28 The Lunar Year - Boys Will Cry | 2-2-5-10-16-27-33-38-x

Though 2017 was the last time The Vamps made my EOY top 40, missing out by a whisker this year, band member Connor Ball makes a return on his own terms. Connor launched his side project The Lunar Year in 2021 with drummer Sasa Macek, and they released debut single Back for More that year. The Lunar Year's music leans more towards Connor's own influences such as blink-182, and they released their best song to date in 2022. The third single from their self-titled EP came out to coincide with a Dancing On Ice routine that Connor performed to promote discussion of mental health in men, and he skated to his own song, Boys Will Cry, which was released afterwards. It debuted at #2 in my chart, holding the spot for 2 weeks, behind Michael Aldag's Teenage Drama both times. It's by far the biggest Lunar Year hit to date, and it's a track that still strikes a chord with me, its soaring chorus mixed with relatable lyrics makes for a killer track.

27 Sophie Ellis-Bextor & Wuh Oh - Hypnotized | 2-12-4-11-12-18-24-35-36-x

Amazingly, Sophie Ellis-Bextor has only had one song appear in my EOYs before now. 2016's Come With Us didn't even make my weekly top 20, so it overperformed in my EOY, but Sophie's classic tracks pre-date my chart. I actually ignored this song on its release day, not intentionally, but it didn't catch my eye as a must-hear new release. How wrong I was! After recommendations and reading such good reviews, I had to check it out, and it was love at first listen. Hypnotized is one of Sophie's most ridiculous tracks to date, and is all the better for it. From the infectious production to the catchy chorus, and her outlandish pronunciation of the title, it was a surefire smash in my chart, debuting at #2 only behind glaive's minnesota is a place that exists and becoming Sophie's first top 10 hit (plus the first ever hit for Scottish producer Wuh Oh). It has a bit of a weird run, knocked out of the top 10 a week later by The Kid LAROI's tour effect, but it came back the week after to prove its real staying power. I hope this is the start of a new album campaign for Sophie as it's her best song in years for me! It finishes as this year's highest placed #2 track, though intriguingly, it's only the third highest song not to make #1.

26 Why Don't We - Just Friends | 1-14-6-6-14-17-24-27-34-x

This song is a record-breaker in more than one way - one good, and one not-so-good! On release week, Just Friends debuted at #1. Entirely expected for a Why Don't We single, so much so that it became their record-breaking 15th #1 single. After overtaking their fellow boyband The Vamps at the start of the year to draw level with Rita Ora's record of 14 #1s, the bouncy pop track Just Friends took the record entirely for Why Don't We, and they still hold the record now! However, barring the natural decline of Mariah Carey in January, Just Friends also broke the record of biggest fall from #1, becoming the first non-festive track to drop outside the top 10. This wasn't a normal week, though. 13 Harry Styles songs occupied the slots above in the release week of Harry's House, so it was more a case of bad timing for Why Don't We than anything to do with Just Friends itself, which rebounded into my top 10 the following week and has performed strongly in my EOY!

25 Sarcastic Sounds feat. Rxseboy - Disappointment | 1-4-4-8-13-15-18-22-35-40-40-x

A hook so catchy that its mere teaser became lodged in my head, Sarcastic Sounds kicked off 2022 with a huge anthem. An anthem for the underwhelming and disappointing people. Hey, no judgements here. Following three top 5 hits in a row, including a #1 in say goodbye, Sarcastic Sounds returned to the top spot with Disappointment upon its release, later becoming one of three simultaneous top tier hits for the producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist when its parent EP, named after this song (I'm a Disappointment) first dropped. It's also a significant track for uniting Sarcastic Sounds and Rxseboy without Powfu, with whom they had both exclusively charted with for a significant period of time. In fact, this was Rxseboy's first chart venture without Powfu (and he had a second top 10 without him not long after). Sarcastic Sounds still has two more songs in the running.

24 Benson Boone - Better Alone | 1-2-3-5-9-12-18-22-29-24-24-31-397-x

The first of four Benson Boone singles in 2022 drops out at a very respectable #24. By the time this came out, I was pretty certain Benson Boone was here to stay. I'd seen him live at his first ever UK show in London, and he performed his entire EP. Not a bad song to be heard! Better Alone was the first song he performed and he confirmed it as the new single there and then, so its release was very anticipated by me. Of course, like all Benson singles so far, it debuted at #1, though its respectable run of 13 weeks top 40 is actually his lowest so far by far (excluding current single Before You which has only been out 9 weeks so far, but has spent all of them in my top 20). With three songs still in the running, could it be Benson's for the taking in 2022?

