10 Benson Boone - ROOM FOR 2 | 1-2-5-9-10-18-15-21-28-29-30-33-27-38-x-10-22-33-x-13-26-x

Rewind to a year ago and I was counting down my 2021 EOY. GHOST TOWN by Benson Boone was still relatively new when I unveiled it as the fifth biggest song of the year, and it was an even more remarkable achievement with it being his debut single. I'm not sure whether I expected him to feature in my EOY top 10 again or not, but it's not that common an achievement. Only 8 artists have featured in two or more consecutive EOY top 10s (Alyssa Reid, Iggy Azalea, Dua Lipa, Alec Benjamin, froy, The Kid LAROI, Powfu and Boy In Space), and 11 more have featured in two or more non-consecutive top 10s (Cheryl, One Direction, Justin Bieber, The Vamps, Shawn Mendes, Ariana Grande, Charli XCX, Troye Sivan, Harry Styles, Greyson Chance and Ulrik Munther). That's a total of 19 artists in the elite club of multiple years in my top 10, it's not many in the grand scheme of things.

ROOM FOR 2 kickstarted what turned out to be a year that surpassed even the most optimistic expectations I had for Benson's music in 2022. Most importantly, it proved instantly that he isn't a one-trick pony. ROOM FOR 2 is a upbeat track about being in love, and the production is the best of any Benson track to date. It debuted at #1 in my chart and became his second #1 debut on the trot (the first artist to manage that with their first two singles in my chart's history), and even returned to the top tier after I saw Benson live and met him after, where he performed ROOM FOR 2 as the final song of the encore. Of course, Benson still has two more songs to come in this year's countdown - can one of them go all the way?

9 Michael Aldag - Teenage Drama | 3-3-5-3-1-1-3-7-14-17-18-23-30-26-37-x-24-13-x

I first discovered Michael Aldag in early 2020, just before the days of lockdown consumed our lives. I quite liked his debut single Entitled but didn't end up charting it, and he kinda fell off my radar beyond seeing the occasional post on his social media. I liked his unique voice and the fact his Liverpudlian accent shines through, and his lyricism was one of a kind. It was honest, no holds barred and straight to the point. Entitled was a little rough around the edges, but looking back, the foundations of what I've since grown to love were there from the start. It wasn't until mid-2021 that I gravitated back to Michael's music, listening to Tonsillitis, a minor hit in my chart at the time, and another minor hit followed at the very beginning of 2022 with LOML.

With a couple of hits under his belt, I listened to Teenage Drama with open ears upon its release. It came out in a busy week, against Alyssa Reid's roses and Kate Nash's Imperfect, both of which finished ahead of it, but I couldn't deny the immediate impact Teenage Drama made on me. It had big production and a gigantic chorus, and was a far more polished song than anything he'd put out before. The song held up better than both songs that debuted above, and in its fifth week, it finally climbed to #1, holding the top for two weeks and becoming Michael's first chart-topper. I also sent it to BJSC, but the heathens there disrespected it x Nevertheless, Teenage Drama still sounds so good to my ears, and it undoubtedly paved the way for Michael's excellent SOCIALIZING EP, which has been riding high in my album chart since its release.

8 Benson Boone - Before You | 1-1-1-3-5-10-10-12-…

Record labels these days seem to think that fans need a constant supply of new music from upcoming artists, even if each individual song isn't taking off. There's no complaints from me when it means we get new music on such a regular basis, and I was certainly craving it from Benson Boone. His debut EP was released at the end of of July and dominated my chart, with its entire tracklist in my top 20 that week and all four of its singles peaking at #1. Not sure his debut project could've had a better reception from me, as proven by his EOY dominance, and I think it could easily have spawned at least one more single if the label were daring enough to promote it longer.

Before You arrived just three months later, having been teased on Instagram and TikTok already. Benson nicknamed it the "wedding song" with its romantic, passionate lyrics. He's not wrong, it'd be perfect for a first dance, it's heart-warmingly cute and also contains one of Benson's best vocals yet. The final minute or so when it's building to the end is my favourite part! Before You, like its preceding four singles, debuted at #1 in my chart, and matched Benson's best run at the top (achieved by GHOST TOWN more-or-less exactly a year before), staying there for three weeks and already inching its way into my EOY top 10. It's hard for a track released so late in the year to make an impression this good, but Before You made it look easy.

