Biography

A few weeks after Olivia Rodrigo’s “drivers license” became the biggest song in the world, Saturday Night Live ran a sketch that featured a bunch of middle-aged guys shooting pool in a dive bar. One puts “drivers license” on the jukebox. Another complains that it just sounds like a teenage girl sitting alone at a piano. By the end of their discourse, they’re all in tears, singing along. “I was driving around my neighborhood listening to really sad songs, like, crying in the car,” Rodrigo told Apple Music. “And I got home and I was like, ‘Maybe I’ll write a song about this: crying in the car.’” Rodrigo had tapped into a universal experience: The middle-aged guys weren’t teenage girls, but they’d also driven around listening to sad songs.

Rodrigo was just 17 when the song came out, but she had been getting ready for years. Born in Temecula, California, in 2003, she started lessons in piano, voice, and acting as a child, and went on to star in Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. But, really, what could prepare you for breaking the global single-week streaming record for a female artist? Especially on your first single? And getting a nod from Taylor Swift in the meantime? (Along with “drivers license” winning the Apple Music Award for Top Song of the Year in 2021, Rodrigo’s debut LP, SOUR, was the Top Album of the Year and Rodrigo herself was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year.)

Like Swift—and Lorde, too—Rodrigo has a knack for conjuring big feelings through small details: an ex singing along to their Billy Joel with his new love (“deja vu”), reading his self-help books “so you’d think that I was smart” (“enough for you”). Her content is all-caps, but her delivery is lowercase, lacing bedroom pop with a vulnerability and anger rare for teen pop: “Where’s my f***ing teenage dream?” she wonders on “brutal.” “I’m the biggest emo drama queen,” Rodrigo tells Apple Music. Maybe. But the key to letting it out is keeping it together. - Apple Music

Biography

Dave

Challenging power and perception with a free-spoken approach to rap, Dave has indelibly amplified hip-hop’s voice in Britain. Born David Orobosa Omoregie in Brixton, London in 1998, Dave suddenly implanted himself in the UK rap scene in 2016, first with the electric grime alliance “Thiago Silva” with AJ Tracey and then when Drake jumped on the remix of the velvety “Wanna Know” from Dave’s first EP, Six Paths. Rebuffing label advances to pursue his career independently, he demonstrated a self-reliant streak on releases such as his 2017 EP Game Over, whose “Question Time,” a scathing attack on Theresa May’s Conservative government, garnered him an Ivor Novello songwriting award. Dave’s full-length debut, the Mercury Prize winner Psychodrama, followed in 2019; epitomizing his achingly honest rap style, it laid bare personal vulnerabilities while challenging institutional racism in a provocative fashion rarely heard in British rap. The centerpiece of the lavishly soundscaped album was “Black,” a heart-wrenching portrait of the prejudice affronting Black lives. At the 2020 BRIT Awards, where Psychodrama won Album of the Year, Dave started his performance of “Black” by accompanying himself on piano and ended it by excoriating British Prime Minister Boris Johnson as a “real racist” and executing a perfect mic drop. - Apple Music

Central Cee

Central Cee is proving himself to be one of London’s most exciting emerging artists. Whilst only just turning 22, the rapper had already released a slew of solid tracks in addition to a powerful Next Up Freestyle on Mixtape Madness reflecting the rising star’s versatility and distinctive delivery. Building on this foundation, in 2020, Central Cee has gone from strength to strength dropping two singles ‘Day In A Life’ and ‘Molly’, with both tracks having racked up 8 million audio streams collectively. The heat surrounding Central Cee along with some killer short freestyle videos showcasing Central Cee’s lyrical abilities has led to him doubling his instagram following in a matter of months (currently 135K). He’s also gained support from various artists at home and abroad including a co-sign from US rapper Big Sean. Music has been an integral part of Central Cee’s upbringing, dating back to the tender age of 8. His eagerness to create his own musical legacy is deeply rooted within his earliest memories of absorbing the rich sounds of his dad's old school hip hop collection. - Spotify

Really wish Olivia would just get one week at #1.

I know it's been said a lot on here so apologies but what on earth do people hear in Sprinter for it to be so massive? It's so run of the mill.

I'm so pleased As It Was has finally left the top 20. Now I can finally listen to the Chart Show again for the first time since April, or thereabouts.

more like february :kink: cant believe its stuck around for almost 5 months after being reset at the brits

Its so sad that Sprinter has held Vampire off of no. 1. I really enjoyed Sour but this is my favourite Olivia song easily (quite easy to say that as there isn't much of a discography yet).
really really hope olivia can manage at least a week at #1, vampire deserves! and cruel summer too tbh though both getting #1 would be asking too much lmao
Wonder how long sprinter will get at the top. Will be interesting to find out if it did indeed increase this week. If it did I could see it getting to 10 weeks at #1!

