A return to qualification led to receipt of an 18 point score in a record fifth final appearance in a row (albeit broken by the DNQ), which at the time took me to 4th on the scoreboard with 14 votes revealed. That was as good as it got however, and a sum total of just 22(!) points from the last 38 voters (49 points was the next lowest total any finalist had from these voters combined) meant a slump all the way out of the top 30, the first time I've gone three contests without finishing there, and in the last 10 contests, aside from the two top 5 finishes, none have been in the top two thirds of the scoreboard, with the next highest being 29th. Must do better!

Plenty to cheer this time, via what turned out to be second place in the semi final with a triple figure score! A return to the top 20 in the final, which itself brought a return to the top 20 in the YTD standings, was powered by a haul of seven medals (the most of any Bronzil entry bar MRD with eight), with receipt of an 18 point score for a sixth final appearance in a row. Happy to have something of a cult favourite in this edition, which ended with six of the 11 places above me taken by songs I voted for too.

We back we go back to 1973 for my oldest entry so far, also the second artist I've sent who has had a UK #1 - that came 8 years later, by which time their influence on the new wave musical landscape was inescapable, and the genius of Brian Eno continued to be heard as a producer. This dance craze satire with its punk-predating ethos of rejecting what's gone before came on shuffle for me a few weeks ago, and I had an epiphany to send it here!

Well I lasted 28 contests of competing in BJSC without getting a disgraceful result, but the double whammy arrived of going from second in the semi of the previous contest to second last in this one - my first time in the bottom four of any semi - and taking 20 points off my previous lowest semi points total of 35. I can hardly blame the semi draw either as it looked favourable, but I can't have any regrets about sending it - the song is a key part of Roxy Music's early influence (only this week, I heard on a Sex Pistols documentary that "The Strand" was one of their former names, taken from it), but translating that to this contest was in hindsight a hard sell. It leaves me with a mountain to climb in BJSC 180 to make the EOY top 20 as I have in the previous two years, but I have my entry ready and will give it a shot.

After my original entry was beaten to the confirmation stage by 4 minutes, I needed something pretty special to replace it. This is on brand with the contest's "180" theme in sounding unlike anything I've sent before. It also marks the first time I've gone 6 contests without recycling a BJSC artist - although all 7 of BJSC 153-159 marked the first appearances of their lead artists, the featured artist of BJSC 158 (Aviella) had been sent prior.

A final contest of the year which could have gone two very different ways - my original entry finished in 4th place for Cor Lupus whose 246 points would have lifted me back into the top 20 for the EOY, while my replacement avoided me a first DNQ streak in very unusual circumstances (aside from Bøtanikkä withdrawing, Altyr Muunilinst were unfortunate to miss out at 2 points behind mine to which they gave 3 points, and when they may have otherwise have been helped by non-voters) - so instead I can settle for yet another qualifying scrape followed by a sub-top 30 finish. The 97 points mean that I finish in 25th place in the EOY, which continues a downward trajectory of 17-19-25, but it would have been a lot lower with a third DNQ.

The only medal being Pagasa's late bronze means I end a run of 6 final appearances in which received exactly one 18, all from different nations:

Now that the results have been announced for the 75th song contest I've entered on Buzzjack, time for an update:

Following my last update, a fourth 2nd place finish during 2025 followed in The Best Song Contest In The World... Ever! The year ended with a 5th place finish in Club Bizarre, bringing me to nine top 5 finishes during the year, without a win to follow my only one in the first Bop Idol in 2024. Then tonight, my entry to PFSC's Best Of 2025 Special brought me my 25th top 10 finish in total, and my first 10th place finish in any contest, which means I've now finished in every position in the top 10 at least once!

In fact, I now have a top 19 clean sweep, and 20th remains the only missing position all the way down to 27th. My most frequent finishes are now jointly 2nd(!), 16th, 21st and DNQ (x) with 5 apiece - that first 21st place for Picture Parlour after losing a tiebreak to Singerpurear's Kosheen entry which I'd bumped up in my votes continues to taunt me:

A high turnout meant there were more DNQ spots than usual, and despite 12 voters putting this in their top 10 out of 31 songs to choose from in semi 1, this took one of them. It leaves The Hellp's withdrawal-assisted qualifier as my only one in the last three, the first Bronzil Q not to be part of a streak. Although this is only the 6th DNQ in my 31 contests to date, it feels a bit like a 6th DNQ in the last 7, with how most of my qualifiers have performed in that time. I've now only had 3 top 30 finishes in the last 12 BJSC contests (25%), while over the same period I've had a higher percentage of top 3 (i.e. podium) finishes in anonymous song contests on Buzzjack, with 6 out of the last 21 (not counting Buzzfestivalen and Spin Offs), most recently another 2nd place since the update above in the Retro contest result last week - even taking into account differing contest sizes and other mitigating circumstances, that's quite some contrast. Sure, some of those songs could have done well in BJSC if I'd sent them here instead - most likely 'harvest sky' (if I'd sent it on discovery in 2024), 'As Fast As I Can', and 'POLLYANNA' - but there's a lot riding on BJSC 182 to try to turn Bronzil fortunes around.

I considered many songs for this contest, but they boiled down to three choices - recycle a previously successful BJSC artist, send my favourite new song of 2026 that's also been in Pop Track of the Week, or something older from another completely unknown artist that strikes a chord with me and why I take part in this contest in the first place - so the third option it is, and Chilean duo Binzatina make it 8 entries in a row for non-recycled artists. On paper the semi draw has not been kind to it - in my past 4 finals I've received 160 points from nations in this semi compared to 257 (60% more) in the opposite one - so I can only hope enough others hear what I heard to avoid a first ever DNQ streak 🤞
