Biography

David Guetta

From his early days playing Chicago house in French discotheques to his long reign atop the pop charts, David Guetta has revolutionised dance music multiple times. Born in Paris in 1967, Guetta began DJing in the late ’80s, when the shimmery sound known as the “French touch” was taking shape. By the early 2000s, at his F*** Me I’m Famous parties in Ibiza, he had translated that melodic style into a clever merger of pop sass and club swagger. He parlayed that mix into pure platinum with hits like 2003’s “Just for One Day”, an energy-stoking rework of David Bowie’s “Heroes”, and 2002’s “Just a Little More Love”, a sultry bump-and-grind featuring R&B singer Chris Willis. That versatility—along with a knack for killer hooks—would become one of Guetta’s principal calling cards, and as EDM exploded across pop culture at the end of the 2000s, Guetta’s shapeshifting style led the way, yielding ecstatic affirmations (“When Love Takes Over”), feisty come-ons (“Sexy Bitch”) and unstoppable singalongs (The Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling”, which Guetta produced). Since then, his collaborations (Sia, Nicki Minaj) have kept listeners guessing even as his choruses—triumphant as a bottle of bubbly blowing its top—have proven one of pop’s most dependable pleasures. - Apple Music

Bebe Rexha

What do pop-punk pin-up Pete Wentz, rap diva Nicki Minaj, Top 40 queen Selena Gomez, and country hitmakers Florida Georgia Line have in common? They’ve all been drawn into the orbit of singer/songwriter Bebe Rexha. Born in 1989, the Brooklyn native has left her fingerprints all over the modern musical landscape through her high-profile songwriting credits, her many genre-hopping collaborations, and her own brutally frank yet undeniably effervescent dance-pop bops. It was Wentz who first spotted Rexha’s potential, when the Fall Out Boy founder invited her to bring her sassy vocals to his short-lived electro side project Black Cards in 2011. After striking out on her own, Rexha initially found success as a writer for the likes of Gomez (“Like a Champion”) and Eminem (“The Monster”), and as a guest singer on David Guetta’s 2015 Top 10 clap-happy banger, “Hey Mama”, providing a chorus hook almost towering enough to overshadow Minaj. But since releasing her own debut EP, I Don’t Wanna Grow Up, that same year, Rexha has applied her pop smarts to songs that are unafraid to dredge up all sorts of messy emotions. Never shy about quoting her therapist in song, Rexha lays her mental-health struggles bare on singles like “I’m Gonna Show You Crazy” and “I’m a Mess”, translating self-loathing into unapologetic anthems. But her 2017 honky-trap hoedown with Florida Georgia Line on “Meant to Be” showcased a sweeter side, cementing Rexha’s crossover appeal to club kids and heartland romantics alike. - Apple Music

Biography

Solána Rowe had a weird time growing up. Jersey suburbs, orthodox Muslim household, parents working their way through corporate America, wanted to fit in, couldn’t. She got bullied for wearing a hijab after 9/11 and became the kind of teenager who, on at least one occasion, drew the cops into a chase while joyriding in the family car. “[My parents] were only strict because they were reasonable,” she told Apple Music in 2017. “Like, they’re black, they come from the South and Midwest, they don’t come from anything…they’re not tryna take a gang of risks.” That Rowe had her own ideas about how to live didn’t help. “I rebelled really hard, and I learned everything the hard way,” she said. “I’m very hard-headed, very curious.” It’s a balance—rebellious but insecure, expressive but self-conscious, dreamy but alert—that has made Rowe resonant, but also an anomaly, the kind of artist who doesn’t ignore her quirks or contradictions, but brings them to the table in all their messy human glory. After self-releasing a couple of EPs in her early twenties (she took her name from the Nation of Islam’s Supreme Alphabet—Savior Zig-Zag Allah), she became the first female artist signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, joining future collaborators Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock. Released in 2017, her debut album, Ctrl, put her at the vanguard of contemporary R&B, mixing the expressivity of classic soul with a hazy, synth-heavy atmosphere and a playful sense of lyricism that brought Rowe’s inner monologue out. “Even with the heels and tighter clothes and other things, I’m still just me,” she said. “I still have a lot of anxiety about the world, and my thoughts and what people think about my thoughts.” - Apple Music

