Tears on my pillow - Week 1

This week the challenger was predictably the new Kylie Minogue single “Tears On My Pillow”, a cover of 1958 Little Anthony & The Imperials No 4 US hit which failed to chart here. It features not only on Minogue’s last album “Enjoy Yourself” but also on the soundtrack to her first feature film “The Delinquents” which opened here on Boxing Day to moderate success. It’s Kylie’s 9th single and a ninth top 5 hit to boot as it debuts at No 2 with sales of 35,000, the album has spent its first 14 weeks in the top 6 amassing sales of 900,000 so far.

Tears on my pillow - Week 2

There was no fight back for New Kids On The Block this week as they get roundly defeated and fall 1-2 (52,000) though you’ll note they are still increasing sales wise! Instead nothing could prevent a fourth chart topper for Kylie Minogue and “Tears On My Pillow” as she becomes only the second female act to score as many chart toppers, the only lady ahead of her? Madonna of course on 6 No 1’s so far. It is also S/A/W’s 13th chart topper with a change of decade not appearing to hamper their ability to score big hits, this production bumps 2-1 (61,000), and at 2 minutes 28 seconds it’s also the shortest chart topper since the Specials ten years ago.

1- TEARS ON MY PILLOW- Kylie Minogue (61,000)

2- HANGIN TOUGH- New Kids On The Block (52,000)

Tears on my pillow - Week 3

Nothing Compares 2 Sinead O’Connor this week as copies of her single flew off the shelves after a live TOTP performance of the song saw 85,000 copies change hands this week. It climbs 3-1 to easily become the third chart topper of the 90s as the turnaround rate at the top is quite ferocious. That’s bad news for Kylie Minogue who slumps 1-2 (51,000) after losing just 5% saleswise.

1 - NOTHING COMPARES 2 U- Sinead O’Connor (85,000)

2- TEARS ON MY PILLOW- Kylie Minogue (51,000)

3- GET UP (BEFORE THE NIGHT IS OVER)- Technotronic (44,000)

4- GOT TO HAVE YOUR LOVE- Mantronix (40,000)

5- TOUCH ME- 49ers (27,000)

7- HANGIN TOUGH- New Kids On The Block (26,000)

8- YOU MAKE ME FEEL (MIGHTY REAL)- Jimmy Somerville (24,000)

9- HAPPENIN ALL OVER AGAIN- Lonnie Gordon (18,000)

10- I WISH IT WOULD RAIN DOWN ON ME- Phil Collins (18,000

Tears on my pillow - Week 4

More S/A/W related hits dominate the top 5 with the men themselves seeing Lonnie Gordon sprint 9-4 (35,000) to compensate for Kylie’s continued descent 2-3 (47,000). Phil Collins rises 10-7 (25,000) as everything else heads south, that includes Mantronix 4-5 (31,000), 49ers 5-6 (25,000) and Halo James flop 6-8 (23,000).

1- NOTHING COMPARES 2 U- Sinead O’Connor (119,000)

2- GET UP (BEFORE THE NIGHT IS OVER)- Technotronic (52,000)

3- TEARS ON MY PILLOW- Kylie Minogue (47,000)

4- HAPPENIN ALL OVER AGAIN- Lonnie Gordon (35,000)

5- GOT TO HAVE YOUR LOVE- Mantronix (31,000)

6- TOUCH ME- 49ers (25,000)

7- I WISH IT WOULD RAIN DOWN- Phil Collins (25,000)

8- COULD HAVE TOLD YOU SO- Halo James (23,000)

9- WALK ON BY- Sybil (22,000)

10- INSTANT REPLAY- Yell! (19,000)

Tears on my pillow - Week 5

In other news Lonnie Gordon sticks at No 4 (36,000) whilst Sybil climbs 9-6 (25,000) to make her version of “Walk On By” the highest charting one, that rise leaves Phil Collins stranded at No 7 (25,000). Mantronix tumble 5-8 (24,000) whilst Kylie Minogue doesn’t have a soft landing as she slumps 3-9 (20,000)

7- I WISH IT WOULD RAIN DOWN- Phil Collins (25,000)