7 Sarcastic Sounds - ohfuckimnotok | 1-2-6-4-9-19-4-3-7-14-21-23-27-x-37-33-36-39-39-x

There was once a time where Sarcastic Sounds seemed to just be a random name attached to a few Powfu singles. I knew he was a Canadian producer but hadn't actually ventured into his own material away from his long-time collaborator and friend. That changed in mid-2021 when the folk-pop track say goodbye caught my eye. Far deeper lyrically than its light and airy production would tell you, say goodbye's 1:27 length didn't hinder it at all in hitting #1 in my chart. From then on, hits came easily for Sarcastic Sounds, who had now proved himself as a vocalist and instrumentalist as well as a producer. He achieved a couple more hits in his own right in 2021, and another chart-topper kicked 2022 off, in the form of Disappointment.

Therefore, with all of these prior singles included on his debut EP, I was very excited to hear I'm a Disappointment in full, even if only two songs were brand new. One of them particularly spoke to me. ohfuckimnotok is a continuation of say goodbye musically, with chirpy, happy production aided by a ukulele and breezy "ooh"s to sing along to. The track, though, is quite self-explanatory. It's about not being okay, and around the time of this song's release, I wasn't okay. The first half of 2022 was actually quite rough for me in a couple of ways and this song somehow put all of my feelings into 2 and a half minutes. Normally, a song that relates to me that explicitly would be quite a tough listen, but I found it a comfort. I wasn't okay, and I wasn't alone in that, and I knew it'd get better (it has, for now anyway). ohfuckimnotok became a third #1 single for Sarcastic Sounds (real name Jeremy Fedryk), matching the number of #1s Powfu had (they don't actually share any #1s despite their frequent collaborations), and the EP topped my album chart too. Sarcastic Sounds has become an important artist for me over the course of 2022, and with new music now being teased, it's not impossible to imagine him featuring highly again next year.

6 Latto & Mariah Carey feat. DJ Khaled - Big Energy | 6-4-11-17-24-33-x-4-6-13-15-8-10-3-8-18-11-12-21-25-25-26-24-31-25-27-28-35-31-36-35-38-x

It's very rare that I allow a song into my EOY on more than one occasion. Most songs peak in one year or another and any crossover is due to a chart run bridging the gap between two years. A song has to have impacted significantly in another year to feature again, whether that be an album track that impacted upon release before gaining traction as a single (e.g. Rita Ora's Only Want You, which was a #1 under both criteria in 2018 and 2019 respectively), or a song that simply had a bigger lease of life later down the line (e.g. Charlie Puth's One Call Away). Another criteria of course is a remix being released. A remix that impacts notably on its own, though few notable examples exist that weren't just your typical single mix, like the aforementioned Rita Ora song adding 6LACK for its single mix.

Big Energy is therefore a pretty remarkable case on its own. I first discovered it at the VMAs 2021, where Latto had one of the rising artist slots, and Big Energy immediately hit my top 10. I loved the sample of the track, famously used in Mariah Carey's Fantasy as well (which is where I know it from), and Latto's energy (no pun intended) was brilliant. It just missed my 2021 EOY top 100, hitting #101! I was gobsmacked when a remix of Big Energy was announced in 2022, with Mariah Carey hopping onto the track (as well as DJ Khaled). Mariah re-recorded the first verse of Fantasy for the track (plus an iconic whistle note intro) while Latto added a new verse as well ("got Mimi on the remix"), and their chemistry added so much more life to an already excellent song. The track re-entered at its peak of #4, eventually hitting a new peak of #3 and becoming one of the longest-running hits of the year. I added Mariah and Khaled to the credit of the song in my chart (and though it's combined with the solo version's run, they remain uncredited for 2021 for obvious reasons), and it's become the highest-placed EOY hit for every artist involved, as well as the highest placed non-#1 of 2022. The solo version of Big Energy just feels empty now I have the remix in my life, and it becoming a chart hit around the world was even more satisfying, even if Spotify's snub was ridiculous...!