Biography

Miguel’s sound evolves every time he encounters a new way to express love—and as one of pop’s friskiest experimentalists, that means his career is a study in subverting the very notion of a conventional R&B star. The singer/songwriter born Miguel Jontel Pimentel (Los Angeles, 1985) was drawn to music’s insider/outsiders from the beginning, mimicking the moves of Michael Jackson at family gatherings at age three, and later drawing both artistic and sartorial inspiration from the likes of David Bowie, Prince, and Jimi Hendrix. So when it came time for his 2010 debut, All I Want Is You, Miguel flouted tradition by moving elegantly, sexily, both within and beyond his assigned genre. In back-to-back tracks, he slid from boom-bap soul to vulnerable a cappella to uptempo electro-funk. His confidence found composure on 2012’s Kaleidoscope Dream, which sounds as Technicolor and wondrous as the title suggests. Single “Adorn” merged timeless soul and modern production as seamlessly as it did deep love and physical longing, while songs like “P**** Is Mine” flipped expectations by casting Miguel as one of his partner’s many lovers, begging for validation. On 2015’s Wildheart, he dove deeper into psych rock, incorporating his own guitar and a Lenny Kravitz cameo into raw, grinding cuts that also supported Kurupt rapping and Miguel singing in Spanish. By 2017’s War & Leisure, he seemed to be flitting across genres just to prove he could: The sunny, pop-adjacent “Pineapple Skies” fit him just as snugly as the trippy, Travis Scott-assisted “Sky Walker.” That latter track seems to best capture the man as he coos out lyrical flexes both winkingly self-aware and genuinely braggy. Chameleon though he may be, Miguel is always Miguel—humorous, smart, and full of passion—no matter the setting. - Apple Music

Ayra Starr is impossible to ignore. Born in Benin Republic, the 20-year-old was raised between its beach city, Cotonou and the cultural hub of Lagos, Nigeria. This mix of cultures inspires her global approach to music, art and life. She's inspired by the regal earthiness of Angelique Kidjo, Rihanna's feisty confidence, as well as 90s fashion icons. Ayra describes her sound as Afrosoul, told in an intoxicating voice that evokes a Gen Z queen-in-waiting. Drawing from influences like classic Yoruba and Beninese music & artists like 2Face and Wande Coal, her music speaks for a generation of girls around the world who are finding themselves, united by angst and emojis. She announced herself to the world on January 22 with an eponymous 5-track EP, which produced the No. 1 single, “Away” and spurred viral moments in the UK as well. But Ayra Starr’s moment will come month’s after after releasing her debut studio album- 19 & Dangerous which had multiple number 1s, unprecedented cosigns, and organic virality. ‘Rush’ is one of 2022’s biggest summer hit. Biography

Even before she dropped her debut single in 2014, Meghan Trainor already had it made. By that point, the 20-year-old Nantucket native had achieved the dream of many aspiring singer/songwriters: to infiltrate the inner sanctum of Nashville’s Music Row. But as it turns out, co-writing songs for country stars like Rascal Flatts and Hunter Hayes was the warm-up for what came next. Upon its release in the summer of 2014, Trainor’s first solo single, “All About That Bass,” swiftly became the most inescapable pop earworm of the year, thanks to a rump-shaking, retro-R&B sound that filled the void vacated by the late Amy Winehouse and a then-dormant Adele. But not only did the song transform Trainor into an instant, cross-generational pop star, its celebration of plus-size physiques made her a spokesmodel for body positivity at a time when there were few such role models in the entertainment industry. (And that motivational ethos would make her a natural choice to judge singing-competition shows like The Voice UK.) With the release of the full-length Title in 2015, Trainor became just the 13th woman in pop history to have both her first single and first album go to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, but on the follow-up, Thank You, she proved she was no mere throwback artist, as singles like “Me Too” and “No” updated her old-school aesthetic for modern-day dance floors. And on 2020’s Treat Myself, she further immersed herself in contemporary club sounds, applying her Aretha-sized sass to the synth-pumped thump of “No Excuses” and EDM-washed “Wave.” But even as her muse has drifted from Motown to Minaj (who turns up on the ASMR&B duet “Nice to Meet Ya”), Trainor’s self-help mission remains on course. “Every message that I give when I’m writing songs, it’s all to me,” she told Apple Music, where she also hosts Dirty Pop Radio. “I keep listening to these songs and I keep having to remind myself, ‘baby girl, love yourself.’” Trainor’s ongoing success lies in her ability to find new and creative ways to translate those personal affirmations into communal anthems. - Apple Music

Biography

As a singer, rapper, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, there’s little that the not-so-easily defined Labrinth can’t do, musically speaking. Born Timothy Lee McKenzie in London in 1989, the multitalented musician hit his stride when, after a couple years of guest spots, production credits, and a remix of Gorillaz’s “Stylo” to his credit, he was noticed by Simon Cowell. The American Idol and The X Factor judge was so impressed that Labrinth became the first act in six years to sign to Cowell’s multimedia entertainment company without competing on a talent show. Labrinth made his debut with 2012’s Electronic Earth, a bold pop record with its sights set on futuristic sounds but also embracing the genre’s history through funky moments like the explosive “Express Yourself,” which references the namesake ‘70s classic. He’s been a frequent collaborator since the beginning of his career, appearing on singles by acts like Tinie Tempah and The Weeknd (the dance-floor-ready “Losers”), producing for Ed Sheeran and Noah Cyrus, teaming up with Sia and Diplo to create the supergroup LSD, and writing music for the hit, Zendaya-starring HBO show, Euphoria. In 2019, he released a second full-length, Imagination & the Misfit Kid, a kaleidoscopic offering that combines pop, soul, funk, psychedelia, and more in idiosyncratic harmony. - Apple Music
