TV shows can be brilliant ways to discover new music, and teen/young adult shows usually feature a whole host of songs that are right up my street. 2021 saw the release of Ginny & Georgia season 1, and quickly, I fell in love with the show (which followed it up with a huge second season earlier this year). While watching the show, I Shazam'd a track I really liked the sound of, and this is what it turned out to be! I charted Bahari four years earlier when the American duo lent their vocals to Grey's I Miss You, but hadn't heard anything more from them. Savage was remixed to feature rapper BIA, and that's the version I chose to send as I loved her addition to the track. It was a moderate hit in the contest, qualifying for the final and finishing in the bottom half. BIA has since made the UK top 100 with her J. Cole collaboration LONDON, while Bahari have continued to release music regularly, though Savage in various forms still makes up four of their top 5 most popular songs...!

In the years since I sent them to BJSC, Chase Atlantic have become reasonably well known. They sold out three shows at O2 Academy Brixton recently (later moved to Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith) and have had a number of streaming hits, with five songs over 100 million streams. Right Here, while never a single from their Part One EP, remains their seventh most popular track on Spotify currently! It was my 50th entry to the contest, and I chose not to make use of the anniversary entry option (I didn't really have anything I was gagging to send for that). Right Here barely qualified, but it DID qualify and that's what matters! It was the second entry in a run of five qualifiers from the beginning of 2017. I've only paid a little attention to Chase Atlantic, charting one further song from them, but I've heard a handful more over the years.

Another discovery of the josepvinaixa blog, I first found Niykee Heaton through her song Bad Intentions, a slow R&B jam that hit my top 5 at the time. I probably considered sending that to BJSC but it never materialised, but she soared to the top of my potentials list a year later. Cold War is in the same vein as Bad Intentions but moodier and darker, and it does it so well. Cold War also hit #5 in my chart, and to my amazement, became my first semi-final winner. Somehow, this didn't quite translate into the final, finishing 11th (still very respectable of course!), but following my second ever top 10 hit just a month earlier (I was 3 years into my BJSC journey at this point), some sustained success felt amazing. I charted a couple more songs from Niykee later that year but I've not really tracked her since. It would appear a couple of albums have followed, one that includes Bad Intentions but unfortunately Cold War remains absent from digital platforms.

I really thought I was onto something here...! As I said, I don't enter songs with any real expectation, but sometimes, I feel like I've sussed a big BJSC hit, and that's truly what I thought with this one. Fleurie was already on my radar after I discovered her beautiful track Hurts Like Hell in a show called Containment, and one evening, I went to check out a few more of her songs on the hunt for BJSC entries. I discovered this version of her song Breathe, recorded for digital card game Legends of Runeterra, which sounded perfect, and became her second top 10 hit in my chart. Leading my own hype train didn't work, and though Breathe qualified comfortably, its final position didn't match up to my expectations and I've never since blown my own trumpet so much...!!! The song remains a beauty though, and I'm glad I finally sent Fleurie to the contest after considering Hurts Like Hell.

The first artist I ever sent to BJSC, I've revisited Greyson Chance a couple of times in the contest to varying degrees of success. 2021 saw me enter Nobody, the third single from his Trophies EP (and my favourite track from that project). The result was a (very) low final placement (2021, Robin aside, was a very middling year for TARO Bellamia); I'd hoped for something better than that but I was just pleased it had qualified! Greyson is definitely the biggest name to appear thus far and it's no shock he's firmly at the front of my radar, having released a new single Herringbone just last Friday, due to impact my chart this coming week. As to whether I'll ever enter Greyson again, it's probably unlikely now (I did consider him for my 100th entry but nothing stood out as a strong enough entry), but never say never x

It's not often a BJSC discovery just falls into my lap, but this one was an easy find. After appearing in Julie & the Phantoms and joining the regular cast of Good Trouble, Booboo Stewart is naturally someone I follow on Instagram. In addition to acting, he's ventured into music as one half of That band Honey., though I hadn't heard any of their material before. Tattoo was the first one I heard, and immediately I loved the dreamy vibe of the vocals and the strong production. It felt like a great entry, though it became yet another let down in recent times where no hype materialises and TARO Bellamia fall under the radar. Perhaps people like it but just not enough to be in their top 10? Who knows, but Tattoo still sounds brilliant to my ears. I've not been as bothered by other songs by the duo, but I'm definitely interested to hear what's coming.

