1994- All-4-One- I Swear

The first song for this week is: 'I Swear' was the second single from All-4-One's eponymous debut album. This was a cover of the previous year from a country music artist John Michael Montgomery which would peak at #42 in the US. All-4-One's version would go and peak at #2 in the UK, it was #2 for seven straight weeks thanks to the juggernaut that was Wet Wet Wet's 'Love Is All Around'. In ths US this would fare better by peaking at #1 where it stay at #1 for 11 straight weeks.

2000- Mary Mary- Shackles (Praise You)

'Shackles (Praise You) was the debut single from American duo Mary Mary from their debut album 'Thankful'. This would go on and peak at #5 in the UK, in the US this would peak at #28 for them. This would their biggest ever hit to date, as their next single 'I Sings' would peak at #32. Not one I have heard for a while this from Mary Mary. But it's a great song from them.

2013- Bruno Mars- Treasure

'Treasure' was the third single from Bruno Mars' second studio album 'Unorthodox Jukebox'. This would go and peak at #12 in the UK, in the US this would fare better by peaking at #5 in the Billboard Hot 100. I very much preferred this to 'Locked Out of Heaven' which I thought was the worst song that Bruno Mars did.

My Unorthodox Jukebox rankings have swayed a lot since it came out. I used to like Locked Out Of Heaven the most but now I'd actually say When I Was Your Man is my fave. Treasure has always been mid to me.
'Shackles' is such a good feel good anthem and 'Treasure' is fine but I prefer 'When I Was Your Man' & 'Locked Out Of Heaven' to it, although the latter has dipped a little bit thanks to being on the radio quite often still.

1984- The Pointer Sisters- Jump (For My Love)

The first song for this week is: 'Jump (For My Love) which was the third single from The Pointer Sisters tenth studio album 'Break Out'. This would go and peak at #6 in the UK, in the US this would fare better by peaking at #3 in the Billboard Hot 100. Nineteen years on this would be covered by Girls Aloud as part of the soundtrack to 'Love Actually' their version would fare better in the UK by peaking at #2. Out of the two, I think they are on equal terms.

1999- Jennifer Lopez- If You Had My Love

'If You Had My Love' was the debut single from Jennifer Lopez from her debut studio album 'On The 6'. This would go on and peak at #4 in the UK, in the US this would fare better and peak at #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 where it would stay at #1 for five weeks. I would say this is a great debut single from J-Lo who has gone on to produce some R&B classics throughout the years. The music video centered around an internet concept with someone clicking onto her website.

2002- Ja Rule ft Case- Livin' It Up

'Livin' It Up' was the lead single from US rapper Ja Rule's third studio album 'Pain Is Love' this would feature Case. This would go on and peak at #5 in the UK, in the US this would peak at #6. This would sample Stevie Wonder's 'Do I Do'. This is quite a good song from Ja Rule, I would say. I do listen to this quite a lot, it's one that would be on the playlists for me.

1987- Hot Chocolate- You Sexy Thing

Remix:

Original

'You Sexy Thing' was the second single from Hot Chocolate's second album 'Hot Chocolate'. This song was first released in 1975 where it would peak at #2 in the UK and #3 in the US. In 1987 this remixed version of this would peak at #10 in the UK. Ten years later this again would be re-released thanks to it being featured in The Full Monty where it would peak at #6. It is the only song to enter the UK Top 10 in the 70s, 80s and 90s. This is a great song from Hot Chocolate, a song I wouldn't tire of. Again I remember this band very well from my childhood as on a Friday night it would be tradition for my Dad to play this CD, Great talent was Errol Brown who is very much missed.

2008- Chris Brown- Forever

I apologize the next song won't be popular but it is 'Forever' which was the lead single of Chris Brown's reissued version of his second studio album 'Exclusive' which was titled the Forever Edition. This would go and peak at #4 in the UK which at the time was his second highest charting solo single. In the US this would fare better by peaking at #2 in the Billboard Hot 100. This is probably one of my favourite songs from Chris Brown, I couldn't tire of listening to this. This was played a lot during what was the summer of 2008.

2011- Black Eyed Peas- Don't Stop The Party

'Don't Stop The Party' was the third single from Black Eyed Pea's sixth studio album 'The Beginning'. This would go and peak at #17 in the UK to date this was the Black Eyed Peas last UK Top 40 hit, in the US this would be their lowest charting single by peaking at #86 in the Billboard Hot 100. The album version of this seems to go on forever, it isn't really that memorable from them, I think this is the first I've heard this in years.

Hot Chocolate have better but 'You Sexy Thing' is rather iconic.

I still enjoy 'Forever' as a song regardless. His 08/09 singles for the most part were on a good streak!

and 'Don't Stop The Party' is a tune but is fairly forgotten nowadays I feel.

Don't Stop The Party indeed remains BEP's most recent entry in the UK top 40. A very "of it's time" song.

In the US this would fare better by peaking at #1 in the Billboard Hot 100. Very recently this was used in EastEnders as part of the much-anticipated comeback that was of one Cindy Beale.

2010- Eminem- Not Afraid

'Not Afraid' was the lead single from Eminem's seventh studio album 'Recovery'. This would go on and peak at #5 in the UK, in the US this would fare better and peak at #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 which would become his 3rd US #1. This was a great lead single from Eminem. I remember this being released just before I had my GCSE exams, I think this was one that I listened to when I was revising. This would come 65th in my Hip Hop songs of the 2010s.

2011- Pitbull ft Marc Anthony- Rain Over Me

'Rain Over Me' was the third single from rapper Pitbull's sixth studio album 'Planet Pit' this would feature former Mr J-Lo, Marc Anthony. This would go on and peak at #28 in the UK, in the US this would peak at #30. I can remember that this was considered a flop from Pitbull at the time given the success that was 'Give Me Everything'. This does sound like something that would be a 16/1 shot in the betting market in Eurovision with a solid each-way chance to win it. Regarding that flop you can read all about it on here:

'Don't Go' such a classic. Wretch 32 featured on D Block Europe's 'Don't Go' on their Home Alone 2 project in 2021, which was a sort of nod/homage to different generations of UK urban music that I loved to see.
