I recognised the artist’s name Call Me Loop from previous trawls through New Music Friday, and as soon as her song came up this time, the clean production jumped out of the speakers enough to convince me to go with it. Only later I realised that she had been entered to BJSC five times before, with best finishes of 5th and 7th in 2020 and 2018 - fortunately she passed veto. The lyrical premise is essentially the same as for Rita Ora - Let You Love Me. Another NMF discovery, the hooks of this hit me before I’d registered THAT 10-word title, and it had an endearing DIY aesthetic with a semblance of a message beneath the cascade of self-played synths. If I could make vaguely marketable music, I’d aspire that it wouldn’t sound a million miles from this. LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER appear to be a one-man operation and the song came with a fittingly low-budget music video. July 11, 20232 yr Author BJSC 153 beNfVKPArP4 Lanterns On The Lake - The Likes Of Us My third entry was another NMF discovery, the comeback single from alt-rock band Lanterns On The Lake who, unbeknown to me at the time, had been nominated for the 2020 Mercury Prize. Within a couple of listens I was floored by the defiant build through the pre-choruses to the climatic chorus, with brooding guitar backing and Florence-like vocal delivery backing up the song’s message. Result: DNQ (SF2: 26th, 40) My first DNQ had to happen sometime, but this came as a surprise to me since the song had been well-received in the semi listen-through. Perhaps the semi wasn’t well suited to the song, although maybe the tune didn’t quite have that extra spark to appeal to a wider audience, which I would say is the one shortcoming of the band’s subsequent singles too. I still feel that it could have qualified in different circumstances, and gave it a 4-week run at #2 on my personal chart. I had been drawn to Norwegian producer MRD’s song Midsommar which infused deep male vocals with technicolour synth and guitar riffs after it had appeared in a few personal charts. However it was Bré’s new music playlist which led me to check out the other songs on the same EP, and this the final track burst to my attention with layers of multiple synth riffs and a danceable production - it just seemed to have single potential. On the day I submitted the entry, I realised a video had been uploaded which also reduced the song down to less than 4 minutes, which I thought wouldn’t harm its crossover appeal. The title track from 26 year-old New York singer-songwriter Samia's second album, it starts gently then gradually pushes up the intensity, fuelled by an absolute earworm of a chorus.

Maybe the pop-leaning indie fell too far between two stools, or was the wrong choice for this contest with its subtle charm out of place alongside the multiple off-the-wall bangers which opened semi 2, or maybe the song just wasn't strong enough. Well I liked it anyway, and gave it a week at #1 on my personal chart. I didn't particularly rate ACRAZE's remake of the Cherish hit, but this cover of Rockell's late 90s song is much more my sort of thing with the smooth vocals and trancey production. At least this one qualified and actually got a reasonable number of voters in the final, but a basement finish on 60 points - fewer than the number who voted altogether, and a record low for BJSC finals this year - tells its own story. It appears this had just enough novelty value to muster its way through the semi before its support evaporated somewhat. Still, nothing ventured and all that, though perhaps #3 in my personal chart does a disservice to many other songs in that chart, some of which could have taken its place here if I'd decided to stick with a more established artist after ACRAZE did so well. On a positive note, points being given to and received from each other ever-present BJSC nation in 2023 is still possible, with one nation remaining on either side!
