'Run' is her better song for me but I didn't mind the Guetta one either. 'Oracle' is great and in mine too as you saw. 'Rainfall' however was utterly pointless and I was pleased it didn't make the top 40.

Starting off the top 100 we have the king of disco himself, German DJ Purple Disco Machine with the second of 4 appearances in the overall Hottest 200. Released as a single alongside the album 'Exotica' (which I meant to check out but never did) it also saw the return of Swedish pop singer Agnes to my chart - having previously guested on Avicii's 'Tough Love'. The song is groovy as you'd expect, and very much helped by the great vocal delivery of Agnes.

Australian dance group Rüfüs Du Sol had racked up a fair few minor hits over the years but now appear in the Hottest 100 for the first time with 'Always'. Taken as the album closer to 'Surrender', it did not get a single push from them but regardless it was an easy stand-out for me. Reminiscent of 'Innerbloom' (which deserved a fair bit better than it got in my chart) it was the longest track of the album too with a runtime of 7:28, but likewise does not waste a second of it. With its melodic house atmosphere, emotive vocal and a satisfying progression throughout the track it makes for a very lovely listen.

Spiritbox again now, having had 'Rotoscope' toward the bottom end of the Hottest 200, they appear now with 'Hysteria' which was my favourite from the EP they put out this year - though one of their singles from 2021 is yet to appear. It is rather reminiscent of when Evanescence sounded their best in the 00s, with a great vocal from front woman Courtney LaPlante making them my favourite rock group discovery in ages. I can even get behind the one minute of shouting at the end, as well, the song is titled 'Hysteria' for a reason..

Of Gareth Emery's six Hottest 200 appearances, five of these are in the top 100. Not all are taken from 'Analog' however, such as this track put out at the start of the year. Indeed it is yet another cover version of Patti Smith 'Because the Night', and rather reminiscent of Cascada's take on it too with the high tempo Clubland feel to it. Not one for the music snobs clearly, but it's a fun and faithful rendition so gets a thumbs up from me - even if I did tire of it fairly quickly.

Trance producer from America, Andrew Bayer had been on my radar from having had a BJSC appearance but hadn't quite managed a big hit. Until that is he started a new album cycle and chose to lead with 'Midnight', an eight-minute progressive trance track. The lengthy beat-less intro is a very intriguing choice but the song doesn't feel whole without it (an 'edit' version eventually got released but only got one play from me), with a great vocal section to follow before the final payoff at the 6-minute mark, a real hands in the air drop reminiscent of classic EDM bangers of the 2010s.

Following from last year's EP release, Disclosure put out just a couple of new songs for 2022. The first of these (and only in the Hottest 200) was YGTLGIYWTBF (the longest song title in the entire rundown!), a team-up with Zedd. It was the latter's first chart appearance in over half a decade as he'd long been releasing disappointing radio-pop. It certainly does have more of the feel of a Disclosure record though, which helps, and vocals are provided by Disclosure's Guy. Some of the synth choices toward the end seem to have been Zedd-inspired though and reminiscent of his better work thankfully.

Altrice is a producer from Arizona US, whose song 'Places Faces' I found by chance through the Spotify algorithm. A few listens later and I was hooked by its lo-fi beat and looped samples which I'd discover came from Tina Turner 'Private Dancer'. It is reminiscent of the old house trend but I found it to be a rather inventive sample use, and its 5 minute runtime seems to go by rather quickly.

Reminiscent of early-10s progressive trance, and perhaps the natural successor to their classic hit 'I Remember'. It deserved to peak a fair bit higher here but was made up for by good longevity, plus a John Summit remix giving it a second run.

Ever so slightly outdoing Rüfüs Du Sol this year we have a song that is rather reminiscent of them. It comes from Australian duo Abroad - originally brought to my attention through a feature for Embrz, however they weren't on my radar again before being sent to BJSC with this very song - another great melodic house track.

Lane 8 appears in the top 100 six times which is one more than any other, so by that aspect it's really been his year (he was also my most-listened to artist going by Spotify Wrapped). Anyhow, the first of these is album track 'All I Want', one of two tracks to also feature Arctic Lake. Starting out as a lovely chilled melodic house effort, it has an unexpected big drop around the 2:30 mark though it works very well for the track.

Having just missed the top 100 with Oliver Heldens, Anabel Englund is now here by herself with 'Midnight Rapture'. Having been sent to BJSC at the tail end of last year, it just beat my entry 'Fancy' to the win but as one of my absolute fave contest discoveries of recent times, I couldn't complain. The track makes an inspired sample use of Blondie 'Rapture' turning it into a sensual dance-pop banger, with Anabel also giving both great singing and spoken vocal performances.

After the big success of 'Hypnotised' it was time for Purple Disco Machine and Sophie to reunite for 'In the Dark', which indeed proved to be another big hit for them. Outpeaking 'Hypnotised' in the weekly chart, however not doing quite so well in the year-end (#60 vs #76). But as far as hyped sequels to producer-vocalist collabs go, this is a great one regardless.

British tech house DJ Chapter & Verse was one of the most prolific of the year, putting out as many as 21 tracks on Spotify. Only 4 of those made the chart here and of them, 'Everybody Everybody' is the only in the hottest 100. The track is a re-do of the Black Box hit from the early 90s, not a track I was familiar with but in this modernised version sounds banging.

Now we get to an electronic act I didn't think we'd ever hear from again. Having put out their "final album" in 2014, Röyksopp casually released their best song yet in 'Never Ever' before disappearing altogether, besides a release dump of old out-takes in 2019. But then like SHM it seemed their supposed retirement was just a lengthy hiatus and a three-part album series ended up happening. Now reuniting with Susanne Sundfør who assisted on their previous biggest-hit, 'Oh, Lover' returned them both to the top three. A fantastic synthpop record here this is anyhow, and one that holds up very well with repeat listens so expect this to end up in next year's chart too.

Despite Avicii having left a huge legacy in dance music it's quite unfortunate that these days modern dance trends seem to have moved away from his signature styles, and even in my personal chart this tends to be the case. But as it turned out I missed this track from 2019 until the Spotify algorithm belatedly recommended the artist Hogland to me. Some of his material was a bit more on the dull side of Kygo but his most popular track 'Letting Go' is a right tune so thanks Spotify algorithm. This track however sadly also gave my sole DNQ in BJSC for the year.

Another BJSC entry for me here - although like the last in hindsight it wasn't really a track worth sending given its poor performance (though this at least qualified), I thought I'd give Grandbrothers another go as I wanted to save Grum for the 150th edition and I had no other ideas. Whilst not being quite as beautiful a piece as 'What We See' (last year's EOY #01) it was a great uplift from them and perhaps the closest they've got to producing a club friendly dance track, I do like this direction for them though as it's still very piano-based and structurally interesting.

The sole entry for David Guetta this year as he didn't attach himself to great songs by other performers as he did last year. It did prove to be his biggest global hit in many years and I'd say it was much deserved. The song got a lot of disdain by online music reviewers for its very blatant sampling of the dance classic "Blue". However for me it is a great modern take on the track and worth the four-year wait from having heard its live rip to its final version. Also it was great to have something inspired by the best of early-10s EDM bangers be such a hit again. Being assisted by Bebe Rexha on vocals, it also took her back into my top five for the first time in over a half-decade.

From what i've seen in here so far, its nice to see Easy On Me, Free Yourself, Time and Hold Me Closer. Where Did You Go & Ferrari are some of my favourite of the big hits from the year, and its also cool to see the incredible Mary On A Cross in another EOY!

the Beyoncé song didn't really feel like to me it was sampling Show Me Love, I think they just credited its songwriters to avoid a potential suit. I think for Adele there was a fair bit of backlash when she cancelled her Vegas shows early in the year so they decided to wait until that had been largely forgot about and also to try and drive Xmas album sales.

yeah I'm surprised we only ever got the Ashley Wallbridge remix as an ASOT rip, the song may've been a few places higher if it came out proper. for me Heartbreak Anthem from Galantis remains better than Run but that is still stronger than vast majority of their recent material. I didn't realise All I Want was a cover version either.

Rising tech house producer Acraze broke through in a huge way with this track getting huge in DJ Land and not long after the actual charts as well. Taking a sample from a very minor 2006 hit that I don't remember and making it into an incredibly catchy dance track. It's got a huge tight bass to it which you just don't find on the commercial pop-house records which really makes such a repetitive little track work this well. This is certainly a contender for next year's top 100 if it continues to hold up well for me past the Christmas period.

Well here it is. Certainly is a track that held up well into the year. The long-awaited follow-up wasn't quite as good though and had a fairly short run.

Here's Ciaran McAuley again, taken from his debut album which I still need to listen to at some point, 'You and I' was its biggest hit on Spotify and in my chart, being the trance DJ's second to reach the top five. Its follow-ups didn't do quite so well however. The song is also assisted by Roger Shah (aka Sunlounger) on co-production and Hannah Brine on vocals, giving a rather delicate airy sounding performance which works for the song. If you enjoy vocal trance then this is a very solid track in its genre and worth a listen. The production gets a bit trancier toward the end too.

Scoring an unlikely UK chart comeback hit this year thanks to DnB in general re-surging in popularity we have Wilkinson. Although he did already have a couple of hits in the decade alongside Sub Focus in my chart. Although this is a lot cleaner-sounding than other hits in the genre which is why it appears a lot higher, with lush texture being prioritised over the need for a 'big drop'. Issey Cross delivers a very sweet vocal performance on the track too.

Now for something a little bit different as we get to Metric. They had been sent to BJSC a few times before but never made any chart impact until 'Doomscroller' this year. Having gone somewhat "viral" on this here forum I had to hear if the song was worth the hype and surprisingly it was, leading to a very impressive (for an indie band) #3 chart debut. It does help that the first half is somewhat dancey and electronic of course, but the entire 10 minutes is a real journey of a song. The track just seems to keep building in intensity throughout and the end part is very pleasingly climactic too.

And now a more ordinary sight in the EOY chart, another tech house song! This one is a remake of a minor 00s hit from Freeform Five by British DJ Joshwa, a song I wasn't actually familiar with before so it was essentially a new song for me. It followed on (in my chart) from his big club hit 'My Humps' (a remake of the BEPs hit), although this one didn't do close to the numbers that got on Spotify, I did prefer it quite a bit. Likely helped by the strong melody of the song it is remixing, though Joshwa does a great job of modernising it.

After over a decade of being a big name in trance it was finally time for Gareth Emery to team up with Armin van Buuren. Having been teased weeks in advance I was expecting this to be the most obvious #1 of the year, but it ultimately had to settle for 2nd as Worakls unexpectedly released in the same week. I also would've loved a proper trance anthem from these two but it otherwise lived up to the hype for being a high energy fist-pumping clubland anthem. And there was also the small matter of Owl City finally making another appearance in the chart for the first time in over a half-decade, he does prove to be a great fit for the song. The song was expectedly Armin's biggest of the year, whereas Gareth has one more appearance to make.

Gardenstate's best release to date but it will have to wait until next year to get a more deserving position in this rundown. Taking the best bits of the 2020 Eurovision entry and giving it the much needed enhancement in the production with a breakbeat and further strings and bass emphasis. The vocal performance from Gjon is outstanding too so I'm glad it finally got an interesting production effort to match it. The chorus here translates to "I give up..answer me" with other lyrics in the song asking further questions about the state of the world, though even sung entirely in French it is a very emotional-sounding song. I strongly recommend.

The third-highest Lane 8 song now, 'Survive' was the album-opener to 'Reviver' and was pushed as the impact single alongside the album release, ultimately becoming the most streamed track of the album on Spotify. For me it wasn't quite the strongest on the record, but sure is up there. This one is a bit more electronica than melodic house strictly speaking but has all the makings of what makes a Lane 8 song great. The vocalist here also featured on Lane 8's first "millionaire" single 'Brightest Lights' as part of Poliça.

Worakls managed three #1s in as many months this year, with '54' being the second and longest-running of these, although not the highest in this rundown. It is a beauty of an orchestral house composition, what more can I say? It is a bit more subtle than 'Storm', his big hit of last year, but the way it plays around with the short riff throughout is very well done. The song is named after his daughter Liv (when capitalised, it can be read as the number 54 in Roman numerals) and the cover art is an artist's rendition of the song's structure.

No prior hits for Lizzo in this chart, but it was about damn time she had one when this tune came out. In its original form a classy disco cut, it peaked at #75, before taking off into the top 40 after what I had hoped for inevitably happened. Purple Disco Machine's input as a remixer doesn't detract whatsoever from the original groove of the track, whilst giving it the dancey uplift it needed. It's a fun care-free bop especially in this version, but yeah this song really was made to be remixed into a disco house track.

The highest appearance for Spiritbox now! This was the song I first discovered from the band and while it made a fairly good first impression it quickly grew after a few further listens. Eventually reaching the top 10 after I decided upon it as a BJSC entry. 'Secret Garden' was taken from their 2021 debut album but through the Spotify algorithm was brought to my attention this year. Great pop-rock songs seem to be very hard to come by but this did it excellently with a great vocal performance and matching intensity from the rest of the group.

The second-highest appearance for Craig Connelly - 'You Are Alive' is a cover version of the early 00s hit for trance group Fragma. Released alongside the album 'Believe In Magic' it instantly stood out amongst the album tracks. A little through the little familiarity I had with the original sure, but it in itself has the feel of a piece of classic trance and for me is the definitive version. Tara's vocal here is excellent and Craig goes full out with the trance euphoria with the drops.

And here we have the first chronologically of Worakls' trifecta of #1 hits, which is also the highest-appearing in the rundown. This was also the track that managed to stop Armin/Gareth's collab from reaching #1. It is a triumph of an orchestral house piece, best heard in its full-length 7:40 version however I have linked to the well-made music video, which protests against French oil company TotalEnergies. It's a bit more of a dramatic sounding track like 'Storm', and something I'd likely have sent to BJSC if that hadn't been a winner.

For Ben Gold's second album 'Rest of Our Lives' he clearly knew he needed the same uncredited vocalist from 'The City Sleeps Tonight' for its title track and indeed it got him a second #1 hit following the album release. Whilst following the same formula it stands up for itself as a strong vocal trance track and was rather comfortably the best of the album, which ultimately didn't do quite enough for me to land a place in my AOTY Contenders list.

Perhaps sending a song titled 'Proud' to a Pride themed BJSC spin-off was a bit on the nose, but ultimately I ended up preferring it over a few of my main contest entries and it did perform rather well. Qrion herself is a Japanese-born electronic producer/DJ who put out an album on Anjunadeep last year, with this song standing out whilst looking for contest potentials. The song samples a Denise Williams track, although for the most part cleverly using the vocal as an effect alongside a groovy deep house beat.

Starting off the top 40 we have the first and only hit so far for Danish producer S.A.M. and former BGT contestant Sarah Ikumu with their cover version of Jennifer Hudson's 'Spotlight'. Reimagined into a groovy classic house track, helped by a vocal performance just as powerful as the original, it was a fairly hyped Defected release which gave it an instant top five debut, later peaking at #2 behind Shouse. No follow-up has been released yet so it seems unlikely that there'll be a second hit on the horizon in 2023.

The lowest of five UK chart hits in my year-end top 40, this became the first big new dance hit of the year quickly climbing into the UK top 10, as the first release from Belters Only, a collaborative project between two Irish producers. Although it didn't quite do so well in this chart it had a fairly lengthy run. The track is also a cover version of the little-known track 'At the Club', although unfortunately as it turned out they didn't give the original songwriter any royalties from it. It was a bit different for a commercial dance track which sure helped it a bit for my liking anyhow, though further efforts from them couldn't do quite so much.

It was left as an album track before getting a remix from Embrz, however it is the album version that I prefer. It sees Lane 8 go in a more deep house direction, with a pitched-down vocal from Emmit Fenn. No big drop here, it's just a vibe, but a great one.

Every so often we get a really special dance record that feels like a uniting anthem for EDM. Love Tonight, albeit first released in 2017, was that tune of the year. Assisted by the admittedly great David Guetta remix, but it is the original version that secured most my attention. With lyrics about being that crying shoulder for someone and just wanting to be loved, it was a really lovely sentiment through the second year of the pandemic with the song being a musical warm hug. The vocal ensemble was a very unique approach and the sax solo just topped it off to make it a truly excellent song. With the drop just being beat-and-bass it really gave the emotional value to the vocal. In my chart it was a giant sleeper hit and sets a new record for the biggest #5 hit in an EOY chart. Although we may never get another song from Shouse (they haven't put out anything since 2018!) or even if they do return to music off the back of this belated success the magic likely can't be recreated.

Well my final thought turned out to be wrong in the best way, but more on that later...

Norwich trance producer Oliver Smith has been associated with Anjunabeats for well over a decade, however it took until 2022 for him to finally cross over to my chart. But his first hit also managed to be great enough for my year-end top 40. 'Borderline' is a strong vocal progressive trance effort reminiscent of great 2010s EDM. We don't often get Anjuna tracks of such high quality so this was a great track to start the year off for them.

The highest entry for Gareth Emery now - 'This Is Not The End' became the first of two #1 hits for him off the 'Analog' album - the second of which came too late in the year for this year-end chart. This track is more in the style of classic Emery "trance-pop" efforts and so was an instant fave for me, spending two weeks at #1 - although eventually falling a bit too quickly to really contend for a higher year-end position. It's a very solid effort from him anyhow and definitely got me more hyped for the album.

Here's Above & Beyond now but not as you know them - 'Believer' was originally a beat-less instrumental piece for their ambient album 'Flow State', with Marsh adding a dance backing for A&B to play the track during their set for Cercle in Guatape, Colombia. It's a beauty of a melodic house track, with a minimal beat making great use of percussion alongside the original atmosphere and piano melody.

It's another good year for Nora En Pure with her appearing twice in the year-end top 40. The first of these is 'Sign of the Times' - not related to any other song of the same title but rather a great instrumental piece. A melodic house track with prominent piano and string use always seems to appeal to me so unsurprisingly it made its way to #2, only behind another piano piece yet to appear. Her later releases in 2022 weren't quite so strong but here's hoping this year brings some more of this quality.
