We also had Madonna, Whitney, Shania, Celine, Mariah and many others getting hit after hit after hit in the late 90s/early 00s when they were all pushing on 40 or older than that.

Hmmm... No.

Except Madonna none of them was "pushing 40". :manson:

In 1998 Mariah Carey was 29. Shania Twain was 33. Whitney Houston was 35. Celine Dion was 30.

Compare that with Cher being 52 years old.

Mariah’s Touch My Body peaked at #5 when she was 39. Whitney had a top 10 hit with Million Dollar Bill in 2009 at 46. Shania debuting in her mid-30s and being so successful was a rarity!

Queen Diana Ross getting to #9 in 1999 with ‘Not Over You Yet’ and #2 with ‘When You Tell Me That You Love Me’ in 2005 with Westlife at 61 years old.

But I’m not sure what any relevance who did/didn’t have hits at whatever age - just Kylie being battered down for a 2023 achievement.

Anyone that has achieved it should be celebrated.

Thanks hun

I dont suppose you know the last solo song by a female over the age of 50?

Thanks hun

It would definitely have been Celebration.

Kylie rising again! :w00t:

Well said hun

Not sure why people are trying to discredit Kylies amazing achievement. A mature woman over the age of 50 getting a top 10 hit... last time it seems that may have happened was in 2005. What does that tell you? Sexism and ageism is an issue in the music industry.

Just Carol Honey ❤️

Mariah’s Touch My Body peaked at #5 when she was 39. Whitney had a top 10 hit with Million Dollar Bill in 2009 at 46. Shania debuting in her mid-30s and being so successful was a rarity!

So it's quite possible that since 2009 (Madonna with Celebration at 51, Whitney with MDB at 46) we've not only not had a new Top 10 single from a 50+ female singer, but even from a 45+ one.

What an achievement this will be for not only Kylie hun but mature women

It is a disgrace how the music industry treats mature women. An absolute disgrace.

Tina Turner also got a #10 hit with When the Heartache is Over in 1999 when she was 60! Let’s hope Padam Padam has a similar effect for older female artists nowadays as Believe did back then

Good climb in streams for Kylie there, even if only one place. The Friday party playlists should help again too later in the week.
Believe became a signature song (or one of them) for Cher - it was a gigantic smash and she sold albums, tours and even subsequent singles based on that one song alone.

It wasn't "easy" for Cher to get that hit, because it is not "easy" to get that type of hit even if you are Taylor Swift in 2023.

You don't always have to take everything so literally. I said it was easier for an act of Cher's type to achieve that in the 90s because it was due to the ground being more fertile than it is in the current era. That's all.

I wouldn't even be needing to wade into the discussion if it wasn't for the serial hot taker piping up.

New Peak:

24. Kylie Minogue- Padam Padam

33. Kali- Area Codes

38. Jonas Brothers- Waffle House

45. Nathan Dawe, Joel Corry, Ella Henderson- 0800 HEAVEN

70. Bou, Slay- Closer

139. D.O.D- So Much In Love

143. Tom Grennan- How Does It Feel

Re-Entries:

155. Harry Styles- Little Freak

191. Lizzo- About Damn Time

195. Bryan Adams- Summer of '69

196. Davido, Musa Keys- UNAVAILABLE

200. Journey- Don't Stop Believin'

You don't always have to take everything so literally. I said it was easier for an act of Cher's type to achieve that in the 90s because it was due to the ground being more fertile than it is in the current era. That's all.

No. It certainly wasn't easier. You are still discrediting & downplaying Cher's colossal achievement.

By the way, where are the examples of female artists over 50 that were playlisted by Radio 1 (and MTV) in the 90's? Have you not found them?

Edited by Voodoo

You are talking absolute codswallop here and you know it. In the 90s it was way easier for an older artist to break into the charts. Not that Cher's achievement wasn't monumental, but radio were more receptive towards playlisting and supporting an older artist compared to the climate we're in now where it's almost impossible to get that level of support (just look at the Radio 1 playlists back then for example).

Exactly - in the same time frame you had Diana Ross (55) scoring a #9 single with Not Over You Yet and Tina Turner (60) scoring a #10 single; mind you, neither had impressive chart runs, but it could be done in the days when week one meant more. Padam Padam is an outlier today in the sense that it's clearly a crossover hit that's reached beyond her usual audience, and yes, the same situation with Cher's Believe.

It's also weird to compare the chart runs to a time when you had weeks of building up to the single release too and the most pirating people did was recording it off the radio to a cassette.

Exactly - in the same time frame you had Diana Ross (55) scoring a #9 single with Not Over You Yet and Tina Turner (60) scoring a #10 single;

Both of those singles were released *after* Believe's massive success astonished the music industry. There was an influx of "old" singers that tried to emulate Cher's success. They tried to replicate her new sound. Tina's and Diana's record labels even recruited Believe's producers. Even Kylie used them for her comeback album.

Everyone wanted to make a comeback like Cher. I doubt Kylie would have gotten her Parlophone deal if it wasn't for Cher's success.

Edited by Voodoo

And before Believe you had Aretha’s ‘A Deeper Love’ peaking at #5 in 1994 when she was 52. Tina and Diana were scoring top 20 hits consistently in the 90s, it’s not like nowadays where there’s just a total absence of older women on the charts
No one was putting down Cher's success with Believe, we were just saying in 2023 Kylie having this moment is the closest comparison.
