7th November 1993

It's a second chart-topper of 1993 for The Bee Gees, as the gorgeous ballad For Whom The Bell Tolls becomes their 6th number one, 7th if Robin Gibb's Saved By The Bell is included, in which case they have already had number ones in 4 different decades in my charts. I also bought the album in Florida - cheaper than the UK - on my 3rd Theme Park holiday there. Going to the USA was exciting then - records not out in the UK, TV series like Deep Space 9 and Next Generation way ahead of their UK debut, and some shows never broadcast in the UK.

Jimmy Durante gets his first posthumous top 10 (but not his last), As Time Goes By outdoing the Dooley Wilson original in 1977, The Levellers getting a rare top 10 with the upbeat tribal This Garden, and Captain Hollywood Project leap up a whopping 64 places to 8 with More And More. Janet Jackson adds another top 10 with Again at 9 and Bowie can still do it 21 years on as Miracle Goodnight peaks at 10.

Cilla and Dusty have a 60's-icon duet with Heart & Soul - a shame that wasnt a hit, it's jaunty enough and it was nice to see Cilla off the telly and singing again at 23 in my charts. Wet Wet Wet Shed A Tear at 48, it's a ballad (of course), laid-back (natch) and mildly pleasant actually. James, meanwhile, get Laid at 51. 2 years into their run of quality singles, with no end in site. Elton John has a covers duets album out, and calls on Kiki Dee, old chart-topping chum, to cover True Love of all things. It wasn't bad, it just seemed a little under-whelming for Kiki's comeback chart hit. The original Crosby/Grace Kelly track is good though.

Whitney Houston is Queen Of The Night, one of her better upbeat dance tracks, at 55, Sting returns at 72 with a rather good cover of Demolition Man, surprisingly exciting for Sting's solo career, but not as this was originally a Police album track goodie, and is now title theme for a Wesley Snipes movie of the same name. I think Grace Jones covered this one too, so it's got pedigree. A forgotten goodie as Sting hits 14 years of charting. Neither Sultans Of Ping nor Guru ring a bell, though it's nice Dee C Lee gets a credit 8 years on from See The Day.

I really like Haddaway, I get why you did too at the time, as his music with its synth production is very accessible and a natural progression from synth and dance-orientated music in the early 80s, n

The first single "Through The Years" spent 4 weeks in my chart and peaked at # 11.

My retro chart was started with 1970 year, so it didn't include her 60s big hits. My favourite Cilla single is "Something Tells Me (Something Is Gonna Happen Tonight)" , "Best single of the year" for 1971.

Yes 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' should have been the Christmas #1 and 'More and More' should have made top 10!

I liked Through The Years, it was nice to have her back in the studio! 60's Cilla is my fave era but Something Tells Me was the song she did each week on her TV show, quite catchy.👍

Poor David Arnold & Björk!!!! drama

I know! Deprived of a worthy number one by my beloved Bee Gees on form - 26 years of love is hard to shift 😄Plus side, Bjorks new track with Rosalia is amazing, so there's still a chance she might get that elusive chart-topper. 😇

14th November 1993 2nd Florida chart

It's back on top for Go West as I continue with Theme Park Fortnight, plus the Florida Keys (see songs heard on the radio lower down) and as US radio hits bring a lot of new tracks and re-entries for previous UK hits. Madonna suddenly leaps back up to a new peak of 8 with Rain and Toni Braxton debuts at 9 with Another Sad Love Song. Haddaway, US3, Ace Of Base, Culture Beat, Janet Jackson, Shaggy, Inner Circle, Gabrielle, Robin S, Mariah Carey, Gin Blossoms and 10,000 Maniacs all benefit from returning due to pop radio plays.

New tracks include Dwight Yoakam's country cover of Elvis' Suspicious Minds from a current movie, Honeymoon In Vegas, in at 34, Tears For Fears' Break It Down Again new at at 37, both tracks pretty good and the former should have been a UK single and hit. And errr, that's it for actual new tracks as I'm cut off from what was happening in the UK, no internet in them days!

Its like the end of year itunes voucher effect there used to be when some of the biggest songs of the year re-enter!

And yes for Robin S I prefer 'Luv 4 Luv' to the rather overplayed 'Show Me Love'

Ha! Yes I remember those days 😄It shows how radio influenced my charts - it was either buy them, tape them onto cassette and play them, or radio....😮

21st November 1993

It's the last few days of the Florida holiday, and a few days back in the UK, so the chart is a mix of both scenes with more re-entries, and the Bee Gees return to the top spot for a second week as they appear live on TV doing oldies. Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 1985 number 2 returns to reach the same peak as highest new entry, just ahead of US hit Ooh Child from Dino, a remake of a fairly obscure early 70's goodie. Great song, and a US hit both times.

Hot on Florida pop radio, Blind Melon enter at 6 with No Rain, by this time I was recording stuff off the radio direct onto my radio/cassette recorder, so lots of period goodies I really should post online for nostalgia. Back in the UK, Kate Bush has Moments Of Pleasure in at 7, the usual classy stuff - and who knew there would be nothing much for another 15 years! Soul Asylum also big in Orlando, and leap to 9 with the fab Runaway Train. Meat Loaf finally cracks the top 10 with his Monster hit, 12 years on from Bat Out Of Hell doing it.

The Doobie Brothers, criminally, never had a UK hit with Long Train Runnin' though Bananarama bagged a cover version, which has no doubt helped the remix finally chart and in here at 15 - it's good, the original is better. Lisa Keith, fresh from the US charts, leaps in at 18 with Better Than You, and Lonnie Gordon is also getting airplay there and returns at 25. Bazza Manilow gets the remix treatment too, Could It Be Magic popping in at 40, having gone top 10 in 1979 for me.

Belinda Carlisle is laying down her arms at 50, Mr. Big cover Wild World to lesser effect than many before, Heart ask Will You Be There In The Morning, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince return with a new track, I'm Looking For The One To Be With, at 59, it Feels Like Heaven to Urban Cookie Collective, Terence Trent D'Arby is new at 62 with Let Her Down Easy, ahead of Crowded House's Nails In My Feet, 3 Tony's getting another chart entry, Michael Bolton crooning, Bryan Adams, Sting and Rod Stewart collaborating on a movie dirge, Jodeci and Guns'n'Roses all getting US plugs, and in the UK The Orb and Def Leppard pop in from the charts. One of the biggest ever chart invasions, well over one-third turnover.

I really like that Dobbie Brothers dance remix.

Mr Big have yet another Cat Stevens cover, there's a lot!

Feels Like Heaven is good, reminds me a bit of an updated 90s version of Yazoo - Other Side of Love for some reason lol! I think its the 'da da da' vocal improvision bit in it and the synths.

'All For Love' is a bit cheesy soft rock but I like it!

'I Drove All Night' by Roy Orbison is my favourite version of the song, his voice is great in it, made poignant as he died before it was released.
