January 1, 20232 yr Aww at “Temptation” ranking at the bottom of your 90s #1s, I actually really like it.. Brothers In Rhythm were great, when I had to review and writeup that single for the 1990s dance #1s thread with Colm I actually spent the entire review talking about them instead of Heaven 17!! “Made It Back” was always a bit of diet banger back in the day which I really enjoyed at the time, granted it's a bit dated now. “One Week” getting one week at number 1 *.* . I much prefer They Might Be Giants for quirky 90s North American pop rock, but I think I did enjoy this at the time. Good for Karaoke... Divine Comedy were almost the first single I ever bought (“National Express”) but the single was faulty so I had to return it and in its place I got “You Get What You Give” by New Radicals. Lovely nostalgic read and great to get an insight to what you were enjoying at the time. : ) Keeping a personal chart was the equivalent of a personal diary for me, a great way of retreading your past so its great you've got it to reflect back on.
January 1, 20232 yr love the Leftfield track, easily their best effort for me King of Snake is ok but not a patch on Born Slippy always had a soft spot for Always Have,Always Will, very nice track from Ace of Base always liked Divine Comedy too but cannot recall that one
January 1, 20232 yr Always Have, Always Will was the first single I bought for myself (on cassette). A really good track that deserved to be a top ten hit over the Cruel Summer cover that was. Following this chart with interest Dandy, especially interesting to see what has grown on you over time! Also completely agree Dr B, that keeping a personal chart was the equivalent of a personal diary. I never kept a diary, yet look back on any number of my charts from over the years I was doing them and memories and moments flood back. Funny how music places you back at a specific moment in time.
January 1, 20232 yr That Leftfield track is good, obviously it was their biggest hit but without sounding like one of those people.. I much prefer their earlier stuff like “Song of Life” <3
January 1, 20232 yr Author 258 | Terence Trent D'arby - Let Her Down Easy A rare appearance of a ballad in my list of chart toppers. My dad had been a huge fan of the Introducing the Hardline... album in the 80s so I was already familiar with him before 1993 and I'd been intrigued enough by the previous singles to get myself the Symphony or Damn album (it turned out to be quite arty but pretty decent after a few listens) and this was one of the songs that really grew into a highlight for me. It's a really sweet song about not taking advantage of young love and instead being considerate towards someone who may have a crush on you. This is another I've not listened to in ages, probably not since the 90s but it's aged well enough. Definitely one of my favourite things about looking back through these is seeing the variety of music I used to listen to, I think I'll stick this on an acoustic playlist actually now I've listened again. Interestingly there wasn't a lot of competition at the time with no major faves around, however there are quite a few looking back that I love now with Kate Bush, Pulp and Naughty By Nature making the pick. The stats: Date: 21 November 1993 Weeks: Two 1990s chart rank: 224 2020s plays rank: 265 Biggest song it kept from #1: (#5 in w/c 21 November 1993) Biggest fave now that I didn't love at the time: , , LmobsqVKJu8
January 1, 20232 yr that is great from TTD, loved the 4 singles from that album, Let Her Down Easy was the final one I think
January 1, 20232 yr I know very little about The Divine Comedy but 'The Certainty of Chance' sounds really good, very dark and cinematic with philosophical lyrics that grabbed me. ...slight whiplash going from that to 'Always Have, Always Will' - that one is not for me at all, I'm afraid. I do like 'Life Is A Flower' and 'Happy Nation' from them though. I thought the Terence Trent D'arby song was going to be a snoozefest from the first minute (:kink:) but I did enjoy it a bit more from the half way point onwards, that instrumental finale was nice.
January 1, 20232 yr Author Ooooo I wasn’t expecting any love for TTD so glad to see you’re a fan Björk, I loved Delicate with Buzzjack legend Des’Ree too
January 1, 20232 yr Smash Mouth were great fun, I liked their hits and Walkin' On The Sun peaked at 6 in my charts, a great record. Beverley Knight is always class but Keep This Fire Burning was my number one from her, made It Back almost made my top 10.
