About 6 months ago this playlist idea popped into my head for all of the Now albums and I'd love to see what others choose!

So, for this forum, what is your favourite song from each of the U.K. Now albums released between 1983 and 1999? (volumes 1 - 44)

This Now Wiki site is a good resource for quickly finding the track lists.

Nice list Dandy! #19 was probably the most difficult decision for me with Enigma, Massive Attack and The KLF :drama:

(and fair, Julian :kink: every Now album is one of the musical marathons I have completed in the past which I'm sure is to the surprise of no-one)

all down to record labels Alex - Now was EMI/Virgin and Madonna was Warner Brothers/Sire, so it was easy to get the rights to EMI/Virgin acts but Warner Brothers required dosh upfront - plus there was a rival Hits series which catered for different record labels that Now couldn't negotiate rights to include tracks from.
Why there is nothing from Madonna on 80s editions ?

She or her record company didn't authorise inclusion.

- sorry, I missed PCF's reply

Now 36 was one of the most difficult for me, I really wanted to choose all of these:

2. "Breathe" The Prodigy 4:00

2. The Smiths - What Difference Does It Make? [2nd Matthew Wilder, 3rd Fiction Factory]

3. Sister Sledge - Thinking Of You [2nd Bronski Beat, 3rd Bob Marley... or maybe Ultravox... yeah this going to take me way too long  ]

4. U2 - Pride (In The Name Of Love) [2nd Giorgio Moroder with Philip Oakey, 3rd Ray Parker Jr.]

5. Kool and The Gang - Cherish [2nd Scritti Politti, 3rd Katrina and The Waves]

6. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill [2nd Midge Ure, 3rd Eurythmics]

7. Furniture - Brilliant Mind [no 2nd or 3rd as we took a bit of a dip in quality about now oops]

8. Pet Shop Boys - Suburbia

9. The Housemartins - Caravan Of Love

10. The Pogues with Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York

11. Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth

Will do the rest in instalments maybe...

Do we think there’d be enough interest to do a rate of each Now in turn? Maybe voting for the Top 10 on each one. Would be a long term project obviously.

Would there be interest in lists of songs and judging them?

Are you forgetting which forum you’re on? 😂

If there's a need to reduce the number of songs that we need to include in any rate, they can be reduced to the 5/10/20 with the most streams.

but then you'd introduce a bias, some of the songs are not even on spotify

i'd rather rate, vote for all of them

I take your point about songs not being on Spotify.

And you managed to exclude Monaco and Mansun.:o

Both good but not quite as good as the others for me.

It’s surprising just how variable the quality of the now albums is. Some I was struggling to find things I liked at all where as others suddenly had 10 tracks that were all better than anything on the one before

Always tough to pick one song from a list, but here goes:

1. Howard Jones - New Song

2. Joe Fagin - That's Livin' Alright

3. Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel - White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)

4. Giorgio Moroder with Phil Oakey - Together In Electric Dreams

5. Stephen 'Tin Tin' Duffy - Icing on the Cake

6. Simple Minds - Alive & Kicking

7. Aurra - You and Me Tonight

8. Paul Hardcastle - The Wizard

9. Steve 'Silk' Hurley - Jack Your Body

10. Jan Hammer - Crockett's Theme

11. Jack 'n' Chill - That Jack That House Built

12. The Timelords - Doctorin the Tardis

13. Inner City - Big Fun

14. Marc Almond ft Gene Pitney - Somethings Gotten Hold of my Heart

15. Queen - I Want It All

16. De La Soul - Eye Know

17. Orbital - Chime

18. The La's - There She Goes

19. INXS - Disappear

20. Erasure - Love To Hate You

21. The Temptations - My Girl

22. SL2 - On A Ragga Tip

23. INXS - Baby Don't Cry

24. Shaggy - Oh Carolina

25. Inner Circle - Sweat (A La La La La Long)

26. Leftfield Lydon - Open Up

27. Deep Forest - Sweet Lullaby

41. Fatboy Slim - Gangster Trippin

42. Blockster - You Should Be...

If I was to do this again tomorrow the list might be different. Some have several strong candidates and some don't have any.
