Because people have it in their heads that it’s a Xmas song. Let’s get the Keane version in every Xmas then if you wanna see it as a Xmas song

You're missing the point. It's specifically the Lily Allen version that's a Christmas-adjacent song, because of the John Lewis Christmas advert it featured on. The Keane version does not have that connection so therefore it's nothing to do with Christmas.

The original isn’t a Christmas song, but it’s not difficult to see why the Lily Allen is so associated with Christmas…

I see where he's coming from - if nobody really knows (how I don't know but some live in a cave with these things) the Keane version then they'd assume it was a Christmas song but yeah the original is just a regular song like every other song out there not Christmas related!
Brenda should be very safe for a new official peak of #3 this week but will be interesting to see if she can challenge for #1 in the next few years. I’d be up for a bit of a change at the top. I think I went off Rocking Around The Christmas Tree a long time ago because the CD we had at home had that awful Mel & Kim version on it, but Brenda’s version is great. ^_^

Actually keep forgetting about Ed and Elton haha - she’ll be #4 at least anyway and very likely Top 3 in future.

Always find the Spotify chart weird from the end of December when we go from each song being streamed millions of times daily to the no10 being on 150k by 29/12 and being some song that was huge in October. Roll on the new music for 2023!

Figures in the US are insane:

1 Brenda Lee 5,77 million

2 Jingle Bells Rock 4,5 million

3 Mariah 3,9 million

4 Andy Williams 3,8 million

5 Buble 3,6 million

Really? :D ;)

On the other hand, love how there is only 1 Xmas song in the top 10 in Spain (Mariah at 7)

and the rest is the usual Bad Bunny, Rosalia, Quevedo, Ozuma, etc

Edited by Bjork

The Christmas songs peaked yesterday in Spain (as they do in a lot of countries) - albeit was still nowhere near as dominant, only Wham! and José being top 10 along with Mariah.

Their "main day" was yesterday like in most countries. Still, there were only 3 Christmas songs in top ten.

We have no choice but to stan that Mr Brightside will now be certain to pass 1000 consecutive days in the Spotify chart in 2023!
Are they on their way out, buoyed only by Spotify playlists then, aoCC payola against Queen of Christmas!??!?!?!

Sorry to break it to you, but on Spotify, Mariah is the one in decline - typically below previous years. At one point this morning, Wham! were number 1 on Spotify, Amazon Prime and Amazon Music Unlimited. They were also number 1 last week on both Audio and Video streaming charts last week.

Spotify usually buoys US artists more than UK artists.

I don't think Mariah being almost 500k above last year shows a decline at all...! (for the record, she's actually up about 40k more than Wham! are year-on-year)
There’s a second version of Brenda Lee in the chart and combined it’s only about 5k behind Wham! I think!

Yes! Very close! In reality it wouldn’t be quite so close as there at least 2 other versions of ‘Last Christmas’ including the popular Pudding Mix. It’s difficult to work out how many streams they get each day.

Regardless - it’s fascinating to see Brenda ahead of Mariah and so close to Wham! - showing the impact of US streaming habits on Spotify in the UK. She is lower down on Apple, but could one day become UK number 1.

Interesting to see Mariah is the US number 1 despite being so far behind Brenda Lee on Spotify.

Yes

They didn't prefer that terrible Easter dirge until a few years ago when the OCC started buildinf it up in a sexist attempt to forever deny Mariah the #1!!!

Interesting thoughts - but the media and OCC portray AIWFCIY as the UK’s favourite Christmas song constantly, ignoring Last Christmas completely, and therefore are surprised each time Last Christmas performs better than AIWFCIY - despite the fact that it has done so two years in a row now.

As for sexism - have you checked the OCC website? They adore female singers, and Mariah in particular.