Better the devil you know - Week 1

Below Madonna is the heir apparent (at present) to her title, Kylie Minogue. Her 10th single also becomes her 10th top 5 hit as it crashes into the charts at No 5 (32,000), it again comes from the pens of S/A/W who seem to be losing their touch with their other acts with Minogue back again as their biggest act with the recent downturn in the fate of Donovan. The track is allegedly written about her relationship with Michael Hutchence which has attracted considerable press attention over the course of this year and has garnered more than usual praise from the critics who are liking the more sophisticated angle to her music and comes with a racier than normal promo from the Neighbours star.

1 - KILLER- Adamski (62,000)

2- DIRTY CASH- Adventures Of Stevie V (49,000)

3- OPPOSITES ATTRACT- Paula Abdul Duet with Wild Pair (45,000)

4- VOGUE- Madonna (44,000)

5- BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW- Kylie Minogue (32,000)

6- A DREAM’S A DREAM- Soul II Soul (27,000)

7- BLACK VELVET- Alannah Myles (23,000)

8- COVER GIRL- New Kids On The Block (23,000)

9- KINGSTON TOWN- UB40 (21,000)

10- THE POWER- Snap! (21,000)

Better the devil you know - Week 2

“Killer” finished off the competition easily this week extending its sales to an impressive 89,000 copies to now hold a commanding lead at the top of the charts, Kylie Minogue does zoom 5-2 but only managed to increase her sales by 41% to 45,000 with the possibility of a fifth chart topper in “Better The Devil You Know” a distant prospect. Indeed she only just managed to squeeze past Adventures of Stevie V (44,000) at the death so should consider herself lucky.

1- KILLER- Adamski (89,000)

2- BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW- Kylie Minogue (45,000)

3- DIRTY CASH- Adventures Of Stevie V (44,000)

9- A DREAM’S A DREAM- Soul II Soul (17,000)

10- WON’T TALK ABOUT IT- Beats International Ft Lindy Layton (17,000)

Better the devil you know - Week 3

“Killer” looks to be slowing but its commanding lead at the top last week means that even that can’t prevent it securing a third week at the top with a further 69,000 copies finding buyers, that brings its cumulative total to 316,000 easing itself into the top 10 YTD. Kylie does close the gap nominally as she suffered a smaller decrease of 8% to 41,000

1 - KILLER- Adamski (69,000)

2- BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW- Kylie Minogue (41,000)

8- VOGUE- Madonna (22,000)

9- WON’T TALK ABOUT IT- Beats International Ft Lindy Layton (19,000)

10- TAKE YOUR TIME- Mantronix (18,000)

Better the devil you know - Week 4

The arrival of EnglandNewOrder means bad news for Kylie who slips 2-3 (36,000) and for Adventures Of Stevie V who similarly slip a place 3-4 (30,000).

9- VOGUE- Madonna (17,000)

10- HOW CAN WE BE LOVERS- Michael Bolton (17,000)

Better the devil you know - Week 5

Don Pablo’s Animals “Venus” rises 7-4 (34,000) but will have trouble continuing to climb given how far it is behind the top 3, everything else is on the slide, The Adventures Of Stevie V fall 4-5 (26,000), Kylie ebbs 3-6 (23,000), En Vogue are out of fashion 5-7 (22,000) and The Chimes are lost 6-10 (19,000)

Step back in time - Week 1

Debuting at No 9 this week is Kylie’s 11th release “Step Back In Time” and is the second single from Kylie’s third album “Rhythm Of Love” which hits the shops in 3 weeks’ time. All of Kylie’s singles have made the top ten but this is the 7th to arrive there immediately, as usual it comes from the pen of S/A/W whose other acts have mostly failed to maintain their pace or flopped from the off, Minogue for the time being at least, is bucking that trend after selling 23,000.

1 - UNCHAINED MELODY- Righteous Brothers (157,000)

Heading down are Beautiful South 2-4 (44,000), Berlin 3-7 (36,000), Kylie drops 4-8 (34,000), Belinda Carlisle collapses 6-9 (24,000) and Whitney dips 7-10 (21,000) as her new album debuts surprisingly low at No 6!