23 Sarcastic Sounds - might be this | 1-2-4-9-13-…

Another Sarcastic Sounds song drops, and this time it's his latest single. might be this went to #1 upon its release in November, and marked a shift for the Canadian musician. might be this felt like an obvious #1 that week, dethroning a long runner from Benson Boone and beating new releases from The Vamps and Michael Aldag. This time, he wasn't the underdog, and the #1 peak felt like a near-certainty. It was helped by a tease on TikTok of course, with it being billed as his first ever love song! might be this continued the guitar-pop sound Sarcastic Sounds dipped into in his I'm a Disappointment EP and keeps his vocals front and centre. I'm really excited to hear what's coming next, I hope there's an album on the horizon for 2023!

22 Alec Benjamin - Paper Crown | 1-1-2-...

The newest song in my top 40 isn't actually all that new. Paper Crown was initially released in 2014 as Alec Benjamin's debut single. With a label change, the song came off digital platforms and has remained off for several years now. Despite Alec performing it at his tours, it's remained unavailable, until he started teasing a wider release in 2022. A new mix of Paper Crown came out at the end of 2022, featuring updated vocals and production, but preserving the magic of the original track. Paper Crown was a song I discovered a couple of years after release, when Alec released End of the Summer, so it never made my chart. The new mix changed that, and it entered at #1, becoming Alec's first song to spend more than a single week at the top. There's still one more Alec song left in the running, too!

21 Alyssa Reid - roses | 1-4-6-10-17-21-27-27-32-x

Achieving her most prolific year for chart hits to date, roses finishes as the highest of nine Alyssa Reid tracks in my EOY for 2022. Many of the songs came out before 2022, as part of her ASHS project and bundled together under Alyssa's own name at the end of 2021 on an album, but roses came later. Alyssa's first single release of 2022 saw her deliver a bop Ava Max would be desperate to release, and it landed her a sixth chart-topper, over two years after her last. I entered the song to BJSC and it gave me my best result of the year, finishing 8th! It's also Alyssa's best EOY position since 2013, where she achieved simultaneous top 10 hits with Satisfaction Guaranteed and Running Guns. In fact, in the interim, she only made the top 100 once (with #1 hit A Million Voices in 2019). I'm hoping an album will soon be following, I'd love to hear more songs just like this one!

20 Miles Wesley - Luck | 19-1-2-3-8-11-17-20-26-29-29-38-x

What a way Miles Wesley has come! After auditioning for short-lived reality series Boy Band in 2017 and getting cut early into the live shows, Miles has remained focused on his dream to be a singer. Since the show ended, Miles has achieved a bigger streaming hit than any song released by Boy Band winners In Real Life (Lil Mama has 21.6m streams, In Real Life's biggest has 8.7m). After a run of hits from his Here Goes Nothing Demos! project in 2020-21, Miles returned to #1 for the first time in 5 years with Luck, the first single from what is hopefully his next album. Luck is a catchy pop track with plenty of charisma, and proves just why Miles was always the star of the show for me. It's by far his best performing song in my EOYs to date, outdoing last year's #55 position for Golden very significantly!

19 Jonas Blue & Why Don't We - Don’t Wake Me Up | 1-1-4-3-8-16-19-22-23-28-34-x

Jonas Blue's chart history for me is very patchy. With five top 10s under his belt going into 2022, only two were achieved consecutively (#4 hit Ritual and #3 hit Younger), though it was 2018's Rise which remained his biggest track. Though Rise remains his biggest track in my EOY a year later, Don't Wake Me Up gives it a run for its money nonetheless. Of course, my hype was high for Don't Wake Me Up from the moment it was announced, and that was pretty much exclusively down to the featured vocalists: Why Don't We. Unsurprisingly, Don't Wake Me Up became the first big hit of 2022 in my chart and debuted at #1, tying Why Don't We with Rita Ora for most #1s. It's their highest track in the countdown this year, seeing them into my EOY top 20 for a fourth year out of the five they've featured in. It also gave the boys their first (and so far, only) charting song in the UK!