5 Benson Boone - In the Stars | 1-1-4-16-7-8-2-6-14-17-20-25-20-8-14-22-25-27-29-30-38-40-x-36-x

Every now and then, an artist I'm a big fan of has a chart breakthrough, and it's always an exciting time. I was a fan of artists like Alec Benjamin and Conan Gray before they hit the UK top 40 with Let Me Down Slowly and Heather respectively, hopped on board with The Kid LAROI a few months before he made it big with WITHOUT YOU, and going back a bit further, I'd backed Luke Friend all the way on X Factor so to see him score a top 40 hit (even at #40) with Hole in My Heart was a thrilling moment. It's one of the greatest thrills of following the charts, being able to see your new favourite artists breaking through, no matter how minor the hit was.

It's funny to claim this sense of pride for somebody who I literally discovered through the chart, I guess. I first heard Benson Boone's GHOST TOWN when it was in the UK top 100, but in the world of TikTok dominating the charts and playlist makers not buying into the artists behind the viral hits, I wasn't sure Benson would ever grace the chart again, no matter how early in his career he was. Coupled with the fact that ROOM FOR 2 missed the chart entirely, and In the Stars charting so high suddenly feels more surprising. Peaking at #21 in the UK (one of three UK #21 hits in my top 10...), In the Stars was teased on TikTok in advance, and it's easy to see what connected. Written about losing his grandmother, In the Stars is a touching ballad, allowing Benson's relatable lyrics and incredible vocal to shine over the piano backing track. It spent two weeks at #1 in my chart and has now matched the EOY position he achieved exactly a year ago with GHOST TOWN, topping off an exceptionally strong year for the American singer.

4 The Kid LAROI - Thousand Miles | 1-2-2-6-17-8-9-11-15-19-20-23-3-8-14-16-23-26-26-27-27-37-39-x

Since I started compiling End of Year countdowns in 2012, a UK #21 hit had never once featured in my top 10. Justin Bieber's As Long As You Love Me came the closest, peaking at #22, but never the magic #21. What is the significance of #21, I hear you ask? The significance is that the last three songs in this year's top 10 have all peaked at #21. Latto & Mariah Carey's Big Energy, Benson Boone's In the Stars, and now this, Thousand Miles by The Kid LAROI. All three missed the top 20 by a whisker. I've never known so many of my favourites get so unlucky when it comes to a top 20 hit rate in one year...!

Nevertheless, it goes without saying that Thousand Miles was a much bigger success in my own chart. The first new single from Laroi since STAY and F*CK LOVE 3 came out, Thousand Miles became Laroi's ninth #1 hit and the biggest opening week playcount of the year (136 plays in its first week alone). Perhaps it doesn't have the big chorus of STAY, which might explain why it didn't catch on as much in the charts, but there's a lot to credit Thousand Miles for. Laroi's vocals are at their best, and the production is perfectly pitched for the vibe of the track. Thousand Miles had three stints in my top 10, broken first by the Harry's House album bomb pushing it down, but later boosted by Laroi's own takeover as a result of his tour, sending it all the way back up to #3. I'm not sure whether Thousand Miles will end up on Laroi's long-delayed debut studio album, but it still ends up as Laroi's highest track of what's been a disappointingly quiet year for him. It might not be a hat-trick of #1s, but Thousand Miles has still earned its spot as a year-defining hit, solidifying Laroi as the artist with the most EOY top 10 hits (this is his sixth in just three years, with runner-up being Justin Bieber with five). Bring on the new music any day now...!

