Honestly I think their split ended up being at the right time, because the way music was going... I think Steps might have suffered a similar fate to S Club, had they continued into 2002/2003. For the sake of their legacy, even though it clearly was painful and hurtful for them to split at that point in time, in the end I think it was worth it! It gave them a backstory that the media and public seemed obsessed with when Steps returned in 2011 (thanks to the documentary series that focused on the repercussions of the split). Even during last year’s promotion they’re still asked questions about the 2001 split.

The way the split was handled was bad, but i agree it did give them a great backstory that made them reforming more interesting to the general public, there is probably some curiosity from some corners wondering is the past really the past which i suppose keeps it interesting from that point of view.
Although the split was devastating, it definitely was the right time for them to end their first era. I honestly think Baby Don’t Dance would have broken their top 5 chart streak, and it would have been a slippery slope after that with a different kind of pop music taking over from the likes of Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Liberty X etc. and I think Steps shifting into that sound to try and keep up would have been somewhat alienating to casual fans. They’d have fizzled out like S Club if they’d continued. Ultimately it allowed for this rejuvenation to happen which we are seriously and unbelievably blessed to have. If they’d not gone out with an unexpected and dramatic bang while still at the height of their success, we probably would never have got any new material from them 10+ years later.
I think they would have had another successful album era had they released their 4th studio album the year after Gold but that they would have eventually ended up like S Club definitely. Their split was the right time in the long run for them.
If they had a follow up to follow straight after Gold it would have done well, and probably very well if they had a strong lead single.

I know this isn't steps related but I need your help! Hey everyone, I know a few of you voted in Round 6 of the Katy Perry singles Survivor. There was an accident in the thread and we had to restart the poll. So if you don't mind, can you please go and vote back in there again thanks x

Get out!!!

I’m a little late in mentioning this anniversary - Here and Now/You’ll Be Sorry entered at #4 in the UK chart, 20 years (and 1 week) ago :o
I agree, one part of me is like it seems an age since steps had a big hit and the other seems like it was only 10 years ago, a hit though these days has a different meaning and the measure of success for a band like steps is so different these days comparing to the olden days.

A new activity for the Steps forum will be launched later today! #hype

Wasn’t sure where to post this but I’m thinking of doing a Steps Singles World Cup Game similar to the one I’m running on the Little Mix forum. Would that be ok? Would there be much interest?
