Random question ! Was just thinking about it this morning… i get that it wasn’t the blockbuster Fever was, but it did decent and sold decent - they could’ve squeezed one more single out it, no?! Those were the days when a Kylie single would’ve definitely been playlisted by R1 and gone uk top ten = few more BL sales.

So what’s your thoughts on this?

My only guess is that Kylie had moved on to the next thing - working w scissor sisters, prepping for the 2005 tour and working on the GH.

Because it didn't do as well as they expected it to. While the chart positions might look good today, I remember a lot of nervousness around of Chocolate would perform. I also don't think it helped the album much to justify further singles.

I'm sure Jay has a more indepth analysis.

I think they wrapped up the era quickly after 'Chocolate' didn't do anything to revive the album's fortunes and then went full throttle into preparing for Ultimate Kylie.

I was rather gutted 'Secret' didn't get its time to shine though.

I think by the time "Chocolate" was released, they decided to scrap the album and do a GH which results in Ultimate Kylie and Showgirl tour.
They wanted to ensure there was enough gap between Chocolate and I Believe In You.
I'd be interested to know if plans for I Believe in You/Ultimate Kylie were in place or being formulated towards the late stage of the BL era, or if it was something decided as a panic option in mid-2004?

I mean, there were talks in August 2004 about her recording new material:

I think it was a panic release. I sort of remember how nervous everyone seemed about how Chocolate would do and while the peak position (#6) doesn't look terrible, it bombed to #18 in the second week and did very little for the album. I assume they put Kylie back in the studio when it was obvious that Chocolate wasn't going to turn her fortunes around and the tracks that came out just wouldn't fit into a Body Language re-release.

BL re-release? Seriously?

A 4th single would have done nothing for the album after the previous 2 didn’t propel it to greater heights - I can’t imagine single 4 achieving anything better than a 10-24-36 kinda chart run.

Momentum seemed to quickly run out for BL - expectations were sky high and whilst it sold really well, the fact it missed the Top 5 was a disaster back then, plus ‘Slow’ almost seemed like a non-entity, yes it was a #1 but disappeared as quickly as it came (however in later years it’s found it’s place in Kylie’s shows and is generally loved).

To the second single's credit, it did shoot the album back to Top 20 but yeah, after Fever, people didn't expect Kylie to take a left-of-centre turn for her follow-up.

I love BL, but objectively speaking it does kind of sound like an album of demos. I don't know if that's a testament to how they might have rushed it to capitalise on Fever.

THIS.

Seemed like such a wasted opportunity overall. Choice of songs and promo were also weird - like performing after Dark at one of the TOTPs. Save for the 3 singles, I don’t even think there was any other song that deserved to be a single. Wonder how the same team that came up with a solid consistent album like Fever followed it up so badly with what seemed a eish assembly of a random set of songs

I disagree about the 3 singles - secret take you home should have been a single instead of chocolate. It’s a standout track on the album and god knows why it was overlooked.

Whilst I'm inclined to agree, 'Chocolate' gave us one of her best music videos ever.

I can see why they went with Chocolate to be honest - they'd already done two uptempo singles and probably wanted to show off a different side to the album, so it made sense, especially since the first two singles didn't shift the quantities of the album they expected.
I loved ‘Chocolate’, it is a very classy song and I totally see it being a single (and it was!). And I agree, the video was ace. I think this package is one of the brightest memories of 2004 to me. And hey, it still got to 6. :D and had 5 weeks top-40, which wasn’t bad at all for 2004.
Chocolate is great but it was clear interest in the material from BL wasn't huge and they knew it was time to move on. Creatively BL.waa different for kylie but it was the wrong move at that time and instead should have capitalised more on the back of fever.

The video was great until a bunch of dancers danced on the weirdest hairstyle Kylie's ever had.

The ballet choreography was great though, I dislike the radio edit version.

Chocolate never clicked with me until I went to showgirl and it really stayed in my head after it's my fave song from BL.
