January 5, 20232 yr Author Hello! Pure/honey is defiyths highlight of the album for me. I was literally gagging for it to be a single. This whole album has been a squandered mess much like Adele's kabum unfortunately. Western wind is pretty decent though not the best comeback single I wouldn't say. She's done much better on all of her albums. I really wish I could have likes sunset but it was a bit too far out there for me. I donlive Caroline though and her newest track is a bop! PURE/HONEY would've been a great single! Maybe not the most commercial-sounding song (I'd probably go for VIRGO'S GROOVE or COSY next) but it would've been a real moment for sure. I've grown to appreciate Western Wind even more than when it came out, for me it's a great lead! But I can see it might not be everyone's favourite. Ah it's a shame Sunset hasn't done much for you, but I'm glad you're enjoying Welcome To My Island more! ^_^

The promise of a Rina collab was always going to be a Moment™, and the result was an instant success: 2 weeks at #1 with a further 4 in the top ten. While it's a shame Rina doesn't feature more heavily, it's still a massive bop. The sample doesn't feel forced and I'm so glad it turned into a big UK hit too. I know this song gets criticised a lot online but I'm a big fan. It's a banger, even if it does sound like an attempt at a commercial smash. When I heard it would feature Perfume Genius (arguably the Ed Sheeran of my chart :kink:), I struggled to imagine how he'd fit into their sound! Anything But Me was a big smash early in the year, climbing to the top spot where it stayed for 2 weeks. It's definitely since been overshadowed by their follow-up hits, but the iconic opening lines "you're gonna say that I'm on a high horse, I think that my horse is regular-sized" still let you know you're about to witness a major bop. One thing that didn't change was the success: this song spent 15 weeks on my chart with a peak of #3. It's a reflective track that builds to a big anthemic chorus. King Princess's EOY history: 2020 64 Only Time Makes It Human 2022 18 For My Friends 17. It's Mitski's biggest hit ever on my chart, going 2x Platinum (which is totally real and not something I made up). Like previous single The Only Heartbreaker, this song sees Mitski trade the usual guitars for a synthier backing, without sacrificing any of her emotional urgency. It's hugely dramatic and moving. Mitski's EOY history: 2021 97 The Only Heartbreaker 2022 17 Love Me More 16. Cast of tick, tick... Anyway I saw this song climbing the Spotify charts and figured I'd check it out, absolutely loved it. It reminds me of the more theatrical My Chemical Romance songs (e.g. from The Black Parade), and lyrically it's about not quite accepting that you're growing up. I watched the film (tick, tick... BOOM! on Netflix, it's based on the autobiographical stage musical of the same name by Jonathan Larson, who went on to write Rent) soon after, and absolutely loved the entire soundtrack. I especially enjoyed the more rock-leaning tracks like No More. Cast of tick, tick... BOOM!'s EOY history: 2022 16 30/90

Considering how active Taylor's been over the last few years, it's really impressive how much this managed to still feel like a long-awaited comeback - just testament to her ability to build up hype. It's a vulnerable song on which Taylor sings about her insecurities and the side-effects of fame. I feel like this song just goes to show the public reappraisal she's had since the Reputation era, when a song like this would almost certainly have been overanalysed and critiqued. I'm really pleased that Taylor's somehow managed to become bigger than ever before, proving that it's absolutely possible to adapt to (AKA utterly obliterate) the streaming era. Perhaps counterintuitively, this is the bigger-selling of the two and spent more weeks at #1, but appears lower in my countdown! That's because I've recently started to prefer the other, which will show up pretty soon. Patterns is a slow, reflective track, and I'm not entirely sure what it's about - the chorus is all conditionals which might make you think it's about a past relationship, but the verses are more optimistic. It ends with "watch the garden grow, a bended knee for hope" - suggesting better things are yet to come. Stars' EOY history: 2022 14 Patterns 2022 77 Build A Fire 13. First it spent a lengthy stay in the top ten before dropping out for a bit. Then it was straight back in at #1! In the end it spent 20 weeks charting, one of the longest runs in chart history. It's a beautiful song about growing up with in a single-parent family, which is something I can relate to. It's drenched in 90s pop-rock balladry, with heavy Corrs vibes along with an opening reminiscent of My Heart Will Go On. One place it did not flop was on my chart, where it reached a peak of #3 and stuck around for 15 weeks. In BJSC I sent the David Kano remix as it packs a bit more punch, but the original has a slightly haunting yet exciting quality the remix perhaps lacks. One of my favourite things about this song is that the lyrics are just at the right speed that I can actually understand them! *cough cough Rosalía* El Columpio Asesino's EOY history: 2022 12 Preparada 11. Little Bother, or Little Brother as autocorrect likes to call it, was a great intro to King Princess's latest album following some more pop-leaning singles in 2020. Fousheé's verse is a great addition, turning up the lyrical vulnerability for a few quick lines. The