dropped the brash "Get the Pot," while an appearance on the Fire in the Booth freestyle series cemented him as one of the city's hottest rising talents. The tape, titled Get Rich or Get Recalled, arrived in March that year: lacing the bravado of his work thus far with a smattering of conflicted street tales, Fredo's debut tape provided the high-stakes narratives and blunt-force braggadocio fans had come to expect from the West London talent. Sophomore tape Tables Turn arrived just a year later, taking a noticeably more radio-ready tone with traces of afroswing and a feature from Hackney's Not3s. Yet it was a quick pair of singles that soon turned Fredo from hot talent into national superstar: an appearance on Stay Flee Get Lizzy's "Ay Caramba" provided the rapper his first top-40 appearance, before Dave collaboration "Funky Friday" landed Fredo the coveted #1 spot in October 2018. A modern classic of the UK rap scene, the track saw both MCs trade slick, cocky bars over a minimal beat, marking both artists' first chart-topping appearance.

Moving into 2019, Fredo used his newfound momentum to drop debut album Third Avenue, which painted a rounded picture of the MC and produced top-40 hits "All I Ever Wanted" (with Dave, #15) and "BMT" (#25). Another major success came just a few months later with MIST collaboration "So High," a bouncy, club-led banger that peaked at the #7 spot on the UK charts. After closing out the year with a show-stopping appearance on Daily Duppy, as well as charting singles "Netflix & Chill" (#13) and "I'm the One" (#39), the MC set to work on his sophomore album, Money Can't Buy Happiness. Previewed by anthems including "Scorpion" (#37), "Back to Basics" (#20), and third Dave collaboration "Money Talks" (#3), Fredo's second tape marked new directions for the stalwart MC - such as his UK drill debut - while continuing to deliver the weighty trap on which he built his name. - Apple Music