What do I have to do - Week 1

Speaking of Kylie she’s back with her 12th single and a 12th Top 10 hit “What Do I Have To Do” and is another S/A/W written and produced composition, it pounces 11-7 (32,000) which must come as a relieve to the ailing producers who have lost their deft touch of previous times. It was originally intended as the second single from “Rhythm Of Love” until bypassed by “Step Back In Time” but is certainly evidence that S/A/W are trying to adapt their sound to the changing market. The video features her little sister Dannii, who is already a popstar herself down under and will be hitting our shores shortly though you can already see her in “Home And Away” nightly, and model Zane O’Donell who is popularly rumoured to be her new boyfriend!

Nomad rise 4-3 (39,000) this week and carry Praise with them 5-4 (28,000) as both move above the falling 2 In A Room 3-5 (27,000). Kylie seems to be struggling with “What Do I Have To Do” inching 7-6 (26,000) but it loses sales and could be her first single to miss the top 5, meanwhile EMF retire 6-8 (20,000) and Soho lose ground 8-9 (20,000).

1 - DO THE BARTMAN- The Simpsons (60,000)

Shocked - Week 1

Sisters Dannii & Kylie Minogue narrowly fail to become the first sisters to have simultaneous top 10 solo hits as “$uccess” holds at No 11 for Dannii whilst Kylie’s “Shocked” debuts straight in at No 10 (21,000). It’s a 13th single for Kylie and a 13th top 10 single the best start to any chart career ever! The single version has been remixed by DNA and marks the first time that a Kylie single has been issued which is not mixed by S/A/W in its main format, it’s also the first single to be available in picture disk by the star, neither fact is helping the album which is still missing from the top 75, it will be re-issued in a fortnight in a gold edition with additional mixes including this one.

1 - - THE SHOOP SHOOP SONG (IT’S IN HIS KISS)- Cher (48,000)

If you were with me now - Week 1

When it debuted at No 19 last week “If You Were With Me Now” became the lowest debuting Kylie Minogue single since her introductory single “I Should Be So Lucky” in 1988. Coupled with the No 16 peak of her last single “Word Is Out” it all pointed to a career in trouble and ever diminishing chart returns, but her new single zooms 19-7 (23,000) to become a 14th top 10 single from 15 attempts, it’s actually a duet with US singer Keith Washington who has his first hit but clearly it’s Kylie selling this song, she doesn’t appear to be able to sell albums any longer with her fourth LP “Let’s Get To It” peaking at No 15 and slumping 18-27 this week.

If you were with me now - Week 2

Unlimited rebound 3-2 (40,000) though they lose ground on Reeves & The Wonder Stuff, Kylie & Keith float 7-4 (30,000) making it her biggest single of 1991. A couple of falling chart toppers up next, U2 drop 2-5 (28,000) and with the single now deleted it should hurtle south, and Bryan Adams is also descends 4-6 (27,000). Kiri Te Kanawa ebbs 5-7 (25,000) with Genesis bounding back 6-9 (20,000) as their album “We Can’t Dance” in the shops this week. Next week sees the return of Michael Jackson.

Give me just a little more time - Week 1

Onto the highest new entry of the week and that belongs to Kylie Minogue with her 7th single to debut inside the top 5 but first in two years. “Give Me Just A Little More Time” is a cover of the 1970 No 3 hit by Chairman Of The Board and written by the legendary Holland-Dozier-Holland, it got an added boost when it was chosen to be used in the current Accurist watch advert which helps to explain the high new entry at No 5 (22,000).

1 - GOODNIGHT GIRL- Wet wet wet (41,000)

2- BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY/ THESE ARE THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES- Queen (39,000)

10- JUSTIFIED AND ANCIENT- The KLF/ Tammy Wynette (15,000)

Give me just a little more time - Week 2

Two tracks make big leaps right behind the Wets, Kylie Minogue strikes 5-2 (34,000) and 2 Unlimited fly 9-3 (29,000) but in reality they are far too far away to pose a threat to the current chart topper with the only hope on the horizon the arrival of the wets album in a few weeks. For Minogue it gives her recent chart peaks of No 16, 4, and now 2- she seems back in favour.