Though I've sent artists participating in national finals around the time of entry, with different songs (e.g. I sent Oscar Enestad with Sign of My Love a month before he performed I Love It in Melodifestivalen), I've never really sent actual Eurovision rejects to BJSC. This song is the sole exception. One of the artists taking part in Unser Song für Dänemark, Germany's Eurovision selection for 2014, Madeline Juno submitted two songs for the contest - Like Lovers Do and Error. As she was eliminated in round 1, Like Lovers Do was the only one to get a performance, but, though I didn't watch the national final, its underperformance there didn't put me off sending it to BJSC. Like Lovers Do qualified with ease and became a middling hit in the final. In the years since, I've charted another song from Madeline, that I interestingly discovered from our very own Pete's personal chart!

One of my favourite discoveries of 2022 was American singer Knox, whose rock-influenced pop music captured me the second I heard his single Sneakers, the first track from recently released debut EP How to Lose a Girl in 7 Songs. Sneakers kickstarted a run of hits in my chart, with Dumpster Fire being the highest peaking at #2. I might have sent Sneakers had I not already had a couple of entries around the time that came out, but Dumpster Fire came along at the perfect time. It qualified and made the final, though the result wasn't much to write home about but I didn't mind, it was definitely the kind of song where qualifying was an achievement (and in this case, it very much was - it scraped through!).

This collaboration on paper should have been brilliant, and it totally was, but in the middle somewhere, I lost faith in its potential. For context: DREAMDNVR (real name Philip Tillström) is one half of Swedish duo Hearts & Colors, who were behind a song I really enjoyed called LA On a Saturday Night. Boy In Space has cemented himself as one of my favourite artists in just a few years and has been on a non-stop hit spree since I discovered him. However, these two duetted on a song called Amnesia earlier in 2020 and I didn't enjoy it too much. Therefore, my hopes for PSYCHO were low, but I was pleasantly surprised (and I've done a 180 on Amnesia too, I was harsh on it). The production is top notch and Boy In Space in particular delivers quality vocals. It became his second BJSC qualifier (after Caroline, another TARO Bellamia entry), and is one of a huge 20 top 10 hits in my chart for the Swedish singer. DREAMDNVR hasn't charted as a soloist since, but he scored another top 10 later as part of Hearts & Colors.

Just as she appeared to be building up hype, I nabbed British singer/songwriter Lauren Aquilina for a BJSC entry in 2013 with Sinners, the title track and lead single from her second EP. Lee had already sent Fools earlier that year and reached the final, and I was delighted that Sinners did the same, outdoing its predecessor. It remains Lauren's biggest BJSC hit, though 2014's Lovers or Liars became my favourite from Lauren, topping my personal chart. I met Lauren in 2014 at her London show, where I got to hear Sinners live! Though Lauren's hype never quite became anything, she's solidified herself as a songwriter working for artists including Little Mix, Ava Max and Rina Sawayama.

Frans Walfridsson

A contestant on Idol Sverige in 2015, Frans Walfridsson was another discovery of josepvinaixa (or perhaps its Facebook page replacement by the time this song came about, I can't remember!). The potential of his music felt exciting. Debut single Emergency Call was strong, and Tonight, the follow-up was even better. The production felt bang on trend, but his music didn't garner any traction sadly, including in BJSC where Tonight failed to qualify. No other songs were released under Frans' full name, though he released four more singles across 2019 and 2020 as iosef, before turning his hand to producing music.