Biography

Stormzy

Grime attracts big personalities, but even by the genre’s imposing standards, Stormzy isn’t so much a rapper as a force of nature: a 6’5” lyrical whirlwind boasting a powerhouse voice and one of the most impressive ascents in pop music, stepping up to headline Glastonbury within five years of his debut EP. Born Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr. in 1993, Stormzy was still a boy when grime was in its infancy, and he came up battling fellow teens at youth centers in his native Croydon, London. By the time he was 20, he had launched his “WickedSkengMan” series, uploading freestyles over classic grime beats, and he swiftly developed a rep for his tough staccato flow and pugnacious attitude. Fittingly, Stormzy performed his 2015 single “Shut Up,” one of his earliest hits, at a heavyweight boxing match. “I set trends, dem man copy/They catch feelings, I catch bodies,” he raps on the song, and it’s true that when he throws down the gauntlet, he tends to make history: 2015’s “WickedSkengMan 4” was the first freestyle ever to break into the UK Top 40, and in 2017, his debut album, Gang Signs & Prayer, was the first grime album to go to No. 1 in the UK charts, 14 years after Dizzee Rascal’s Mercury Prize-winning Boy in da Corner first carved out a space in UK pop for the upstart underground genre. But Stormzy quicky proved himself interested in more than just besting his rivals, instead using his platform to become the voice of conscience for young and marginalized people across the UK. At Glastonbury 2017, he delivered a moving tribute to the victims of that summer’s Grenfell Tower fire; at the 2018 BRIT Awards, he aimed a scathing freestyle at Prime Minister Theresa May, whose government he accused of negligence after the fire. Musically, too, Stormzy has shown a willingness to push beyond grime’s traditional limits, dipping into R&B and gospel as he vacillates between taunts and introspection. “I would be a bit fake if I just gave you pure grime albums,” Stormzy told Apple Music. “I’m going to embrace my musicality because that is true to me as well. I love melody and I love R&B and I love pop music. Bruv, I’m going to do whatever I like.” - Apple Music

RAYE

When RAYE speaks of her music, she doesn’t just talk of songs but of “stories”. And the South London singer-songwriter (born Rachel Agatha Keen in 1997) has quite the knack for writing them. Nominated for the Songwriter of the Year Ivor Novello Award in 2022, RAYE first broke through in 2014 with her star-signalling self-released debut EP, Welcome to the Winter, followed by the Stormzy-featuring Second EP two years later. A stream of singles and collaborations, including with Stefflon Don, Mr Eazi and Jax Jones, hinted at an artist who could shape-shift between musical spheres—and excel wherever she landed. But despite such successes (her name has also featured on the credits of songs by artists such as Beyoncé, Ellie Goulding, Little Mix and John Legend), RAYE felt trapped behind the scenes. In 2021—just months after the release of her chart-topping dance-pop anthem “BED” alongside Joel Corry and David Guetta—the singer-songwriter wrote on social media that she hadn’t been “allowed” to release her debut album and that she was “sick of being slept on” by her label, an allegation that sent shockwaves through the music industry. And it was then that RAYE returned to those stories, as she came to work on her long-awaited 2023 debut LP, My 21st Century Blues, as an independent artist. On it, she explores being a young woman in music and the trauma of sexual assault and substance abuse, but also the things any woman RAYE’s age might be moved to write about: climate change, relationships ending, falling in love with someone new. “This is about me telling the stories I want to tell, in the order I want to tell them, through the sonic landscape I want to tell them,” RAYE told Apple Music at the time of the album’s release. My 21st Century Blues, she added, wasn’t made with mainstream success in mind, yet that’s exactly what it brought. After the confronting “Hard Out Here.” and the made-for-repeat-listening “Black Mascara.”, she unleashed “Escapism.” featuring 070 Shake, a viral hit on both sides of the Atlantic and the biggest song of RAYE’s up to that point. It signalled, without doubt, that her time had come. “It is just the most beautiful validation,” said RAYE. “To know that you’re right to back yourself when you feel conviction and you feel passionately about something. I made this [album] battling and figuring out freedom, and I’m so excited for the artist I get to become. This has set the tone for me.” - Apple Music

