4TH JANUARY

Two days of pre Christmas trading prevent sales looking too bad this week though as per usual nothing new enters the top 10 and everyone is down sales wise.

The headline is that Shakin’ Stevens holds the top slot on a reduced sale of 89,505 with almost 70% of those coming from those two pre Christmas day sales so he must fear for his position next week. The other clearly festive chart offerings are also in decline, Band Aid recede 3-4 (47,158) and though Aled Jones and Wham! both hold at No’s 5 & 6 they are both well down sales wise attracting 39,763 and 27,931 respectively. Madonna bounces back up 9-7 (25,313) and is now in between a Wham! sandwich with the groups other chart hit “I’m Your Man” holding at No 8 (25,007).

Dee C Lee holds at No 10 (19,618) just behind Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin who slip 7-9 (21,879).

Next week’s chart topper will probably be either Whitney Houston who holds at No 2 with a strong sale of 60,350 which puts her about 30,000 away from the half million mark, or Pet Shop Boys who have been quietly moving steadily upwards through the year end period and this week complete their journey into the top 3 moving 4-3 (52,564)- place your bets now.

1- MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE- Shakin Stevens (89,505)

2- SAVING ALL MY LOVE FOR YOU- Whitney Houston (60,350)

3- WEST END GIRLS- Pet Shop Boys (52,564)

4- DO THEY KNOW IT’S CHRISTMAS- Band Aid (47,158)

5- WALKING IN THE AIR- Aled Jones (39,763)

6- LAST CHRISTMAS- Wham! (27,931)

7- DRESS YOU UP- Madonna (25,313)

8- I’M YOUR MAN- Wham! (25,007)

9- SEPARATE LIVES- Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin (21,879)

10- SEE THE DAY- Dee C Lee (19,618)

That's it for 1985 folks- thanks to all who commented as usual. Hopefully you found it interesting!
Very interesting as ever Gezza, can’t wait to see what the first no1 on 1986 is 😁

Dress You Up is definitely one of Madonna's most under-rated songs

hope PSB are the next #1 rather than Whitney returning

great thread as usual Gezza, keep them coming <3

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally catching up properly on the September posts in this thread. I hadn't realised Midge Ure's week at #1 was by such a small margin (less than 550 copies), but the song's a beauty so thank goodness it got there! Talking Heads - Road To Nowhere is a huge fave of mine too, hope it gets somewhere in the #6s rate next year. I suspected 'Take On Me' might have done six figures in at least one of its weeks, unlucky timing as Gezza said. Not sure if some might have confused 'Miami Vice Theme' with 'Crockett's Theme' which reached #2 in 1987 - I gave the former a listen and didn't recognise it, sounds OK though.

Thanks for another immaculate thread Gezza!

will we get 86 too @Gezza?