3 Harry Styles - As It Was | 1-1-4-3-7-5-10-4-16-15-18-8-18-19-21-27-24-26-27-30-30-30-28-29-36-38-37-x

Only one artist in my EOY's history has ever won it more than once. Perhaps that's unlucky for Harry Styles, who technically should, in addition to 2017's winner Sign of the Times, have 2011 under his belt too. As part of One Direction, Harry dominated my listening with What Makes You Beautiful, which was my top song of the year among many quality tracks, but I only started my chart on Christmas Eve 2011 so compiling an End of Year chart wasn't even on my radar then. Harry's been arguably even more unlucky since, losing a tight battle in 2019 with Lights Up, and huge hit Watermelon Sugar being split across two years. As one of my favourite artists, it's obvious Harry will stand a chance of claiming a second EOY #1 again, but unfortunately, 2022 isn't quite the time!

Leading the Harry's House campaign, As It Was came out at the beginning of April. Unlike Lights Up, As It Was came with a pre-announced and long-rumoured release, and my hype was of course very high. From first play, I loved the song, and it got better and better as it went along. The song might not have the biggest chorus of the year, but that works to its charm. It's undoubtedly a grower, even for me, because each time I played it on release day I liked it even more, and I ultimately played it over 100 times in its first week. Unsurprisingly, it debuted at #1 and spent two weeks there, followed by a lengthy run in the top 10, where it returned to after I saw Harry live in the summer. Harry's lead singles have EOY positions of #1, #2 and #3 in that order now, which is a pretty cool feat if they couldn't all make #1. It's been amazing to see As It Was be so dominant in the global charts, too, finishing as the biggest song of the year in the UK. I never envisaged something so huge, even though I knew Harry was in a better position than ever going into this era. It's highly deserved, though. I've seen people with such varied tastes all saying how much they love the song, so its appeal is undeniable, and it's firmly my favourite UK EOY #1 at least since Britney's ...Baby One More Time, if not ever.

2 David Guetta & Bebe Rexha - I'm Good (Blue) | 1-1-1-2-3-2-2-3-5-10-6-6-10-11-13-13-17-...

Some may consider this blasphemous, but I can't hide how I feel. I can't really stand Blue (Da Ba Dee) by Eiffel 65. It's just one of those songs I find so ANNOYING. The vocals are grating and it's repetitive beyond belief. My cousin had it on repeat when at my grandparents' one day and it was torture. Rumours of a David Guetta version didn't fill me with much hope when they first surfaced years back, though the leaked version with Bebe Rexha on vocals didn't sound too bad. Maybe I was being harsh? Perhaps there's more to credit in the song than I first expected. One lesson I've learned over the years is to willingly be proved wrong when it comes to music - otherwise you're shutting out the potential for something to grow.

Finally, after some TikTok virality, David Guetta and Bebe Rexha released their newly polished I'm Good (Blue) in late August 2022. Curious, I pressed play and ended up really liking it. Bebe's vocals are as sublime as always, and the production really complemented the melody taken from Blue (Da Ba Dee). Credit where it's due, it has a really brilliant melody, and this proves that my dislike of the original (that still stands, I'm sorry x) wasn't because there's nothing redeemable about it. Initially, I thought the song would contend for a top 3 debut in my chart, but its strength grew as the week went on, defeating its biggest competition from Elton & Britney to debut at #1, becoming Guetta's first #1 single since 2016's Shed a Light, and Bebe's first since 2018's Girls. It held the top spot for three weeks, and to my delight, became a UK #1 single too, a first for Bebe! It was amazing to see her finally achieve such an impressive accolade.

I'm still yet to feel even a little bored of I'm Good (Blue), and it returned to my top 10 for a 14th non-consecutive week in my most recent chart. Amazingly, it's already the longest running hit for either artist (19 weeks) and it still hasn't left my top 20 for even one week. Not only that, but it's Guetta's first EOY top 10 (after *just* missing out with Shed a Light) and Bebe's second, her highest so far (following her feature on Louis Tomlinson's Back to You, which hit EOY #9). The song's success is unprecedented, but I always love a good surprise, and while Bebe is a consistent hitmaker in my chart and Guetta is no stranger to my top 10 either, I'm Good (Blue) is a song that's proven greater than the sum of its parts.

