'When I Said Goodbye' not one of my fave Steps songs or singles, but I wouldn't rank it as one of their worst either, Back then it was basically an obligation for every pop act to release at least one ballad per album campaign & from their 2nd album 'Steptacular' this was probably the best choice or maybe 'Since You Took Your Love Away'. But this one is beautifully arranged & does give them a mature sound.

Having this released as a double a-side along with 'Summer of Love' was the smart choice though, as I doubt this would have done half as well without it. I remember this being showcased on their 'Next Step Live' tour, before 'Steptacular' was released along with 'Deeper Shade of Blue' & knew that these 2 would end up being singles. 'I Think It's Love' & 'Since You Took Your Love Away' were also on there, but they were solos.

I totally get what you are saying Nina. For now it doesn’t do anything for me as a song. Especially the way H sings his part..I agree that it was a smart move to include the far superior Summer! I hoped it wouldn’t be a single though the signs were there indeed.

I used to dislike 'When I Said Goodbye', but these days I kinda like it!

I don't hate when I said goodbye but don't listen to it, there slow songs don't generally do much for me.

Step one was a lovely debut. There’s actually one song that I don’t enjoy, this one..the main reasons I skip this song? The lyrics (too cheesy) and H’s part. I’m not here to shade H, it’s just his way of singing that gets me in a lot of songs..
