Posted March 13, 20232 yr My March album of the month is the wonderful His ‘N’ Hers by Pulp. I thought I would showcase this album this week as Pulp’s bassist, Steve Mackey passed away nearly 2 weeks ago aged just 56 Pulp – His ‘N’ Hers Release: 18 April 1994 UK Chart Peak: 9 His ‘N’ Hers, Pulp’s 4th studio album, was their breakthough release, reaching the top 10 of the UK album chart, their first charting album. For me, this is one of the best early Britpop albums showcasing the acerbic wit of Jarvis Cocker wonderfully. Lets have a look at the singles: 1MDpGCTdJxw Lipgloss Lipgloss was the first release from the album and their first under Island Records. Lipgloss peaked at number 50 and this moderate success convinced the band (which had been going since 1986) not to break up and carry on – and I am so glad they did! The song is about the break up of a relationship with a furl that only needs lipgloss and cigarettes to keep things going. sPGepgWupTw Do You Remember The First Time The second release from the album, this was Pulp’s first top 40 single peaking at 33. Loosely based around Jarvis losing his virginity, the single came with a documentary where celebs of the day spoke about losing theirs too and the memories from the first time. This is my favourite single from the album, gorgeous song. 38by00DGid0 Babies (from the Sisters EP) Babies had quite a convoluted journey on the way to finally becoming Pulp’s first top 20 hit (with a slight remix), peaking at number 19 as part of the wonderful Sisters EP and getting them their first TOTP appearance (Jarvis berating Wet Wet Wet via his inside jacket is still a moment!). Babies was originally released in 1992 and was also on the Gift Recordings album in 1993. The rest of the Sisters EP is amazing and worth further listening – Your Sisters Clothes, Seconds and His’N’Hers are all essential Pulp. Although not my favourite album of 1994 (and what a year that was for classic albums – more to come over the next few months) and not even my favourite Pulp album against the monster that is Dfferent Class, His’N’Hers has such charm and there are some cracking album tracks such as Joyriders, David’s Last Summer, Have You Seen Her Lately? And Pink Glove (which took me way too long to work out)! Here is the Spotify playlist:
March 13, 20232 yr Was just listening to the Sisters EP last night! "Your Sister's clothes" is such a tune- I love "Pink Glove" too- An amazing period for them
March 13, 20232 yr Author Was just listening to the Sisters EP last night! "Your Sister's clothes" is such a tune- I love "Pink Glove" too- An amazing period for them The Sisters EP is a rare thing for me - I love all 4 tracks. Your Sisters Clothes is the best imo even over Babies!
March 13, 20232 yr I can host a listenthrough for this on Tuesday or Wednesday. Which day would be best for you, Jester? I wouldn't want you to miss your own album again.
March 13, 20232 yr Author I can host a listenthrough for this on Tuesday or Wednesday. Which day would be best for you, Jester? I wouldn't want you to miss your own album again. I am away with work for the rest of the week :( is Saturday too late?
March 13, 20232 yr Saturday evening is fine, I hope Dandy, Bre and others will be able to attend that day as well.
March 13, 20232 yr Saturday would be great for me... preferably no earlier than 8 though if that would suit others? ps this album is a great choice, probably my favourite of theirs... a quick rate based upon memory: 09 Joyriders 09 Lipgloss 10 Acrylic Afternoons 09 Have You Seen Her Lately? 09 Babies 10 She's a Lady 07 Happy Endings 10 Do You Remember The First Time? 11 Pink Glove 07 Someone Like the Moon 10 David's Last Summer Will be interesting to see how anyone new to it ranks it compared to those of us who have memories from the time to associate it with
March 13, 20232 yr Great album, not as great as Different Class, but has some amazing songs Babies and Do You Remember the First Time are classics and you gotta love the storytelling in Pink Glove and She's a Lady after revising the album this morning my top 5 would be: 1 Pink Glove 2 Babies 3 Do you remember the first time 4 Acrylic afternoons 5 She's a Lady Edited March 14, 20232 yr by Bjork
March 18, 20232 yr I may be out after all, hadn’t realised it was mother in law day. Probably be back between 8 and 9, any chance we could swap and do Shelby first? I’ve heard both before and am less fussed about hearing Shelby again :kink:
March 18, 20232 yr Although no worries at all if not or if others want Pulp first as I appreciate I can be a tad flaky with my demands for these events and then not turning up or getting distracted by ramen bowl shopping etc (which, if anyone is vaguely interested, my ramen bowls ended up being my favourite things I’ve bought in ages!)
March 18, 20232 yr Yes, I can change the running order so the Shelby Lynne album is first as long as that suits PCF and Jester.
March 18, 20232 yr Author I can’t join if Pulp is second I’m afraid :( I am beholden to early nights for medical reasons I won’t go into! In fact if we could start at 8 it’s even better.
March 18, 20232 yr OK, I will go back to having Pulp first. I will stick with the 8.30 start as an earlier start might catch everyone else out if they turn up at 8.30.
