Posted March 22, 20232 yr Just thinking about if Taylor and Ed might still be relevant in 30 years from now. Of the current crop of big pop stars they have probably proven more than most that they have what it takes to be the ABBA or Fleetwood Mac of today and still be charting - at least successful albums - in 30 years from now. But lasting that long only happens to a few artists. So just to extend it to see who else could be in with a chance of super long-term relevance, I was just wondering who we collectively think is still relevant to the charts today who debuted before 2010, and include the year they first charted to track their longevity. This could include anybody either still having hit singles or hit albums that hang around for longer than one week in the top 10 (or if you can prove they are otherwise relevant in some other way like huge tours not based off the nostalgia circuit etc). Maybe don’t count Christmas songs though, not sure there’s an argument for Burl Ives still being relevant because he’s high on a dominant festive playlist. I’ll start: 1958 - Cliff Richard 1962 - The Beatles 1968 - Fleetwood Mac 1971 - Elton John, Rod Stewart 1974 - ABBA, Queen 1978 - Kate Bush 1980 - Bruce Springsteen 1982 - Wham! 1983 - The Smiths 1984 - George Michael (solo), Madonna 1987 - Metallica 1988 - Kylie Minogue 1990 - Mariah Carey, Red Hot Chili Peppers 1991 - Take That, Manic Street Preachers 1993 - Radiohead 1994 - Oasis 1995 - Foo Fighters 1996 - Robbie Williams 1997 - Steps 1998 - Shania Twain 1999 - Eminem, Britney Spears, Craig David, Blink-182, Muse, Westlife 2000 - P!nk, Sia, Coldplay 2001 - Tiësto, Linkin Park, Gorillaz 2002 - Beyoncé (solo career), David Guetta, Avril Lavigne, Shakira, Biffy Clyro, Pharrell Williams 2003 - Amy Winehouse, Kings Of Leon, Kelly Clarkson 2004 - Maroon 5, The Killers, Bring Me The Horizon, My Chemical Romance, Kasabian 2005 - Arctic Monkeys, Rihanna, James Blunt, Lil Wayne 2006 - Chris Brown, Paolo Nutini, Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy 2007 - Calvin Harris, OneRepublic, Paramore, The Wombats, Foals, Thirty Seconds To Mars 2008 - Miley Cyrus, Adele, Florence + The Machine, Jonas Brothers, The Script, Vampire Weekend 2009 - Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Drake, Ellie Goulding, Selena Gomez (early 2010) - Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj I’ve not deliberately left anyone out, this is just where I got to before opening the floor to additions. There are countless more, and some here are probably debatable too (Maroon 5 have been a few years without a hit now). Edited March 26, 20232 yr by gooddelta
March 22, 20232 yr I guess the likes of Cliff Richard and Rod Stewart if you're including continued albums chart relevance? (but obviously not singles any more) Craig David has continued doing at least moderately well for an impressively long time too, although he's on a downswing again in the last few years.

I think they count yeah. Was also thinking Mariah and George Michael should be in here. There’s Christmas songs boosted by playlists and then eternally relevant icons. Will add all sensible (although that’s maybe subjective) suggestions in. Edited March 22, 20232 yr by gooddelta
March 22, 20232 yr she's definitely not as relevant as before but her latest album made the top 5 and ofc her early hits are still played regularly nowdays - avril lavigne!
March 22, 20232 yr Author Drake and Ellie only narrowly slipped into 2009 but Bieber was a few weeks out. He more or less counts in principle, same with Nicki.
March 22, 20232 yr Selena Gomez's first top 100 hit was in October 2009! (not even with The Scene so no ambiguity there)
March 22, 20232 yr It's so funny looking back at 2008, would anyone imagine 15 years from then that the two acts who'd still be relevant/massive are Adele and Miley Cyrus?
March 22, 20232 yr Umm ...Madonna? Victoria Bdckham too. She could get a hit anytime she wanted
March 22, 20232 yr Kanye West and Justin Timberlake may feature here. I know it’s been a while since Justin dropped a solo project but I do think he’ll always at least have a form of moderate success.
March 22, 20232 yr Hard to strike a balance between acts who have proved they can still get hits in the singles chart - which excludes a few in the list above - and those who can still get high charting albums - which is a much longer list. Blink-182 and My Chemical Romance both had Top 40 singles last year, but they were very frontloaded.
March 22, 20232 yr Avril Lavigne is definitely still relevant, Ellie Goulding is declining however has just had a number one album and likely to have another this year.
March 22, 20232 yr Britney’s involvement in the song gained it a ton of publicity though, its as much a hit for her as it was for Elton really