chorus is a really anthemic moment and the whole song feels straight out of some coming-of-age movie. King Princess's EOY history: 2020 64 Only Time Makes It Human 2022 11 Little Bother (ft. It's by far the most energetic song on the album, uplifting and somewhat nostalgic for another time. I've always felt the chorus sounds exactly like something Kirsty MacColl might have put out (bear in mind I know like 3 of her songs but this sounds like all of them). As I've said before I really wish Stars held more of a place in the indie canon, their 00s output is such an incredible example of worldbuilding in music (their albums The Five Ghosts and In Our Bedroom After The War really draw you into their imagined worlds, while Heart and Set Yourself On Fire are more grounded but similarly emotionally rich). The little production flourishes and shouted backing vocals make it feel like a true diva house classic (I'm fully just plagiarising Wikipedia for these commentaries at this point). With uplifting, inspirational lyrics about "moving up that mountain top", Free Yourself became Jessie's first #1 on my chart, but I'm sure it won't be her last. This combination could so easily be a disaster but in Rina's hands it works perfectly, reminding me a lot of the genre-mixing found on Gaga's Born This Way album. As the title track of Rina's album it really sums up the experimentation and range of genres on show. It's a synth-heavy soaring pop track that definitely feels like the Save Your Tears of the album, I really think it could become a classic. However I sort of wonder if Abel is shying away from doing so because of how much the continued success of the After Hours singles overshadowed Dawn FM. Despite not having the most amazing of chart runs, I just can't get tired of this song and I've been playing it all year. The extent to which it's stuck around throughout the year is really demonstrated by its chart peak - despite peaking at #6 it's the 6th biggest song of the year, outlasting many huge #1s. I know I say this every time I talk about ROSALÍA lately and it's probably getting annoying, but this song is MASSIVE in Spain. Everyone knows it, it's constantly on the radio (wedged in between SloMo and Tacones Rojos). I work in a school and I have to tell literal 4-year-olds to stop singing it in class! And just yesterday an awkward silence in the staffroom was broken by one of the teachers belting out the opening lines and everyone joining in (I haven't yet built up the courage to shout out the lyrics to SAOKO but watch this space). It's genuinely just so bizarre after coming from the UK where ROSALÍA's very much on the underrated side, but at the same time it's very satisfying to see her getting the success she deserves here. January 11, 20232 yr Author And here's the top 3 all in one ~ 3. Tove Lo - No One Dies From Love Chart peak: 1 Sales: 1,449,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 17 Chart run: 1 - 6 - 9 - 9 - 8 - 10 - 12 - 17 - 20 - 25 - 31 - 32 - 38 - 38 - 40 - 37 - 40 - X CMWLX0KXwF4 No One Dies From Love burst onto the scene with a #1 debut, and deservedly so: it's a synth-pop banger that serves as the perfect introduction to Dirt Femme, Tove's latest album. Tove's EOY history: 2022 03 No One Dies From Love 2022 55 Pineapple Slice (ft. SG Lewis) 2022 94 How Long 2. MUNA - Home By Now Chart peak: 1 Sales: 1,495,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 24 Chart run: 16 - 10 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 10 - 14 - 17 - 24 - 30 - 37 - 40 - RE - 40 - RE - 36... 4JlmFyD7hXo Home By Now is MUNA's typical anthemic brand of pop, with a hugely infectious chorus. The lyrics are addressed to a former partner, learning that they've moved on ("heard that you were selling your piano and your car") and beginning to question what could have been ("would we have turned a corner if I had waited?"). Despite its reflective subject matter this song's production is undeniably feel-good. Like its predecessors Silk Chiffon and I Know A Place, I can definitely see this becoming a Netflix soundtrack staple. It's a euphoric track which is firmly one of the band's best. MUNA's EOY history: 2021 08 Silk Chiffon (ft. Phoebe Bridgers) 2022 02 Home By Now 2022 10 What I Want 2022 21 Anything But Me 2022 70 Kind Of Girl 1. Shygirl - Firefly Chart peak: 1 Sales: 1,564,000 (2x Platinum) Weeks on chart: 25 Chart run: 2 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 3 - 4 - 4 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 11 - 15 - 14 - 14 - 16 - 16 - 19 - 22 - 27 - 33 - 38 - RE - 39 - RE - 33... kEmWsCJzIs4 2022 was the year of Shygirl, and here she is with the biggest song of 2022! It's been a monster smash on my chart, with 3 weeks at #1, a mammoth 3 MONTHS in the top 10, and 25 weeks in total on the chart (that's the longest ever chart run, tied with Charli XCX's Good Ones but likely to overtake next week!). Musically, it's a 00s-inspired R&B track that sounds quite different from Shygirl's previous dark house/club sound. In places Firefly reminds me of something Tinashe might release, and perfectly sets up the Nymph era which features a lot more genre exploration. I still can't get enough of this song and it obviously made #1 on my Spotify Wrapped (causing multiple people to think I'd been playing Owl City's "Fireflies" all year instead ). Congrats to Shygirl! Shygirl's EOY history: 2022 01 Firefly 2022 81 papi bones (with FKA Twigs) And that's it! Thank you to anyone who's commented and read along ^_^