1 - GOODNIGHT GIRL- Wet wet wet (63,000)

2 - GIVE ME JUST A LITTLE MORE TIME- Kylie Minogue (34,000)

3- TWILIGHT ZONE- 2 Unlimited (29,000)

8- WELCOME TO THE CHEAP SEATS E..P- Wonder Stuff (21,000)

9- I CAN’T DANCE- Genesis (17,000)

10- STAY- Shakespears Sister (16,000)

Give me just a little more time - Week 3

The single still has a substantive lead at the top of the charts though it is reduced from 29,000 to 17,000 over the new runner up 2 Unlimited with “Twilight Zone” which sold 33,000 last week. It marks the second No 2 single from 2 releases for the Dutch duo and bodes well for the release of their album in a few weeks, we’ll see if dance acts can sell albums. That single replaces Kylie Minogue’s “Give Me Just A Little More Time” as it falls 2-3 (30,000), it becomes Minogue’s 6th single to peak at that position and also the second time she’s had to play second fiddle to Wet Wet Wet whose “With A Little Help From My Friends” held “Got To Be Certain” off No 1 four years ago.

1 - GOODNIGHT GIRL- Wet, wet, wet (50,000)

2- TWILIGHT ZONE- 2 Unlimited (33,000)

3- GIVE ME JUST A LITTLE MORE TIME- Kylie Minogue (30,000)

4- I’M DOING FINE NOW- The Pasadenas (28,000)

5- I WONDER WHY- Curtis Stygers (25,000)

6- STAY- Shakespears Sister (24,000)

7- THE BOUNCER- Kicks Like A Mule (20,000)

8- I CAN’T DANCE- Genesis (15,000)

9- GOD GAVE ROCK N ROLL TO YOU II- Kiss (14,000)

10- BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY/ THESE ARE THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES- Queen (13,000)

Give me just a little more time - Week 4

In other news the Wets have new challengers with Shakespears Sister moving 6-2 (35,000) and looking like next week’s chart topper unless something unforeseen happens, 2 Unlimited slip back 2-3 (32,000) and the Pasadena’s get stuck at No 4 (30,000). Curtis Stigers maintains No 5 (22,000) though he’s losing sales unlike The Pasadenas, Kylie drops 3-7 (20,000) and Kicks Like A Mule dissipate 7-8 (16,000).

1- GOODNIGHT GIRL- Wet wet wet (45,000)

2- STAY- Shakespears Sister (35,000)

3- TWILIGHT ZONE- 2 Unlimited (32,000)

4- I’M DOING FINE NOW- The Pasadenas (30,000)

5- I WONDER WHY- Curtis Stigers (22,000)

6- REMEMBER THE TIME- Michael Jackson (21,000)

7- GIVE ME JUST A LITTLE MORE TIME- Kylie Minogue (20,000)

8- THE BOUNCER- Kicks Like A Mule (16,000)

9- LEAVE THEM ALL BEHIND- Ride (13,000)

10- REVERENCE- Jesus & Mary Chain (12,000)

Thanks for posting all of those! Love reading the weekly stats and seeing how close the tracks were to the position either side of it
Do you have the same T10 sales for Kylie’s earlier PWL singles?

Success was so unlucky to have three continuous at number 11!!

In fact i just watched an interview with Kylie where Dannii says if she was to perform a Kylie song it would be Shocked, and Kylie said she would do This Is It before changing her mind to All I Wanna Do!

TOTP used to have such an impact back in the early 90’s!

Edited by vibe

I like that information about which song they would each sing from each others releases, This is it was a great Kylie choice, and likewise i could see Dannii performing shocked.

Sales were definitely on a declining trend from devil onwards.

Shame looking back that they both didnt manage to go top 10 that week, at the time i wasn't into Dannii at all so i was so happy that Kylie was higher in the charts but looking at it now it would have been a bit of history to have both sisters in the top 10 at the same time.