18 Dean Lewis - How Do I Say Goodbye | 37-23-40-36-25-19-1-4-12-8-8-16-21-28-29-32-…

2022 isn't a year I'll look back on particularly favourably in terms of my personal life. Coming into the year, I knew my grandad had cancer and it was terminal. He had refused further treatment, wanting to have a better quality of life at the end, even if it meant a bit less time. For ages, I didn't think about it too much. It was something for later. A day in the future. Until my grandad's health quickly went downhill. He went into hospital, only until they could get him a hospital bed (he'd spent weeks if not months sleeping on the sofa to save him going upstairs). The next day, he passed away in hospital. I got a phone call while at work to tell me the news, and I was devastated. I'd never lost anyone close to me before. Not like my grandad was, anyway. He was the man who encouraged me in all of my hobbies, being the person who listened to me without distraction or disinterest. I miss him so much, but this song has become such a powerful track for me and my family. My mum relates to it a lot, seeing as it's about losing a parent. Thankfully, Dean's father recovered from his cancer story, so there's a happier story to the song after all. It went to #1 a few weeks before I lost my grandad when I heard the song live, on a day that was already quite emotional for me (I could see the tension and emotion growing in my mum), and rebounded to the top tier after the sad news. It's my mum's comfort track now, and while I find it hard to listen to sometimes, it means so much to me. It's by far Dean's biggest hit so far in my chart, as evidenced by a (shamefully) barren EOY history below, but what a song to make it with. Grandad's big mate will cherish this song forever

17 glaive - three wheels and it still drives! | 1-1-3-4-8-17-19-19-18-22-25-28-30-…

This song evokes almost the opposite reaction in me to the song above...! The second single from glaive's forthcoming debut album, three wheels and it still drives! is the most batshit song in my top 20. It's a song of two halves, quite literally. The first half is an acoustic track detailing leaving a partner. It's cute and tender, quite unlike any glaive song, and I was surprised by how calm it was when I first heard it. Then the second half comes in. The tempo rapidly picks up out of nowhere, the vocals get louder, and it's much more glaive-like as the anger kicks in, the abusive phone calls and the reminiscing on a toxic relationship. My reaction when I first heard it must have been priceless...! It debuted at #1 in my chart on just half a week of availability, becoming glaive's third and most recent chart-topper. As for the title, which isn't mentioned anywhere in the lyrics, it ties in with the music video, where glaive's character leaves in a car with a tyre punctured by his now-ex!

16 Alfie Templeman - Candyfloss | 1-1-3-7-16-18-22-38-34-36-x

I've been following Alfie Templeman for a few years now, tracing back to top 20 hit Stop Thinking (About Me) over summer 2019. Alfie scored a top 10 hit in each of 2020 and 2021, and both achieved near-identical EOY placings too (Obvious Guy and Shady), but he hadn't really achieved any consistent level of success. However, Alfie's debut studio album Mellow Moon surpassed all my expectations, and the shining star was this track. The 80s vibes were strong on indie-pop bop Candyfloss, undoubtedly the shining star of the album. I met Alfie and heard him perform the song live on the week it came out, all coming together for the track to debut at #1 before it was even a single. Its single push came later in the year, though despite previous strong Radio 1 support for the era, they didn't playlist this one. Nevertheless, it was a top 15 hit in BJSC for me and achieved my highest points tally of the year!

15 Charlie Puth - Light Switch | 9-1-2-5-13-13-13-17-23-28-30-31-x-34-x

I spoke of Charlie Puth's comeback earlier in the thread but this is the track that really kickstarted it. Its creation documented on TikTok from a series of simple ideas, Light Switch is a mark of pop genius and proves Charlie's credentials as an artist, songwriter and producer. It's effortlessly catchy, the light switch sound is fun and he sounds brilliant on it, plus the video is a hoot. It became Charlie's first #1 in my chart since How Long in late 2017, and was also his first UK top 40 hit in the same period of time. I loved seeing it resonate with the pubic as well as myself! It kickstarted a big year for Charlie in my chart, where he achieved a total of 8 top 10 hits from his #1 album CHARLIE, and I saw him live twice at the end of the year to top it all off.