1 Ruel - YOU AGAINST YOURSELF | 12-1-3-2-2-3-4-3-1-2-3-7-7-7-12-12-15-14-16-...

I discovered Ruel (full name Ruel van Dijk) back in 2018 through a YouTube recommendation. Most of the time, YouTube recommendations aren't all that great. I've clicked on so many that appear on my homepage and few have been anything more than average, basic tracks. There was something special about Ruel's voice from the moment I heard it, though. Dazed & Confused, his second single as primary artist, was the song I clicked on, and it hit me immediately. Just 15 at the time of its release, Ruel's lyrics were wiser than his years, and it's no wonder Elton John praised his debut single Don't Tell Me so highly (he said "It's astonishing someone so young can write something so good. I give up" !!!). Dazed & Confused was an instant top 5 hit in my chart, and it kickstarted a very consistent run of hits for Ruel.

With two EPs under his belt, attention turned to Ruel's debut album in late 2019. With it taking longer than he expected, Ruel dropped EP Bright Lights, Red Eyes in late 2020, but two years on, the album hasn't arrived yet. With standalone single too many feelings dropping in 2021, the campaign was supposed to begin with GROWING UP IS _____ later that year, but it appears both that and LET THE GRASS GROW have either been relegated to non-album single status, or have simply been overlooked to drive more attention to newer material. Summer saw Ruel confirm the first single from the album, YOU AGAINST YOURSELF, would drop at the end of August.

When this song dropped, Ruel already had three chart-toppers under his belt, so he was no stranger to the top spit. 2019's Painkiller was the first, and he achieved one #1 each in 2020 and 2021. I knew YOU AGAINST YOURSELF would be good, but it's safe to say it surpassed my expectations. I was *really* impressed on first play. The track is energetic, more so than a typical Ruel song, and his vocals aren't diminished by that either. Ruel's incredible voice shows its range, his falsetto dominating the singalong chorus with stadium ready chants: "selfish ways are suffocating, I can't save you now"). Not to mention the fantastic bridge, which is perhaps my favourite section of any song all year. The dopamine released every time the bridge hits and I get to yell "you're going out almost every night, and you wonder why YOU FEEL FUCKED UP" was amplified tenfold when I experienced it live...! Lyrically, it's powerful and hard-hitting, too. The track is a message to somebody who's on a self-destructive route, and in the song's brilliant music video, it's Ruel who hosts an "intervention" for himself.

The song, released on a Thursday, debuted at #12 in the chart I typed up the following day (I type up my chart on Friday nights before formatting and posting on Saturdays), which is an exceptionally strong opening for just one day. Unsurprisingly, YOU AGAINST YOURSELF climbed to #1 the following week, dethroning Kate Nash's Wasteman from the top and holding off competition from Boy In Space's Lean On, also new that week. Though David Guetta and Bebe Rexha's I'm Good (Blue) took over at #1 a week later, Ruel held his own in the top 10, spending 13 consecutive weeks in the top tier (returning for a 14th in my current chart) and even climbing back up to #1 on the 8th of those weeks; a return to #1 is rare in my chart at any time but particularly after such a long time away. In fact, YOU AGAINST YOURSELF spent more time in my top 10 than all bar three of Ruel's songs have spent in my top 40 (Younger, Painkiller and GROWING UP IS _____), but it's firmly first place for total top 40 weeks with 21 under its belt now, having spent its entire run so far in my top 20.

YOU AGAINST YOURSELF was my BJSC entry in September's contest, finishing in an okay but underwhelming 32nd place, but it's the first BJSC entry of mine to top my EOY since Conrad Sewell's Hold Me Up in 2015. Of course, Ruel hasn't yet broken through into the global charts. He's only had a few minor hits in his home country of Australia (though he was born in Isleworth, not far from me!), but I'm really hoping a commercial breakthrough for Ruel is on the way. A four year journey to YOU AGAINST YOURSELF has seen him finally top my EOY chart with an insanely great pop track, and with his album release date due to be announced any day now, it's bound to be a big 2023 for Ruel, whether that's just in my personal chart or perhaps if he strikes it lucky and lands a commercial hit. Either way, I hope he'll be releasing quality tracks and blessing us with his insanely good voice for years to come.
