The song charted as an album track upon the release of F*CK LOVE (SAVAGE), a re-issue of Laroi's debut mixtape, and climbed to #1 at the end of 2020 (in the interim, his Juice WRLD collaboration Reminds Me of You had been released and reached the top). This coincided with its chart impact, as WITHOUT YOU became Laroi's breakthrough hit around the world, peaking at #2 in the UK and in the top 10 in the US. This one couldn't be separated by peak nor weeks on chart as both are identical (WITHOUT YOU also peaked at #1 with 33 weeks on the chart). Hard Out Here wins the tiebreak by weeks at #1 - it spent a huge five there! Rewind just a little though. By late 2013, it had been over four years since Lily Allen's last album, and I was desperate for new music. A feature on P!nk's hit True Love was great but not enough to satisfy my appetite. Suddenly, we get two new songs within a week. Her gorgeous cover of Somewhere Only We Know was the bigger chart hit, but it was all about Hard Out Here for me. The former was stuck behind the latter in my chart for four weeks (the unluckiest #2 in my chart's history!), but Hard Out Here just wouldn't budge. The feminist anthem (and its incredible video) was an instant smash for me and I still love it now, the lyrics unfortunately still ring far too true. Worth noting that its EOY position was definitely hindered by a release so late in the year, there are actually only two 2013 tracks above it here. Lily's first two albums predated my chart, but she's had a further two #1s since then, and once again I'm left craving new Lily music, please return in 2023 Lily! Out of all rappers, only The Kid LAROI has more #1s (and it could be argued he's primarily more of a singer than rapper). Iggy achieved seven chart-toppers in exactly 2 years, but it's now been over 4 years since she reached the top 10. Nevertheless, the era of The New Classic still holds up for me, and Trouble was the closing single from it. From the moment the re-issued album Reclassified dropped, I loved the bouncy vibe of Trouble, made especially brilliant by Jennifer Hudson's perfectly pitched vocals. I couldn't have asked for a better music video either, and all of this came together to see the song peak at #1 on its 15th week in my top 40 across two separate runs. Two songs from 2020 feature here, and three from 2021, all three from the latter year are in this top 10. It's notable that this is the only one, though, that isn't by The Kid LAROI. Boy In Space is another of the breakout stories of the past few years for me. Swedish singer Robin Lundbäck found some fame in Melodifestivalen contestants JTR in 2015, before starting his Boy In Space project with debut solo single Goodbye in 2018. I discovered him supporting Alec Benjamin in London, and fell in love immediately! He's featured in my EOY top 2 in two consecutive years, but it's Sucker Punch that had the longest tail in my chart. STILL CHOSE YOU was initially intended to be the lead single from Laroi's debut album, though a lot change. A delay in clearing the Jorja Smith sample at the beginning of the song followed by a change of plans anyway to release STAY as the lead single from a third chapter of F*CK LOVE saw it relegated to album track, though a new music video was filmed to round the era out. STILL CHOSE YOU is the perfect closing chapter to the era, too. Naturally, a mixtape titled F*CK LOVE isn't going to talk positively about relationships, but STILL CHOSE YOU is about finding new love in spite of everything. I'd dipped in and out of Melodifestivalen since 2013, but this was the song that reminded me of just how many great songs can come from that contest and it's what got me watching religiously every year since. Frans Jeppsson Wall was 16 years old at the time and had previously found fame on a song called Fotbollsfest, which reached #1 in Sweden when Frans was only 10 years old. If I Were Sorry was his first release since then, and the first I'd ever heard of him. The laidback production mixed with his unique vocal style were instant winners, and the song debuted at #2 in my chart just behind Fifth Harmony's Work from Home, which it overtook to spend 4 consecutive weeks at the top. Of course, the song won Melfest and went on to represent Sweden in Eurovision 2016, where it came fifth (boosting it back for an apt fifth week at the top of my chart). Its run was quite something, charting effectively in a number of different versions until it finally hit the top spot. Its debut week came in the form of a live version, recorded at the O2 during their support slot for Taylor Swift. I saw them during one of those nights and heard Oh Cecilia for the first time, immediately loving it, so the live version (a b-side to Last Night) kept me going for a week until the album Meet the Vamps arrived with its studio version. It climbed into the top 10 the next week and had a decent run as an album track, later re-entering when it was confirmed as the fifth single. The Shawn Mendes version took over as the most popular in the week it climbed 13-2 and has been my go-to version since, and it peaked at #1 just a week later. Despite the chart history below, it's not Shawn's first hit (Life of the Party had charted before he was added to the credit of Oh Cecilia), but it was his first top 10 and also the first of his eight #1s! Here's a song that I can't really say that about, and it's obvious in the run above! As with most people, I discovered Conrad through his megahit Firestone with Kygo, and as Firestone grew on me, I checked out his solo material. Hold Me Up was solid, pretty decent, and charted for a single week in April 2015. As Firestone kept growing (it was quite a slow burner), I returned to Hold Me Up, and the more I heard it, the more I loved it. A few weeks later, it re-entered at #4 and then climbed to #1, holding the top spot for a record 6 weeks (no song to this day has managed more consecutive weeks, though it's been tied by Rita Ora's Anywhere and The Kid LAROI's STAY) and blocking both Firestone and his own song Start Again from #1! December 25, 20222 yr I played the Vamps and Shawn one just last week! Decent track again from them but Shawn more than upgraded with his own solo singles for me. 'Hold Me Up' was great, shame he burned out pretty quickly. Could've done with more dance features from him at least :(