Biography

will.i.am

When the Black Eyed Peas made the jump from the L.A. conscious-rap underground to the top of the pops in the early 2000s, their crossover success opened the doors for group ringleader will.i.am to execute his own transformation from mere MC into omnipresent showbiz impresario. Whether he’s dropping his own chart-busting solo hits, producing tracks for pop’s biggest names, appearing in Hollywood blockbusters, or coaching the next generation of stars on The Voice, will.i.am (born William James Adams Jr. in 1975) is the snazzily dressed personification of hip-hop’s evolution from gritty inner-city music to a world-dominating cultural force embedded in all facets of the contemporary musical landscape. “I like challenges, I like doing things that push myself,” he tells Apple Music, and even before the Peas blew up with their third album, Elephunk, in 2003, will.i.am was already expanding his horizons. His 2001 solo effort, Lost Change, showcased both his outsized charismatic personality and his ability to infuse classic soul, funk and jazz beats with global influences and experimental aesthetics. But once the Peas reinvented themselves as America’s most reliable purveyors of libidinous dance-pop bops, will.i.am became the go-to producer for A-list artists across all genres—Justin Timberlake and U2 included—looking to inject their music with the same streetwise sass and joie de vivre. Released in 2013, #willpower, is the ultimate testament to will.i.am’s kingmaker powers and ear-to-the-ground expertise, roping in an all-star cast (Justin Bieber, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus) for an era-defining set of EDM-pumped bangers. But the social consciousness that fuelled the Peas’ early work remains at the core of will.i.am’s identity: His breezy 2021 aspirational anthem “American Dream” doubled as fundraiser to improve higher-education access in marginalised communities. - Apple Music

Britney Spears

Although Britney Spears’ career is often viewed through the lens of major ’80s teen-pop luminaries such as Debbie Gibson or Madonna, the vocalist outgrew her prefab, mall-music image and became one of the 21st century’s most adventurous pop stars. Spears’ initial performing experience came on TV, as a cast member on a ’90s reboot of The Mickey Mouse Club. After her time on that show ended, the LA-raised artist became a pillar of the nascent Y2K teen-pop boom: her 1999 debut, ...Baby One More Time, was certified diamond (10 times platinum) in less than a year, and the next year’s Oops!...I Did It Again shipped 9 million copies by mid-2001. Multiple dance-geared hits followed, courtesy of collaborations with sonic icons—Swedish pop guru Max Martin (“...Baby One More Time”), adventurous production team The Neptunes (“I’m a Slave 4 U”) and electro mavens Bloodshy and Avant (“Toxic”). Sales aside, however, Spears became one of the biggest pop stars ever due to the savvy way she expresses the complicated calculus of being a woman in the modern world. Her lyrics tackle massive fame, romantic drama and the challenge of maintaining a sense of self—all of which translates to an emotionally vulnerable persona that finds Spears asserting she’s a survivor (“Stronger”), sexually empowered (woe to the cheater depicted in “Womanizer”) and not a pushover. - Apple Music

I can definitely see why Sprinter is big but then I genuinely really like Dave and always have done so I could be biased here it’s definitely not amongst his best though but it’s a bit more commercial than the stuff when he is at his best

Olivia does deserve a week at #1 though. Really glad that Billie managed top ten as well but would love to see Popular in there too. That Billie track is one of my favourite tracks of the year and amongst her very best for me - stunning

 Future chart hit?

I pray no, but the fact that its already top 200 on apple suggests that its inevitable that I will become a hit

missed most of the chart but caught the end! glad becky made it decently in, hoping it can do similar to remember from 2 years ago as its a bop! also hope dua and the weeknd as well as jorja can make the top 10 asap, i think dua has the best chance this week but hope the others can make it in too! also fingers crossed i can see you can hold up a bit instead of plummeting, its such a bopppp
I must be the only one on here who actually likes Who Told You (Drake's part does drag on a bit though).

Nah I like it. A lot better than Sprinter which I despise.

I do hope Olivia can somehow still get at least a week at the top but with 'Sprinter' looking to have increased this week that chance is really starting to fade, still a very respectable hit for her either way.

its genuinely so bad i dont know how anyone let them release it  im hoping most of those streams are curiosity streams from people intrigued to see asnother brit-will collab and that it flops cos its actually so shit

Lana getting a new hit off the 'Born To Die' album! (Don't immediately recall the song from the title tbh oop but I'm sure it'll come back to me when I hear it again).

SOVUDUWRISOMINOVIGEBROPHESTURAKESLIRAJACROVOJOSTEGACIRODRUVORIWITIMIDROMI missing the top 100 in the end though, poor hen x

I think that's Clementine Douglas' first credited top 100 hit on the OCC website? Though she is credited on Chase And Status' 'Mixed Emotions' on Spotify at least.
