Posted December 29, 20222 yr SUGABABES are at the centre of a bidding war by record labels after staging the biggest pop comeback of the year. The original line-up of the Nineties girlband, Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy, are planning to return to the studio in 2023, which will mark the 25th anniversary of the group’s formation. I’ve been told that several record labels are vying to work with the trio after an incredible year in which they headlined London’s Mighty Hoopla festival, toured the country and caused chaos at Glastonbury with one of the most in-demand sets of the festival. A music insider said: “There are lots of Nineties and Noughties acts which reunite and it’s a bit cheesy and full of nostalgia, but the original Sugababes are actually cool, credible artists. “They have really impressed people at the major labels this year with their voices. “The reaction from fans proves they are really a viable act to have huge success with new music. “They have some great ideas for songs and reckon they can win over a whole new generation of Sugababes fans. “The hope is that they will sign to a label at the beginning of the year and have new music out at some point in the next 12 months.” The group had a revolving line-up throughout the Noughties but they racked up an impressive 18 Top Ten singles, with six No1s including Freak Like Me, Round Round, Hole In The Head and Push The Button. On Saturday they surprised fans by uploading to streaming services The Lost Tapes, their unreleased album recorded in 2014 but leaked online before it officially came out. It has already racked up millions of streams and caused even more excitement about what is to come from the girls. Next year will see them play their biggest headline show to date at London’s O2 Arena on September 15. Something tells me they might just have a few new songs to sing by then. I personally believe it, they are usually always correct when it comes to Little Mix (and solo) news.
December 29, 20222 yr Nice to read something positive however millions of streams for The Lost Tapes isn’t accurate.
December 29, 20222 yr If true (and I lean towards that it is), I really hope they don’t fall into another Polydor trap deal! I don’t want to wait for another 10 years. But I’m sure the girls also learned and know what do they need from a label now. 90’s girlband though :frankie:
December 29, 20222 yr Hahaha 90’s girl band. Hopefully it’s true. I agree BMG might be good. Isn’t that who Steps and Kylie are with?
December 29, 20222 yr Mirror also picking this up this morning! Great news to see the hardwork being firmly acknowledged and also appreciating that they’re far from some kitschy nostalgia run, they’re a tour de force and a viable hit making machine for years to come Nice to read something positive however millions of streams for The Lost Tapes isn’t accurate. Technically if you I cause Flatline, as Spotify has done, then it is already over a million streams 😇
December 29, 20222 yr Whatever happens I hope they retain their masters though. Important in case they get polydor‘d again
December 29, 20222 yr I feel that both of the articles overhype them though. “Number 2 in iTunes” barely means anything, as well as “thousands of likes in Instagram post”. “Millions of streams” already mentioned. That makes me question the initial point. I mean I’m sure they are in talks for some nice deals, but nothing extraordinary. But all they need is a normal budget for the album and smart marketing with good playlisting. I hope they get that (as I’m sure the quality of the material will be ace regardless).
December 29, 20222 yr I feel that both of the articles overhype them though The British press aren't well-known for being balanced - at least it's positive which can only help them.

It is the tabloids so there is an element of exaggeration included as standard. But with nil promo, an indie release and no playlisting etc they have done pretty respectably with this total 110% bit of fan service album. If they can squeeze into the end of the top 100 that would be perfection. Add a sold out tour and extremely good ticket sales for the O2 of all places, they’ve had a bloody good year and they’ve shown their worth and that they are still marketable and that they are worth a major label backing
December 29, 20222 yr BMG would be a good home for them, and hey wasn’t a label that deals well with nostalgia and retro acts. They will likely never trouble the singles chart again so they want a label that will focus on albums and tours. They could enjoy Steps type success if promoted right. My only downside toBMG is that steps actually had way better promo for Tears which was their independent release…
December 29, 20222 yr I do agree about BMG and also your comment about Steps, they did far better with promotion when independent with Tears on the the Dancefloor but overall BMG have worked good for Steps, and i have to say BMG have done great with Kylie so far. Sugababes like Kylie and Steps wont be troubling the singles chart unless they have a tik tok moment so getting a silver or gold selling album and good tour numbers is the best outcome which i think the Sugababes can do. Its clear they are putting in the work and its taking them a long time to get to this point which shows how determined they are to make it work. Sometimes i wonder how it would have all worked out had the 3 original members stayed together from the off.
December 29, 20222 yr I think BMG would be a good fit, though ideally I'd at least like to see them *trying* to get at least the first single onto the charts. The Lost Tapes haven't done too badly on streaming considering they just threw it up right before Christmas, so it'd be interesting to see what they could do with a push.
December 29, 20222 yr The moment I saw the article, my thinking goes "BMG is the only label they can go to". I read several articles on how BMG works with Kylie since the Golden release. It seems that BMG is the only label so far to give their artists the greatest freedom in creativity and the like as long as the result shows on album charts and touring.
December 31, 20222 yr I hope it is BMG and the girls have full control!!!!! And to be honest, BMG management seems to be more reliable.