Dannyboy - do you have top 10 positions with sales for Kylies earlier PWL singles? Would be interesting to compare.

No sorry, all this information is found in the retro section on buzzjack
All of the above sales estimates and commentary are from Gezza who also posted them on Haven forums, they go back to 1980 so I'll share the 80s Kylie info here.

I Should Be So Lucky: Week 1

Whether or not Tiffany can claim a fourth week depends almost entirely on how the record at No 2 performs this week. Since “Neighbours” became something of a phenomenon on BBC 1 last year the shows stars have undoubtedly been Scott Robinson (Jason Donovan) and Charlene Mitchell (Kylie Minogue) whose romance has been the focal point for many magazines and publicity for the show. Minogue started her acting career on various soap operas in her native country before getting some guest slots with her younger sister on “Young Talent Time”, her arrival at “Neighbours” in 1986 proved a springboard for her and a performance of “loco-motion” at a benefits concert with fellow cast members gave her a record deal and pushed the song to No 1 for 7 weeks down under, it is currently the biggest selling single of the decade there. She’s now teamed up with hot producers Stock Aitken & Waterman who have written “I Should Be So Lucky” for her and the song sees the 19 yr old power 16-2 (54,000) even outselling Tiffany on Saturday- an ominous sign for Ms Dawlish. It was turned down by every major label forcing Pete Waterman to form his own label (PWL) in order to issue the single- a vote of confidence there which looks like being rewarded.

2- I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY- Kylie Minogue (54,000)

10- SAY IT AGAIN- Jermaine Stewart (23,000)

I Should Be So Lucky: Week 2

Despite a late surge by Tiffany she loses her crown this week with “I Think We’re Alone Now” falling 1-2 (60,000), It is replaced by a song which creates chart history. Before now there has never been a hat-trick of successive No 1 singles by female solo vocalists but with the rise of “I Should Be So Lucky” by Kylie Minogue to the top today it finally happens. The song proved too strong for the opposition and becomes the 5th No 1 to be produced by Stock/Aitken/ Waterman though the songs appears to be dividing audiences between those that love and those that hate the song. Curiously, though the promo was filmed late last year it wasn’t, and hasn’t, been played on TOTP, they’ve promoting the song with a “live” version of Minogue riding around Sydney in the back of a car which was actually filmed for a Noel Edmunds Christmas special and seems to be the BBC’s preferred version. The track sold 81,000 copies this week and perhaps it is appropriate for both Neighbours and Kylie to be dominating at present as Australia celebrates its bicentennial this year.

1- I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY- Kylie Minogue (81,000)

9- VALENTINE- T’pau (27,000)

10- SHAKE YOUR LOVE- Debbie Gibson (25,000)

I Should Be So Lucky: Week 3

Nothing short of a miracle would have prevented “I Should Be So Lucky” from topping the charts this week- and that miracle never happened, it sold a new 1988 high of 119,000 copies, the highest tally since……Rick Astley last September! It seems we can’t get enough of this particular Aussie at present.

1- I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY- Kylie Minogue (119,000)

2- BEAT DIS- Bomb The Bass (62,000)

I Should Be So Lucky: Week 4

“I Should Be So Lucky” cools at retail sliding 8% to 95,000 as overall sales expand to 374,000 enough to see rank only behind Tiffany for the year thus far. Again it was untouchable by the chasers and outpaced Bomb The Bass by nearly 2: 1 with the latter selling 53,000 copies in the runner up spot as it itself similarly lost support.

1- I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY- Kylie Minogue (95,000)

2- BEAT DIS- Bomb The Bass (53,000)

10- I THINK WE’RE ALONE NOW- Tiffany (24,000)

I Should Be So Lucky: Week 5

With sales off by 27% Kylie Minogue remains the nation’s biggest seller for a fourth week but it’s really touch and go for a fifth week for the Neighbours star, regardless it is now the longest chart topper of 1988. “I Should Be So Lucky” sold 67,000 copies last week but still had a relatively easy week as she defended herself against the still improving Rick Astley whose “Together Forever” rose 4-2 (51,000) to emerge as her main challenger, that of course gives Stock Aitken & Waterman a stranglehold on the top 2 marking a new high point for the producers, they also book end the top 10 with a new track at No 10, but more on that in a moment. Astley also finally makes No 1 in the US with “Never Gonna Give You Up”, that’s the production trio’s second US chart topper after Bananarama’s “Venus” turned the trick for them last year.