CXLOE and gnash

Not sure if this might come as a shock or not but the first final top 10 to drop out is one of my biggest hits. I love the success story behind this song, as everything surrounding it seems at odds with its result! Though CXLOE wasn't new to BJSC, I wasn't specifically checking for her when I found this song on a music source, but I peeped it out of curiosity and it was love at first listen. The production is superb and the chorus is super catchy, and I really like gnash's guest verse too. SICK qualified safely, but its result in the semi-final didn't scream winning contender. Despite that, it finished 2nd in the final - my best result ever! Though it's now tied with Isac Elliot's Weekend, SICK came closest to winning, being just FOUR points behind Jadakissnia's winner (compared to Isac finishing 25 points behind). Even after its win, SICK didn't seem particularly revered among BJSC posters, so yay for the silent majority...! As a song, SICK isn't one I go back to as much but when I do, I remember how strong a pop track it is. CXLOE charted again a year later on Cheat Codes' Between Our Hearts, while gnash hasn't charted since, but did chart beforehand with global hit i hate u, i love u.

Yet another from the discovery pool of josepvinaixa, this one took a couple of plays before it really hit me. Canadian singer Shawn Hook had already released a fair bit of music by the time Sound of Your Heart arrived in 2015, which is perhaps why it sounds so polished and slick. I entered it to BJSC in 2016, sailing through the semi final and finishing at a very respectable 15th in the final. I definitely kept an eye on his later releases after sending this, but clearly none captured me much as Sound of Your Heart remains his only hit in my chart. Shawn last released music just last year, though his last chart hit in Canada was back in 2017.

I suppose the best way to play BJSC sometimes is to just send what you're currently loving without any sort of expectation of success. Sometimes, that can work out brilliantly and the song speaks for itself. Other times, it falls flat on its face, and that's what happened with this one. JayXander, real name Jayden Palmer, is an American self-produced artist who I discovered at the end of 2020 with his song HOODIES. Debut EP Toxic Trait Sandwich followed in 2021 and Too Late was my big initial favourite, so I sent it to BJSC. I can't say I had any expectations of success for this one, it's much more typical of my taste these days but not really in line with BJSC en masse, but it did sting when it only mustered up 17 points in its semi final. I'll always have time for it though. Too Late was followed by a #1 hit in Ghost Me, and JayXander recently returned with If We Don't Last, another top 10 hit in my chart.

I've sent a handful of artists more than once over my 100 contests in BJSC, and one of those is Jordan Witzigreuter, known better as The Ready Set. The two songs I've sent are pretty different. While Freakin' Me Out leans more towards pop-rock, Good Enough dips into the tropical house vibe that was popular around the time it came out. I really liked the change in vibe and the track went straight in at #1 in my chart, and I had to line him up for another BJSC entry just three contests after the last one. Good Enough fared even better than Freakin' Me Out, just missing the top 20 in the final. I listened to the parent album of Good Enough (titled I Will Be Nothing Without Your Love) but haven't heard anything by him since, despite regular releases all the way to November 2022. Good Enough is also the lowest placed track to peak at #1 in my chart, though another is just a few songs away...!

She didn't quite set BJSC alight (not with this entry anyway), but Sofía Reyes' debut single marked the start of a notable career in her home country of Mexico. A top 20 hit there and Spain, it led the way for a future top 5 hit in both regions and a global hit in the form of Jason Derulo collaboration 1, 2, 3. Before that, though, I sent the very instant Muévelo to BJSC and it just missed out on qualifying. I was disappointed, it's so catchy and it was just one point off qualifying. To rub salt into the wound, just months later, Beaverdonia sent Sofía's song Conmigo (Rest of Your Life). Conmigo placed 20th in the semi, finishing there on a tiebreak (decided by most 7s !!!) and QUALIFIED due to the number of qualifiers per semi changing in that time. Fuming, even though I love Conmigo too. Salt levels are high. Justice for Muévelo, the qualifier that never was. Either way, it was the first of a run of hits for Sofía, her most recent top 40 hit in my chart being Imanbek and Sean Paul collaboration Dancing on Dangerous in 2021, while she topped the chart in 2019 with her song R.I.P.!