14 Boy In Space - Slide | 1-2-4-6-11-15-24-21-23-26-23-20-23-25-…

It's not quite three years in a row in the top 10 (only Iggy Azalea has ever managed that before in 2013-15), but Boy In Space manages a fourth year in a row in the top 20 with Slide, the fourth single from his BACKYARD EP. Following Let You Go in late 2021 before A**hole and Lean On in the run up to the EP's release, Slide came out alongside the EP with its video premiering the same day. The track features the best chorus on the EP, with great production and Boy In Space's uniquely blissful vocals at the forefront. The video stars Boy In Space as a school janitor and it fits the song like a glove, and it became his second chart-topper of the year (and tenth overall) upon release, still being in my top 30 by the cut-off point (and even now a couple more weeks down the line). It's comfortably his biggest hit of what's been another huge year for Boy In Space!

13 glaive - minnesota is a place that exists | 3-2-1-4-5-12-15-21-23-23-26-28-35-34-30-39-x

I was very interested to hear the first new single from Ash Gutierrez, better known as glaive, since I discovered him at the start of the year. It wasn't too long a wait, either, with the ridiculously titled minnesota is a place that exists arriving at the end of June. The track is about a partner of glaive's and the anger he feels when thinking about her, saying he "might just f**king kill" her and "tell [her] family that [she] went to f**king Minnesota". It walked so SZA's Kill Bill could run :kink: seriously though, the production is the best of any glaive song I've heard, and the instrumental section after the chorus feels so brilliantly joyous, contrasting completely with the mood of the lyrics. It debuted at #3 behind Distant Matter's Do You Miss Me? and Charlie Puth's Left and Right, jumping ahead of both a week later but Rina Sawayama's Catch Me in the Air leapfrogged them all. It hit the top spot in its third week, keeping Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Hypnotized at bay barely. I heard the song live at glaive's tour, where he performed it again as an encore (he didn't have one planned but heard the crowd's chants...!), then two more times when glaive supported The Kid LAROI at both his London shows, making it the song I heard live most in 2022...!!

12 Alec Benjamin - Devil Doesn’t Bargain | 7-12-18-24-24-x-32-4-10-10-14-28-15-3-4-7-11-13-21-24-31-32-39-x

With ten #1 singles now under his belt, it's quite unlucky that Devil Doesn't Bargain isn't actually one of them when it's his third highest EOY position ever! Released as an album track on the (Un)Commentary album, Devil Doesn't Bargain was an instant highlight. Its production is a lot more lively and vivacious than a typical Alec song, with a fantastic chorus and, as you'd expect on an Alec song, top notch lyricism (bonus points for being the first song I've ever noticed to use the word "hubris"). It debuted in my top 10 as an album track, before returning to a new peak of #4 when its single push began, rebounding back up to #3 (behind Miles Wesley's Luck and Benson Boone's Better Alone, both of which are actually lower in this EOY) after I saw Alec on tour and heard the song live - it popped off just as I expected it to! Devil Doesn't Bargain miraculously became Alec's third UK top 100 hit, sneaking in at #95. It deserved much better, but I'm glad it's joined Alec's small group of chart hits at the very least, as it's definitely cemented itself as one of his best songs. There's still one more song that didn't peak at #1 to come...!

11 Harry Styles - Late Night Talking | 1-2-4-5-5-12-16-19-23-18-23-23-28-27-28-25-25-34-35-35-x

Not quite grabbing two songs in the top 10, Harry Styles nonetheless achieves one of his best EOY placings with the second Harry's House single. Late Night Talking was debuted at Harry's Coachella set, but I held off listening to it to keep my anticipation high for the album! Nonetheless, I saw the reviews saying it sounded like a hit so I was excited. It impressed me on my first play upon release, and I knew it just had to be the second single, so I'm glad that's exactly what happened. The chorus, reminiscent of Keep This Fire Burning (which I know best as a Beverley Knight track, which I love!), is so infectious. I heard the track live soon after release at the Summertime Ball and then again at Harry's two Wembley shows last year, and it never got old for me. I'm glad it was such a big chart hit! Of course, it debuted at #1 in the week of the album's release, and held strong in my top 40 for an impressive 20 consecutive weeks. Harry of course has one more song left in the running, can he get a second EOY #1?

Good question! Crazily, the last time was 2014 when Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX topped it with Fancy! The only other occurrence was in my first EOY in 2012, when Girls Aloud finished first with Something New! Madly, there weren't even any lead females in my 2021 EOY top 10 :o
