Posted March 18, 20232 yr South American Qualification The South American Qualification will consist of one group stage of 10 teams who will play home-and-away round-robin fixtures. The top 6 will qualify directly to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 7th placed team will qualify for the Intercontinental Play-Offs. Qualification will begin in September 2023. Ecuador will begin with a 3-point deduction for falsifying birth documents for Byron Castillo in the previous World Cup qualification campaign.
July 13, 20232 yr Ecuador will begin with a 3-point deduction for falsifying birth documents for Byron Castillo in the previous World Cup qualification campaign. I guess that's fair enough - definitely think it was the right decision to keep them in the last tournament.
July 18, 20232 yr I think Venezuela and Bolivia are the only two nations you'd probably say have realistically no chance, any of the other 8 could directly qualify, go to playoffs, or go out altogether (well minus Brazil or Argentina for that last part)
September 4, 20231 yr Author Less than 9 months after Argentina's dramatic victory on penalties over France in Qatar, the qualification for the next World Cup officially begins on Thursday. Argentina start their title-defence at home to an already point-detected Ecuadorm, while the first game of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers is between Paraguay and Peri. Full fixtures for this week: Matchday 1 (Thursday 7th September - Friday 8th September): Paraguay v Peru Colombia v Venezuela Argentina v Ecuador Uruguay v Chile Brazil v Bolivia Matchday 2 (Tuesday 12th September) Bolivia v Argentina Ecuador v Uruguay Venezuela v Paraguay Chile v Colombia Peru v Brazil A very difficult start for Bolivia!

September 12, 20231 yr All the top countries have road tests today: Argentina will probably still cruise at Bolivia, but even they have a tough road environment. Colombia at Chile, Brazil at Peru, and especially Uruguay at the mile-high stadium in Quito, Ecuador all provide tricky situations. South American (and CONCACAF) regional qualifying is a bloodbath because many of the home venues have their own characteristics that make them tough road trips. The geography is quite varied and the fans are...something else as far as how much passion they display. If you see a 2-1 road win by a Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, or USA at any mid-tier or higher opponent, they truly earned it. That's why Brazil having 45 points last time is unthinkable. Ecuador also have to thank a 96th minute winner to mean they win their second game and move into the play-off spot. They would be 3rd if it wasn't for the points deduction. After 3 matches Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile and Venezuela would qualify for the World Cup and Ecuador would head to the Inter-Continental Play-Offs.
October 13, 20231 yr Brazil's next three matches are away to Uruguay, away to Colombia and home versus Argentina. They could come out of that mid-table.
October 13, 20231 yr Nice to see Venezuela that high up - probably unlikely they'll stay that high but we can hope!

October 18, 20231 yr Well with the World Cup expanding to 48 teams, it's more than fair considering how highly ranked most of the region is.
October 18, 20231 yr I get that but Argentina have basically almost qualified already with that points tally so over half their "qualifying" games are pretty much pointless as there's no incentive to come top, just to finish inside the top 6.