1- I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY- Kylie Minogue (67,000)

2- TOGETHER FOREVER- Rick Astley (51,000)

3- BEAT DIS- Bomb The Bass (41,000)

4- JOE LA TAXI- Vanessa Paradis (35,000)

5- GET OUT OF MY DREAMS, GET INTO MY CAR- Billy Ocean (32,000)

8- SUEDEHEAD- Morrissey (27,000)

9- CRASH- The Primitives (24,000)

10- THAT’S THE WAY IT IS- Mel & Kim (23,000)

I Should Be So Lucky: Week 6

On paper not an awful lot happened last week in the top 3, Kylie hung on for a 5th week at the top (the longest chart topper by a female since Jennifer Rush in 1985) while Rick Astley held at No 2 and Vanessa Paradis crawled 4-3 but the fact beneath that is that all three tracks are now in sales decline to varying degrees. Kylie slumped 37% to post a sale of just 48,000 which is the lowest tally since KC & The Sunshine Band in 1983, Astley shed 22% to sell 39,000 (the lowest since “Crockett’s Theme last year) and Vanessa Paradis lost a more modest 8% to clock in at 32,000, all in all that makes a pretty soft top 3.

1- I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY- Kylie Minogue (48,000)

2- TOGETHER FOREVER- Rick Astley (39,000)

3- JOE LE TAXI- Vanessa Paradise (32,000)

10- GET OUT OF MY DREAMS, GET INTO MY CAR- Billy Ocean (24,000)

I Should Be So Lucky: Week 7

Kylie falls 1-3 (33,000) after 5 weeks as the nation’s favourite which brings the tracks total sales to 560,000, S/A/W are clearly hoping to have produced the best seller of the year for a second year on the trot as this track ascends to the top of the listings for 1988.

1- DON’T TURN AROUND- Aswad (52,000)

2- DROP THE BOY- Bros (42,000)

3- I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY- Kylie Minogue (33,000)

8- NEVER/ THESE DREAMS- Heart (25,000)

9- SHIP OF FOOLS- Erasure (24,000)

10- I GET WEAK- Belinda Carlisle (21,000)

I Should Be So Lucky: Week 8

Her last single disappointed at No 15 (“G.T.O”) but Sinitta is back in the top 10 with the S/A/W penned “Cross My Broken Heart”, it is cut from her debut self titled album which is home to all five of her hits and must be drawing its last breath in terms of singles culled from it. It is released in a remixed form, its LP version being over 6 minutes long, and advances 14-6 (34,000) following another lycra clad TOTP performance from her. S/A/W’s other top 10 single is the falling “I Should Be So lucky” which hurtles 3-8 (30,000)

1- DON’T TURN AROUND- Aswad (49,000)

2- DROP THE BOY- Bros (38,000)

7- HEART- Pet Shop Boys (30,000)

8- I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY- Kylie Minogue (30,000)

9- NEVER/ THESE DREAMS- Heart (28,000)

10- I’M NOT SCARED- Eighth Wonder (23,000)

I Should Be So Lucky: Week 9

Eighth Wonder inch another spot 10-9 (28,000) with the Pet Shop Boys penned “I’m Not Scared” whilst both Tiffany at No 4 (36,000) and Sinitta at No 6 (32,000) remain static. Heading the wrong way are Aswad who surrender the top slot 1-3 (39,000) but do see their new album arrive at No 10 and “Don’t Turn Around” sneaks into the same position on the YTD chart, Iron Maiden reverse 3-5 (35,000), A-ha drop as quickly as they arrive 5-8 (28,000) and Kylie Minogue drops 8-10 (27,000) but has now sold 617,000 copies in total, and as it is the end of the first quarter here’s the YTD for 1988:
