74 Daniel Seavey - Runaway | 5-3-…

76 NOTD & Hastings - Killing Me | 4-7-11-15-20-30-38-x

77 Ruel - LET THE GRASS GROW | 4-6-14-22-24-33-34-39-x

78 Harry Styles - Music For a Sushi Restaurant | 13-x-33-x-23-6-5-11-19-25-31-36-x

79 Tila Tsoli feat. BJ Lips - Bimbo Doll | 9-4-12-13-22-12-13-25-35-39-x

80 ROLE MODEL - life is funny | 5-13-27-40-x

Last year, ROLE MODEL's three EOY entries all places between #86 and #95. This year, his entries are more spread out, but his top entry is higher than all three of last year's. life is funny wasn't released as a single, but it became his joint-highest peaker at the time and remains my favourite track of his. Also charting immediately upon its parent album's release was Music for a Sushi Restaurant by Harry Styles, albeit as the lowest of the 13 tracks from Harry's House! It's grown a lot in my affections and peaked at #5 as a single later in the year, though it's the first of the three singles to fall.

Two former collaborators, from 2020 #1 single Therapy, fall side-by-side with separate top 5 hits. NOTD enlisted Hastings for the infectious Killing Me, giving the latter artist a breakthrough at the same time as his solo single Hurt My Feelings. The vocalist and primary artist of Therapy was Boy In Space, who provided vocals for Said the Sky's Spider this year, giving the latter artist a first top 10.

The first of Ruel's three 2022 singles as a lead artist drops at #77 in the form of the beautiful LET THE GRASS GROW, while Charlie Puth loses his third highest track with #2 hit Left and Right, which features Jung Kook of BTS, scoring his highest peaking hit since the group made #1 with Boy With Luv in 2019. Why Don't We member Daniel Seavey scored a solo hit at the end of the year with Runaway (later climbing to #2) and putting in a very strong showing considering its late release, and Cornelia Jakobs' first chart hit in the form of Eurovision hit Hold Me Closer is at #73. Cody Simpson provided vocals for DVBBS and Galantis collaboration When the Lights Go Out, which almost made the top spot at the start of the year but still ended up as Cody's biggest hit since 2015's Thotful.

And, of course, so iconic it deserves its own paragraph. My incredible BJSC entry from Tila Tsoli, Bimbo Doll sadly departs us in this section. This song will go down in history as one of the most flawless tracks ever made. Argue with the wall x

61 Harry Styles - Matilda | 3-19-29-x-20-38-x

62 Powfu & Jomie - watch me miss | 5-6-12-19-22-36-40-x-33-x

63 Jacob Sartorius - FEAR OF INTIMACY | 3-5-11-18-30-x

64 Why Don't We - Let Me Down Easy (Lie) | 31-2-5-12-14-20-30-33-38-x

65 5 Seconds of Summer - Me Myself & I | 2-20-20-23-36-x

66 Knox - Dumpster Fire | 2-11-13-16-25-30-35-x

67 Sam Ryder - SPACE MAN | 8-12-29-x-3-24-26-25-20-30-34-x

68 Harry Styles - Little Freak | 2-17-18-37-36-x

69 Denis Coleman - Narcissist | 15-3-5-12-21-27-40-x

70 Theoz - Det kommer bli bra | 1-6-9-18-x

The first #1 to drop out is, understandably, the shortest running. Its already quick drop accelerated by a huge tour effect for The Kid LAROI, Det kommer bli bra by Theoz was nonetheless a noteworthy hit in my chart this year. Being sung entirely in Swedish, it's one of a very small number of chart-toppers entirely in a foreign language (the only others are three by Ulrik Munther in Swedish, one by CNCO in Spanish and two by Teo Bok in Spanish). The track received a music video when released as part of Theoz's Paradis EP, and it shot straight to #1 off the back of that plus his breakthrough hit Som du vill, which is actually still to come.

Another victim of a busy chart week initially, albeit this time the release of Harry's House, Denis Coleman's Narcissist overcame its muted #15 debut to climb to #3 in its second week. Though it missed out on peaking a place higher (it was the second highest non-Harry song in its debut week), it still became Denis' biggest hit to date. Debuting the week before, 5 Seconds of Summer got yeeted downwards by the Harry tracks, but nevertheless achieved their biggest hit since 2019's Who Do You Love with Me Myself & I, my favourite track from the 5SOS5 era for sure. Two of the Harry Styles songs that got in its way feature in this section, too. Little Freak initially debuted above Matilda, but the latter has overtaken, mostly with tour effect boosting it (Little Freak was sadly not on the setlist). I still love both though, two gorgeously tender moments in the middle of a fantastic album.

Sam Ryder scores the highest Eurovision entry of the year with SPACE MAN at #67, giving by far the best EOY position for a UK entry, though national final tracks from Melodifestivalen haven't dried up just yet. Knox had a big breakthrough in 2022 and Dumpster Fire became his highest charting track to date, but his first hit is actually still to come. Powfu's watch me miss ends up as his second highest entry of the year, with one late surge pushing another song ahead in the final weeks! Why Don't We lose the first of their four 2022 entries, with Let Me Down Easy (Lie) losing out to Sarcastic Sounds' ohfuckimnotok (which is still to come). Finally, Jacob Sartorius returned to the top 10 for the first time in 4 years with his biggest hit, the Laroi-esque FEAR OF INTIMACY peaking at #3 late in the summer.

52 Theoz - Som du vill | 3-11-17-19-18-16-24-32-28-35-x-13-x

54 Alec Benjamin - Speakers | 3-4-11-13-15-29-32-37-x

55 Distant Matter feat. GUS - Do You Miss Me? | 1-3-6-16-14-22-24-31-36-x

56 Sarcastic Sounds - existential crisis in c major | 9-10-8-6-11-25-24-20-35-x

57 Knox - Sneakers | 4-4-7-13-15-17-20-19-25-26-32-x

58 Amber Van Day & ILIRA - See You in Tears | 2-6-7-13-21-39-x

59 Anne-Marie & Aitch - PSYCHO | 4-6-7-11-15-16-26-22-24-28-27-32-37-x

60 Michael Aldag - POLAROID | 4-3-9-11-15-…

The highest track from Michael Aldag's SOCIALIZING EP is the latest release, POLAROID. Charting for just 5 weeks before the cut-off point, POLAROID is one of the newest tracks in the top 100 so did well to make it so high up! One more track from Michael remains in. Also debuting with the release of its parent EP, existential crisis in c major was one of three simultaneous top 10 hits for Sarcastic Sounds. It's the second highest track not to peak within my top 5 this year! There are still three more Sarcastic Sounds tracks to come, too. Alec Benjamin has two further songs left in the countdown after this section, though he loses two others here. Shadow of Mine was his first chart-topper of the year, while its follow-up Speakers hit #3 in the release week of both tracks' parent album (Un)Commentary.

Controversial in the chart forum, there was no doubt over how much I loved Anne-Marie's smash hit PSYCHO. Though it's actually her second lowest peaking single in my chart since she broke through (!), I still enjoy the modern remake of Mambo No. 5 a lot (and way more than the song it's based on, oops). It gave Aitch his first ever chart hit too. Also making their chart debut was Amber Van Day, whose song See You in Tears I discovered while watching season 1 of One of Us Is Lying on Netflix earlier in 2022. It's a collaboration with ILIRA, who had only previously charted with #29 hit Royalty in 2020. Theoz also made his first chart appearance with Som du vill, a finalist from 2022's Melodifestivalen. He's returning to the contest again in 2023 so I hope he keeps the quality up!

Elsewhere, one of the most notable breakthrough artists of the year, Knox had a big top 5 hit over the summer with the catchy Sneakers. Though he's had a track peak higher than #4 since, Sneakers remains my favourite by him! Distant Matter had never made my chart before and I must admit, I still don't know much about them, but it seems he is a Canadian producer. Nevertheless, he achieved a #1 hit with fellow Canadian GUS, who finally beat his chart curse after landing three #2 hits! Finally, a second Why Don't We hit drops out, another #2 peaker, this time behind Alfie Templeman's Candyfloss (still to come). Both their #1 hits of the year still remain in.

Hi Joseph!

Great to see The Traitors as your number 1 competition show, for sure the best thing I watched on TV this year imo!

RENAISSANCE, Night Call, i used to think i could fly, Hold The Girl, Midnights and Harry’s House are my favourites from your album countdown. Great to see some love for “Everything I Didn’t Say” too, she’s so underrated in general. <3

Loving all the Harry appearances and great to see “Weapons” and “Million Dollar Baby” in your countdown. Some other favourites so far are the Rina and Tate McRae tracks, “Head on Fire”, "All These Nights", “Star Walking”, “Cate’s Brother”, "Hot In It" and “PSYCHO” :cheer:

Hi Joseph!

Its awesome to see Cornelia's Hold Me Closer, Space Man and psycho up here, same with Hot In It and Victoria's Secret. My highlight is seeing Cate's Brother on another EOY! Maisie deserves her breakthrough this year!!!

lovely stuff!

46 Boy In Space - A**hole | 1-2-8-11-17-26-23-28-31-38-x-33-x

47 Charlie Puth - Tears on My Piano | 7-6-6-15-16-17-21-7-12-17-18-…

48 GUS - Humid Summer | 22-2-5-11-20-22-29-36-x

49 Alexander 23 - If We Were a Party | 5-3-10-11-20-29-37-x

50 Isac Elliot feat. Sexmane - Makso Mitä Makso | 4-7-8-9-14-18-21-32-33-38-x

By far his biggest hit of the year, Isac Elliot scored the highest charting Finnish-language track in my chart's history with Makso Mitä Makso ("Pay What You Pay" according to Google Translate, apologies if that's wrong to any Finnish speakers x). It had great longevity too, sticking in the top 10 for 4 weeks and solidifying itself as Isac's biggest since Waving at Cars from the beginning of 2021. At the other end of the section is another artist getting their biggest hit in a while. The Vamps scored thirteen #1s on the trot from 2013 to 2017 but since that streak ended, they've not been back to the top once. Their heartwarming festive track Seat at the Table returned them to the top for the first time in 5 years, also giving them their highest EOY placement in that time too.

Released the same week, Shawn Mendes and Tom Odell both ran into brand new Harry Styles music when they released their tracks the same week as As It Was (albeit on the Thursday and Wednesday before respectively). Nevertheless, both tracks end up as their artists' respective highest positions this week, with When You're Gone being Shawn's only entry this year and Best Day of My Life being the highest of five for Tom. Also scoring their highest placement of 2022 in this section is Alexander 23, who scored a top 3 hit with the infectious If We Were a Party, by far his biggest hit to date. GUS also makes his last appearance of the year with his third #2 hit Humid Summer (following 2020's Dancing Alone and 2021's Lies).

Adding two more #1s to his tally in 2022, taking it up to a total of 10, was Boy In Space. The first of those two chart-toppers was A**hole, and it's the first of the three 2022 singles from his BACKYARD EP to drop. His other #1 hit, Slide, is still to come, as is #2 hit Lean On which came between them. The last two artists to mention have one song each left in, both chart toppers, but their tracks departing in this section both got unlucky and peaked at #2. In fact, it was Alyssa Reid who blocked Kate Nash's Imperfect from debuting at the top! Alyssa's track is still to come so it was the right result, but shoutout to Kate's feelgood anthem nonetheless because it's one of her best tracks of recent years. Alyssa's own Lie also features here. One of the earliest songs of the year, it's the highest song from the ASHS era in this year's countdown.

40 Lancelot - Lyckligt slut | 2-4-7-15-14-25-30-x

First making my chart in late 2020 with Linton Calmroth under the duo name Lance & Linton, Lancelot Hedman-Graaf scored his biggest solo hit so far in 2022. As a duo, he achieved three top 5 hits including a #1 on Death of Me, while #5 hit I'm Alive reached an impressive #25 in last year's EOY. Lancelot began his solo career at the end of 2021 and scored two top 10 hits, but in the new year, it was all eyes on his Melodifestivalen entry. Lyckligt slut ("Happy Ending", nothing rude x) is a gorgeous downtempo track and it peaked at #2, blocked from the top by Benson Boone's ROOM FOR 2 (still to come). Nevertheless, despite the song failing to qualify beyond the heat in Melfest, Lyckligt slut finishes at a very respectable #40 in this year's countdown. And it's not this year's highest Melfest track...

39 Klara Hammarström - Run to the Hills | 3-1-3-5-12-17-26-x

It's becoming something of a tradition for one Melfest entry per year to hit my top spot. Every year from 2016 onwards, with the exception of 2018, has birthed a Melfest chart topper, but all of them have been male artists (Frans, FO&O, Oscar Enestad, FELIX SANDMAN and Anton Hagman respectively). Looking to prior years, Ulrik Munther (2013) and of course, Loreen's 2012 megasmash Euphoria also made #1 from the Swedish song contest. This makes Klara Hammarström the first female artist from Melfest in 10 years to reach the top spot! Run to the Hills debuted at #3 when it was released, immediately following the fourth and final heat, and climbed to #1 in its second week. It was a big comeback from her 2021 entry, Beat of Broken Hearts, which only peaked at #37, though her 2020 entry Nobody hit my top 10 at #10. Though the song didn't win (and, like most Melfest tracks post-contest, had a short shelf life after the competition), it still holds up as a huge tune, and finishes in my EOY as the highest Eurovision-related track of 2022 (and Melodifestivalen triumphs Eurovision for a seventh year running, though for 2016 and 2018, the highest track was the Melfest winner and therefore Sweden's Eurovision entry).

38 Rina Sawayama - Catch Me in the Air | 5-1-3-15-17-29-38-x

Rina Sawayama has been on my radar for a few years, mostly as a support act for a couple of artists I've seen live (Years & Years and Charli XCX). I enjoyed her debut album SAWAYAMA but didn't rate it quite as highly as many, though she achieved a #1 in late 2020 when she dropped LUCID from its re-issue. 2022 was the year Rina really broke through, though. Not only did LUCID re-enter for another stint in my top 20 off the back of Heartstopper, she scored two more #1s (in fact, all three of her top 10s are #1 hits!). Catch Me in the Air is the first of her 2022 #1s to appear. Its wistful, magical energy connected with me from the start, and its soaring chorus is just incredible. I think I'd ascend if I heard this live, I must go to Rina's next tour!

37 glaive - poison | 1-4-7-10-15-24-31-31-32-x-31-x

One of the earliest #1s of the year came from possibly my most notable discovery of the year. After The Kid LAROI performed on stage with him, I figured I had to check him out! From the start, poison was the song that clicked the most with me from his old dog, new tricks project. It's the most poppy track on the project which is probably no shock to anyone who knows my taste, but I think it's where his voice really shines and I love the melody of the chorus. It became his first #1 of three achieved in 2022, with the more recent two still to feature in my EOY. poison unfortunately was the only track of the 13 on the project that he didn't perform on tour...! Nevertheless, it still re-entered that week at #31, so my enjoyment of the track still shines brightly.

36 Powfu - Mine | 17-26-27-16-2-2-4-…

Undoubtedly one of the most prolific artists of the last few years, Powfu added another 8 tracks to his EOY tally in 2022. At the top end, he doesn't add a fourth EOY top 10, though. That's not to downplay Mine's success, though. His highest charting song of the year, Mine is actually a cover of the Taylor Swift track, reimagined in a pop-punk version. I always liked this version but Taylor's original is a big favourite of mine, so it had a lukewarm debut, but it grew massively on me and soared to a peak of #2 when its parent album came out. It retains the catchiness of the original with its huge chorus, but the new production reimagines the track in a way I'd never have expected, but totally love.

35 Ruel - SOMEONE ELSE'S PROBLEM | 24-2-2-3-7-10-14-18-21-…

With YOU AGAINST YOURSELF still riding high in my charts, I was curious to see whether Ruel could keep up his insane momentum with the second single from his long-awaited debut album. He's got a consistently strong track record in my chart, but YOU AGAINST YOURSELF was big on a level unlike other Ruel tracks, so I was intrigued by what was coming next! Enter SOMEONE ELSE'S PROBLEM, a track Ruel played on his free pop-up shows over the autumn. I really enjoyed the track live, and it didn't disappoint in studio version, either. It feels like a natural progression of the sound Ruel's been developing over the years, but with a big chorus that's easy to sing along to. It peaked at #2 in my chart, unluckily running into Benson Boone's Before You (still to come, so a justified loss...!), giving Ruel back-to-back top 2 hits in my chart for the first time in his career.

34 Charli XCX feat. Rina Sawayama - Beg for You | 1-4-12-14-18-22-26-25-33-38-x

Confession time: 2022 was actually the first time I'd heard Cry for You by September. I wasn't paying chart music that much attention when it came out and somehow avoided it for years, so when I heard Charli XCX's Beg for You, I took no notice of the sample at all! Perhaps that helped, I'm not sure, but Beg for You sounded big to me from the very first play. Charli sounds brilliant and it's effortlessly catchy, and it gave Charli her first #1 as a lead artist in my chart since 2015's Doing It! It kickstarted a big year for Charli, with parent album CRASH making #1 in my album chart and three further top 10s following, while also giving Rina Sawayama her first chart-topper of the year (though I wish Rina featured a little more heavily on Beg for You!).

33 Boy In Space - Lean On | 19-2-6-12-13-9-12-16-18-22-28-37-x

It's interesting that, initially, I was a little underwhelmed by Lean On. Relative to other Boy In Space songs, that is. An artist with 9 #1s under his belt at the time (with a 10th scored later), I was hoping for Lean On to hit the ground running and be a competitor in its first full week, but it took a few days to really kick into action for me. It didn't stand a chance of the #1 anyway - Ruel's megahit YOU AGAINST YOURSELF was its competition - but Lean On was a very comfortable #2 by the end of the week and had solid longevity for me too. Its hook is subdued and chilled, blending together expertly with the production for the perfect late night driving kinda vibe. Now, I love the track, and it's finished above its preceding single A**hole as well! Proof of yet more versatility in Boy In Space's incredible discography.

Nice to see When the Lights Go Down here, definitely a decent song! Matilda was a good song from the Harry album as well, quite different from the others I had heard.
Catch Me In The Air has such a lovely nostalgic feel to it, it was a real grower for me  and of course Beg For You is a banger, I agree Rina deserves a bit more of a chance to shine! But if it means she's got a top 40 UK hit to her name, I'm all for it x

32 Elton John & Britney Spears - Hold Me Closer | 2-3-5-10-11-12-15-20-26-34-31-32-36-35-38-x

Slowly but surely, I'm being converted to an Elton John fan. I never had anything against his music, but through these remixes and new takes on classic tracks, I'm discovering the joy of many of his songs. Cold Heart was one of the best surprises of 2021, while Elton repeated a similar tactic in 2022. This time, it came with the added joy of brand new Britney Spears. I've always adored Britney, and having her join Elton in a rework of Tiny Dancer intrigued me, as it's one of the most recognisable Elton tracks. I loved the new production of Hold Me Closer, and Britney sounds fantastic. It was amazing to see her riding high in the charts once again! Hold Me Closer peaked at #2 in my chart, only blocked from #1 by David Guetta & Bebe Rexha's I'm Good (Blue), which came out that same week.

31 Kate Nash - Wasteman | 1-5-8-14-17-25-30-34-x

Kate Nash has been a fixture of my EOYs since 2013, and a fixture of my life for even longer. Her debut album Made of Bricks is my favourite album of all time, and I've been such a big fan ever since. Kate's music can't be boxed in, and that's what I love about her, but honest lyrics are her trademark no matter what genre she works with. This time, she takes her lyricism to a pop banger in the form of Wasteman, a song that builds into a Clean Bandit-esque dance track unlike anything she's made before. It's made even more special by the music video, starring Danny Dyer! The track became Kate's second #1 in my chart, following 2018 album track Karaoke Kiss, though of course she'd have had numerous #1s before my chart began.

30 Jutes - Hollywood Hillbilly | 1-2-7-10-15-19-24-25-28-36-x

One of the most prolific artists of 2021, Jutes had a much quieter 2022, but that wasn't to say he didn't make an impact. After finishing 2021 with his first #1, the catchy Shania Twain, Jutes scored his second with Hollywood Hillbilly over the summer. It marked the start of him doubling down on the punk-pop sound he'd experimented with before on songs like Painkiller, and was the first single from his Hot Trash EP. After a double single release, Fumes and Limbo, both failed to chart, Hollywood Hillbilly was a big return to form for Jutes and it debuted at #1, his second chart-topper and dethroning his friend Miles Wesley, who features in the video for this track. It's by far Jutes' highest EOY placement this year!

29 Taylor Swift - Anti-Hero | 1-3-4-5-13-18-24-26-33-…

One of three shared #1s in 2022 between my chart and the UK singles chart, Taylor Swift's Anti-Hero was something of a surprise #1 for me. That feels strange to say for someone who's been one of the biggest stars of my chart for a decade now, but Taylor's previous visit to the top spot was 2019's ME! three eras beforehand. folklore and evermore somewhat went over my head, but Midnights was a return to form, and Anti-Hero exemplified that. It debuted at the top and was still in my chart by the cut-off point, becoming Taylor's biggest hit in my EOY chart since 2014's Shake It Off! Seeing it dominate global charts was so exciting, too. Finally, the world caught on to Taylor as much as I have for many years.

86 Tiësto & Charli XCX - Hot In It | 4-11-32-29-38-x

34 Charli XCX feat. Rina Sawayama - Beg for You | 1-4-12-14-18-22-26-25-33-38-x

Big bop alert! I am loving how Tiësto has managed to be a very consistent hitmaker recently, and this is certainly a fun song. Suppose I ought to check out the Charli album too at some point. 'Beg for You' is rather decent although I did enjoy the original 'Cry For You' a fair bit more (and ideally from her "Crash" singles, 'Good Ones' should've been the bigger chart hit).

73 Cornelia Jakobs - Hold Me Closer | 27-20-7-9-17-29-x-5-26-x

67 Sam Ryder - SPACE MAN | 8-12-29-x-3-24-26-25-20-30-34-x

'Hold Me Closer' was easily my favourite song at Eurovision (with Sam Ryder's outstanding performance almost topping that, so yay at the two appearing close together here), and I don't watch the National finals so was more than relieved that it lived up to what seemed like a fair bit of Buzzjack overhype.

32 Elton John & Britney Spears - Hold Me Closer | 2-3-5-10-11-12-15-20-26-34-31-32-36-35-38-x

I've been converted to somewhat of an Elton fan too - he's clearly done a great job of cementing his legacy. Although for me it started more with getting a book of his piano sheet music for Christmas a good few years ago so not quite typical of me there. Hold Me Closer was another great rework anyhow and Britney fit the track better than I'd expected.

29 Taylor Swift - Anti-Hero | 1-3-4-5-13-18-24-26-33-…

A surprise #1 for you, a surprise top 40 hit for me! Well she hadn't reached my top 40 since her Christmas song so this was an excellent comeback single for her and could very well be in contention for my overall fave of hers in time (currently that title belongs to I Knew You Were Trouble).