January 1, 20232 yr Afrika Shox was a good top 20 track to me and I had no idea about those Afrika Bambaata allegations (there have been no convictions as of yet) but he was a corner stone of the synth-rap-dance hybrid that has long and influential reaches from the early 80's. I would, though, rate Supergrass higher too than this track. Terence's wasn;t one of my fave tracks of TTD, Delicate was the one to rate for me of the 90s stuff. Never heard that Underworld track (or if I did I don't recall ever hearing it) so moving on to another I don't remember - The Divine Comedy. I didn't chart it so I prob didn't hear it (I generally always like Neil H) but Generation Sex was a goodie in 1998. Always Have liked Ace Of Base, Always Will, and this Bee Gees beat pop goodie was a fave peaking at 3 for moi. Chain Reaction anyone? Music tastes do change as you get older - but not always! This is my fave of this batch. I'm self-fascinated by what I loved in 1972 and what I now love more from 1972 in 2022, I've been very surprised at how I am into more soul/rock/mellow stuff than the poppy stuff. Though I always retain fondness for old loves.
January 1, 20232 yr I used to be a big TTD fan, his debut is one of the best debuts ever, very under-rated I know not many like him in here cos he always does poorly in rates But I really thought he was gonna be as big as Jacko, Madonna or Prince but alas... :D not really Just checked and his 92 album was very unlucky, he got 4 hit singles but all charted between 12-18 and none made the top 10: Do you love me like you say/14 Delicate/14 (Terence TrentD’Arby ft Des’ree) She kissed me/16 Let her down easy/18
January 1, 20232 yr Of course it was… it is after all a Robyn song! *.* :o :o :o I never knew that! Just played it and it's obvious it's her style. Somehow I never got to hear that track before Bev's version :o
January 1, 20232 yr Author 257 | Cappella - U Got 2 Let The Music It's finally time to take a trip into the realm of eurodance as Cappella are the next act to feature. I get the impression that U Got 2 Know is their best remembered song but I always preferred this one and indeed it was the bigger hit here in the UK, I remember being convinced it would dethrone Meat Loaf back in 1993 but alas it never happened - and thanks to Gazza's 90s thread I realise that it was actually never even close. I still do have a soft spot for all of these types of 90s dance hits, they were fun and they remind me of skipping lessons at school to go to a travelling fair and spending money on the waltzers or speedways - really great memories and the likes of this or Rhythm Of The Night will always take me right back to those moments. The stats: Date: 24 October 1993 Weeks: One 1990s chart rank: 241 2020s plays rank: 247 Biggest song it kept from #1: (#3 in w/c 24 October 1993) Biggest fave now that I didn't love at the time: N/A 5Dt8MXvYS7Y
January 1, 20232 yr Author :o :o :o I never knew that! Just played it and it's obvious it's her style. Somehow I never got to hear that track before Bev's version :o To be fair, the Beverley version was the first one I heard too ^_^
January 1, 20232 yr I trot out the same comments every time Cappella are mentioned - always more interesting than 2 Unlimited and Move On Baby was favourite Cappella song
January 1, 20232 yr Author 256 | Captain Hollywood Project - Only With You More dance from Europe up now in the form of Captain Hollywood. He/They made a bit of impact in the UK with More and More but it was always this one that resonated with me the most - I actually bought it the year before but it was the following year when it reached the top upon re-release. If you can't remember him then Captain Hollywood was very much in the Dr Alban style of popstar. I do still quite like this but it completely flopped in the UK and as such didn't stay around that long in my chart either... just listening now and I think it's the first time I've realised that it's about climate change and protecting the planet - totally the 90s version of Greta. The stats: Date: 19 June 1994 Weeks: One 1990s chart rank: 258 2020s plays rank: 229 Biggest song it kept from #1: Beautiful South - Everybody's Talkin' (#2 in w/c 19 June 1994) Biggest fave now that I didn't love at the time: Underworld - Dark and Long _vkVXbtqLpI
January 1, 20232 yr the only song from Captain Hollywood that I recall is the one with Twenty-4-Seven, I Can't Stand It which I really couldn't stand, so annoying :/
January 1, 20232 yr 'U Got 2 Let The Music' *.* that is definitely the Cappella song I know the best! My dad loved them and made sure to pass on the 90s dance bug to me  just re-listening to it now and that instrumental intro is always an instant shot of euphoria. It translated well live too at a We Love The 90s gig a few years ago. :music: 'Only With You' is completely new to me on the other hand, makes sense if it wasn't a hit here. Sounds very 90s with the male rapping verses and female sung chorus :kink: quite liking though, it doesn't sound a million miles away from the kind of Eurodance I'd occasionally send to BJSC like Pharao.
