Evening all! After a couple of years away from the Chart Forum, the Quiz Season is back - and this time we're trying something new! We'll be working alongside The Lounge for a joint quiz season between the two forums.

The season will consist of 12 quizzes, hosted between now and December, with the Chart Forum and the Lounge taking it in turns to host a quiz each week. The results will be compiled by adding together the scores from all of the quizzes, so we'll be able to see who is the ultimate quizzer from both forums!

Schedule:

Week 1 (w/c 18/9): Chart Forum - Pointless With A Twist (PeteFromLeeds)
Week 2 (w/c 25/9): Missing Vowels Quiz (PeteFromLeeds) - Hosted in The Lounge[/i]
Week 3 (w/c 2/10): Quiz of 3 Kinds (awardinary)
Week 4 (w/c 9/10): Hosted in The Lounge
Week 5 (w/c 16/10): Chart Forum - Family Fortunes (Y'all Starlight)
Week 6 (w/c 23/10): Album Cover Puzzle (Calum) / TBC (Chez Wombat) - Hosted in The Lounge
Week 7 (w/c 30/10): Chart Forum - Cryptic Crossword (Mango)
Week 8 (w/c 06/11): TBC - Hosted in The Lounge
Week 9 (w/c 13/11): Chart Forum - NMTBJ (JulianT)
Week 10 (w/c 20/11): TBC - Hosted in The Lounge
Week 11 (w/c 27/11): Chart Forum - Cryptic Clues (King Rollo)
Week 12 (w/c 5/12): Chart Predictions by Mango - Hosted in UK Charts

If you would like to host a quiz, please post in this thread the quiz you'd like to host and the week you'd like to host it. As this is the sign-up thread for the Chart Forum, it would be great if your quiz could have a chart theme - but do make sure everyone has a chance to do well as folks from The Lounge will be taking part as well! If you think your quiz idea is better suited to the Lounge, feel free to post a message in Wardy's corresponding thread there. (no need to sign up if you just want to take part in the quizzes!)

Quiz threads are generally open for around a week, with a results thread posted once all results have been collected.

Here's a quick overview of the main Quiz formats on Buzzjack if you fancy giving hosting one a go! (credit to Bré for writing about 90% of these words back in 2019)

FAMILY FORTUNES
(recent example: voting thread / results thread)
In this quiz, the host asks a series of questions (typically 10 of them) and participants answer each question with what they think the MOST popular response will be. Points are scored based on how many other people gave the same answer as you to each question, so for example if the question is 'name a single by El Chombo' and 15 people responded 'Dame Tu Cosita', each of those people would be given 14 points for that question. Most points wins.

POINTLESS
(recent example: voting thread / results thread)
This quiz is basically the inverse of Family Fortunes. The host will, again, ask a series of ~10 questions, but here the participants answer each question with what they think the LEAST popular response will be. Points are allocated the same way as in Family Fortunes but here it's the player with the fewest points at the end that wins (so the best answer to a question - a Pointless answer - is one that no other participant answered). There's also the catch that an incorrect answer is penalised by giving the answerer the maximum possible score for that question, i.e. one less than the number of participants (so if there are 31 participants and someone answered the question 'name a winner of the X Factor' with 'Michelle McManus', they would be given 30 points for that question).

There have been variations on this theme in the past, such as Pointless with Bonuses and Pointless With A Twist (and Pointless Fortune which combined Pointless with Family Fortunes)

NEVER MIND THE BUZZJACKS
(recent example: voting thread / results thread)
The host uploads onto SoundCloud/YouTube a series of short (usually instrumental) clips from songs, usually about 20 of them, and participants simply have to name the songs, scoring a point for each one they get right, or a half-point for guessing the right artist. There's also often some kind of bonus questions based on the songs on the side for additional points. Here's a quick guide RabbitFurCoat put together wayyy back in the day with some instructions for uploading a round of NMTBJ onto SoundCloud.

ALBUM COVER PUZZLE
(recent example: voting thread / results thread)
The host makes a collage of cropped sections from album covers, usually about 20 of them, and participants name the albums that they are taken from. Participants get points for each one they get right - this may just be 1 point per correct answer, or a varying number of points decided by the hosts based on how difficult they think each one is to guess. Like in NMTBJ there may also be bonus questions on the side for additional points.

OTHER FORMATS
You are also welcome to try other formats out which aren't listed above! Other formats we've had in the past include:

Dingbats (courtesy of PeteFromLeeds)
Only Connect (courtesy of Suedehead)
Emoji Quiz (courtesy of awardinary)
Quick Fire Quiz (courtesy of chrissmith276)
Song Title Anagrams (courtesy of jimwatts)
Answer Smash (courtesy of StoneDragon)

So you're welcome to propose something brand new or use one of these alternative formats as well.

The leaderboard works by giving 30 points to the winner of each quiz, 29 points to the runner-up and so on. If there are more than 30 participants, anyone outside the top 30 will walk away with nothing. If the host is unable to participate in their own quiz (ie if it's NMTBJs/ACP) or wishes to sit out their own FF/Pointless quiz (hosts are allowed to participate in these, on the basis that they write their own answers before others start coming in) then 'host compensation points' are given by taking the average of their points attained from other quizzes.

Let me know if there are any questions, and happy quizzing!

You can put me down for w/c 13/11. I'll decide on my quiz format nearer the time.
  • 2 weeks later...
Can the schedule be combined with the lounge schedule so that we can see at a glance which weeks are hosted and which are available, regardless of whether they're hosted here or in the lounge? I might potentially be able to bring mine a week or two forward.

Thats something I didn't get? Why are not all quizzes in here? I almost missed q2 and only saw it like 5 minutes before the deadline

Sure more people would see them in here

They're not all hosted in here as we wanted to encourage folks who usually only post in one of the two forums to venture into the other (plenty of people in the Lounge never visit the Chart Forum!) - plus the fact that hosting quizzes in the Chart Forum restricts them to being about music!

I did post the link to the Lounge quiz in the previous quiz, plus I sent a PM out to everyone currently on the Leaderboard, but happy to post them in here as well ^_^ I think the way the schedule has gone now the next quiz will be Family Fortunes in here, followed by a couple of quizzes in The Lounge the week after to bring us back up to speed.

Thanks, Pete. Might also be worth updating the lounge post similarly.

So am I right in thinking there won't be a quiz this week?

Done already :magic:

Depends what you mean by 'this week'! There isn't one the week we're on now due to changes in availability, so we're having two quizzes in The Lounge later on. The next one is due to start next Monday in here so long as Nate is still ok to host!

It should be going ahead this Monday!

I can bring my quiz forward a couple of weeks and host it w/c 30/10 if that works.

If we're still struggling for a host in the later weeks I also have an idea for quite a simple, low-maintenance quiz I could run for then.

I would like to host a quiz in which I give cryptic clues to the titles of UK number 1 singles.

Can you put me down for w/c 27th November?

That's fine (for both of you!) - will update the OP now.

Just so you know, my quiz will be a cryptic crossword! The theme isn't UK number 1 singles though so there shouldn't be much crossover but just wanted to let you know.
