This is the official streaming services thread, the go-to topic for the discussion of playlists and charts from services such as Spotify, Apple & Amazon!

FAQs

What is streaming? What are the chart rules regarding streaming?

For streaming and chart rules related FAQs read this thread.

How many streams equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread.

How much does streaming contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole. Spotify counts for at least half of this, with Apple Music and Amazon also big contributors. YouTube is also big however most of YouTube's streams are at the free tier so won't count for as much.

Why is my fave not doing well?

Is it being promoted on a major curated playlist, and/or going viral on TikTok? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists on Spotify from a UK standpoint. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist. Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped releases, such as the recent album impacts from Drake and Taylor Swift.

Spotify

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. For the full top 200, use the link below to go to Spotify's website. You can also use the Kworb website which displays the data in an easier to read format and also contains additional information, however this is often out of date.

Spotify App [top 50]

Spotify Website [top 200]

Kworb [top 200 and extra data]

What are the most influential Spotify playlists?

Links to Spotify's top playlists are as below.

How often does the Spotify chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although on occasion there will be a delay.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Apple Music

How do I see today's Apple Music chart?

You can use the link below to view the Apple Music top 100 through Kworb. If you have Apple Music, you can also view the top 200 by going to the Charts section and clicking on See All in the Top Songs section.

Kworb [top 100]

What are the most influential Apple Music playlists?

Links to Apple Music's top playlists are as below.

How often does the Apple Music chart update?

It like iTunes updates on a regular basis a number of times a day. No streaming figures are provided however, unlike Spotify.

Amazon

How do I see today's Amazon Music chart?

You can use the link below to view the Amazon Music chart.

Amazon Music

How often does the Amazon Music chart update?

It like iTunes updates on a regular basis a number of times a day. No streaming figures are provided however, unlike Spotify.

Excuse my ignorance but who is Davido? Making quite an impression on Apple Music
He's an afrobeats artist, one of the biggest names in the genre but it's been 3 years since his last album and the genre as a whole has blown up a lot more since then. I think Apple promotes afrobeats a lot more than Spotify does but very intrigued to see if he can chart multiple songs on Spotify too.
It only really 'bothered' - I'd say confused more than bothered - me with Rina (and MUNA to a much lesser extent) because discussion of her as if she is or is about to be some mainstream chart star / huge name has been so prevalent despite being entirely baseless for pretty much her entire career (and not only on here), even to the point where people seemed constantly disappointed at her continuing to not chart her singles as if there was ever any reasonable expectation that she would. It just seems to me like some of her fans would be a lot better off just enjoying the music for what it is and not being so bothered by the lack of chart validation. If she was a formerly big name who stopped having hits I'd understand that more, but she's literally never had a hit (apart from the Charli feature ofc but I'm not convinced that song made any difference to her career / name recognition as a whole rather than just being a one off viral hit because of people recognising the sample) so it always slightly baffled me where that discourse came from.

(obviously not saying all or even most of her fans are like this, just enough of them that it was noticeable in a way that I have not noticed with similar artists with cult fanbases but no chart presence)

It's definitely an interesting echo chamber effect. Usually (but is not limited to) a result of spending too long on any of the triumvirate of r/...heads subreddits that one equates a small community with the bigger picture. When of course we have a bigger picture and it's published every Friday afternoon. Absolute shock that DJ Khaled is more popular than JID etc. I literally compile a fake music chart every week with like half a dozen friends and so need to constantly remind myself that no, the average person on the street has not heard of Magdalena Bay or think's they're the bee's knees.

Relevant anecdote about Rina that is extremely Australian in content so read at your own peril:

Every year we have the triple j Hottest 100 which generates a lot of speculation in the lead up as to what gets in/places where etc. There had been similar efforts done before but predicting the full list got a lot of mainstream attention when one guy wrote a script to count every vote posted on social media, producing a roughly ~4% sample that proved *very* accurate in projecting the whole thing. This has continued ever since though with less votes on social media and that particular sample being less representative, it's not as accurate as it once was. Rina in fact set a new record when "XS" was projected to land at #82 but in reality missed the entire top 200. It meant an entire broadcast of copium inhalation as it was assumed she had to be in there somewhere but you have to imagine it's a case where not many people voted her, but everyone who did, posted it online (It's me, hi, I'm one of the people who did this). So if nothing else, there's a case where at least briefly there was quantified evidence that she appeared to be in the mix of popularity.

Mind you her album charted reasonably well at least.

But it's why the charts have so much value because they can settle that score/debate, at least to an extent. Yes, so and so artist is being helped by playlists, algorithms, label tomfoolery etc, but so is basically everyone to an extent. At the end of the day, a stream is a stream, a sale is a sale, and an artist can be very popular even if they don't have a contingent online talking about it, and vice versa.

I don't care for Ed or not, really, but no one can say this is not a BOMB. Today's update -

Spotify (March 31|Day 8)

Global #47 (-19) 2,280,337(-163,844)

US #122 (-60):rip: 395,994(-77,445)

Of course his play-listing on Spotify are amazing so no complain over there.

It’s looking good for official #1 this week! :yahoo:

As much as I like Ed's music and think he's done nothing wrong in his release strategy to get this somg to No.1, he's features on 15 Top 100 songs over 2021/2022, and that really is over-saturation.

Eyes Closed is "just another Ed Sheeran song" rather than the event it could have been if released in 12 months time after a period of quiet.

I’m starting to think there’s something with autoplay coming into effect for a song’s 2nd week - iirc all of the two above examples, You Only Love Me, Heaven, Die For You etc all had their ‘autoplay boost’ on their 2nd week of release. (And to add to this trend, potentially Labour and Heart Attack - Rock Version could be being boosted by it this week?)
