1959. "Venus"

Frankie Avalon

{US0011/-}

"Venus" is yet another one of those overly sugary and innocuous teen pop songs from the late '50s. It's cute, has nice little singalong backing vocals, and is technically well-sung, but I just can't get into it much. It's quite boring, drags on for far too long uninterestingly so, and is far too schmaltzy for my tastes.

1974. "Jealous Mind"

Alvin Stardust

{-/UK0345}

Well, Alvin Stardust sure has one voice that doesn’t quite match the appearance. When you'd look at him, you'd think he'd have a deep sleaze rock gravel voice would come out, but the actual song sounds surprisingly high-pitched and juvenile.

In any case, this is a pretty mediocre attempt at rockabilly revival. The backing riffs and general glam rock sheen are fun, but Alvin's forced rockabilly impressions with the echo effect on top are not. Especially on the chorus when he goes into full Elvis impersonation mode. I suppose it could have been much worse so I'll be generous with the rating.

1985. "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)"

Dead or Alive

{-/UK0546}

When it’s not spoiled by that mediocre Flo Rida version, “You Spin Me Round” is an incredibly fun post-disco song. It's the very first UK number one by the Stock Aitken Waterman production team, but this time it's a refreshingly hard hitting and appropriately bombastic with incredible beats that would bring the dead back to being alive  This is a far cry from their zombified factory output of the late '80s. Most importantly, the electronic band Dead or Alive, particularly Pete Burns, successfully pushes for an androgynous and LGBT-positive aesthetic that complements the music incredibly well. Pete delivers some amazing disco diva vocals on this!

1985. "Can't Fight This Feeling"

REO Speedwagon

{US0564/-}

REO Speedwagon is one of those long-respected '70s hard rock bands that sold out hard for AOR radio in the '80s, much to the chagrin of long-time fans. "Can't Fight This Feeling" isn't bad for gloopy power balladry. Without going into full Journey hamminess, it has a nice melodic soaring chorus about unconditional love finally being expressed. That being said, the intro is poorly sung because Kevin Cronin's voice has that whiny tone that I despise (thankfully the rest is much better). And the music is such a puree of poppy guitar singalongs and keyboard sounds that it no longer sounds like rock. Surprisingly decent, but not memorable.

1991. "Should I Stay or Should I Go"

The Clash

{-/UK0661}

More 1991 chart weirdness. Levi's commercials are here to be thanked for assisting in bringing one of the greatest punk bands all the way to the top of the UK charts years after they had already disbanded (this is possibly the first in a surprisingly long series of songs Levi's assisted in their ascension). "Should I Stay or Should I Go" is a fun little piece of early '80s new wave that's surprisingly apolitical given the album it's from. But, as much as I admire the Clash, this is not their best work. It still has a lot of fun parts! Like that sticky guitar rhythm that really sticks with you, or the really goofy Spanish bits they seem to enjoy bringing up in their songs.

1991. "Someday"

Mariah Carey

{US0741/-}

The queen of the '90s US charts provides some really pleasant new jack swing effervescence. It's not as interesting as something Janet could have come up with at the time, but Mariah sure sings the hell out of this song, featuring her signature whistle register (though it's far from the best use of it). The mixing is a little sloppy (a common problem in 1991 new jack swing songs) as I don't like how the repetition part is cut up, and it doesn't quite all come together. But it's overall a good song, but I do think I might prefer MTV Unplugged over this studio version.

1996. "How Deep Is Your Love"

Take That

{-/UK0735}

Take That, best known today as the boy band that Robbie Williams founded, had a wild run on the UK charts that lasted well beyond their peak in the mid-'90s. And I'm sure they thought it was only natural to cover a legendary all-boys pop band from the past.

Eh. I guess the boy band does its best in offering a harmonious layered vocal performance to quite a compelling way here. However, they effectively turned this classic of a luxurious disco sway ballad into cruise background fodder, accompanied by bland beats and out-of-place Spanish guitar. It simply lacks the original's richness. And, while this band does its best to put on a good vocal performance, it sorely lacks the dynamic range of the Gibbs brothers. The video clip is very weird too.

Can't Fight This Feeling started out as a guilty pleasure for me and ended up just being a pleasure. Should I Stay Or Should I Go may not be the best Clash song, but it's the most accessible and they wouldn't even have a UK Top 10 single to their name without it.

Never heard Sara by Starship or Jacob's Ladder by Huey Lewis and The News before! They are decent soft rock tunes but no 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now' or 'The Power Of Love' respectively.

'Together We Are Beautiful' is a lovely song.
