Billie Eilish

What Was I Made For?

170x170bb.jpg

Soundtrack single from Barbie

Released: 13th July 2023

Label: Darkroom / Interscope Records

On “What Was I Made For?”, her contribution to the Barbie soundtrack, Billie Eilish contemplates life in plastic. “Taking a drive/I was an ideal/Looked so alive/Turns out I'm not real/Just something you paid for/What was I made for?” she reflects, channeling the titular doll as she moves between worlds. If you’ve seen the trailer for the Greta Gerwig-directed film, you’ll know that it’s more than just a breezy ride in a hot-pink Corvette—it's an irreverent take on a complicated pop-cultural icon, and Eilish matches that depth with a poignant ballad. “I don't know how to feel, but I wanna try,” she sings. “I don't know how to feel, but someday I might.” - Apple Music

Biography

When singer-songwriter Billie Eilish feels something new, the first thing she does is take out her phone and write it down. “You can write anything,” she told Apple Music in an interview for the Up Next series. “You can say the truth, and you can not tell anyone that it’s the truth—you can just write it, and it’ll be yours.” Raised and homeschooled in Los Angeles by actor/musician parents, Eilish (born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell in 2001) started writing songs when she was around 11, exploring a strain of melancholy, minimal and slightly surrealistic pop influenced as much by Lana Del Rey as the radical honesty of rappers like Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt. Writing and recording with her brother—and producer—Finneas O’Connell at their parents’ house, Eilish released dont smile at me in 2017, followed by an ever-evolving series of singles—a prime example of the fact that, in the streaming era, artists are now free to move directly from their bedrooms into the spotlight. Despite the attention, Eilish is doing her best to stake out a space of freedom and fluidity, expanding her range of collaborators (Vince Staples, Khalid) and dodging easy definition. “If people think I have a sound, if people are like, ‘Oh yeah, her sound is this,’ if someone asks you what my sound is and you have an answer for them—you’re wrong,” she told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe. “Instead of trying to find a sound, when I want to make something and when I have an idea of what I want to make, I’m just going to make that.” - Apple Music

Biography

“I think there’s a time in every artist’s life [when] they have to do something that isn’t for fans, isn’t for success, isn’t for touring,” Miley Cyrus told Apple Music in 2018. Cyrus could’ve been speaking about any number of moments from her profoundly varied career. Born Destiny Hope Cyrus—the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus—in Tennessee in 1992, the innovative artist has hardly stayed in one lane for more than a single album since she broke from the bubblegum pop that catapulted her to stardom as Disney’s Hannah Montana. Her 2009 summer anthem “Party In the U.S.A.” earned her a rapid ascent within the pop world, where 2013’s Bangerz—which showcased her musical maturity with “Wrecking Ball” and experimented with elements of Dirty South hip-hop—made her an icon. Vocal about her pansexuality and love for marijuana, Cyrus has worked hard to shed her wholesome teen image, and simultaneously defied odds by earning a reputation for an intense work ethic and an unshakable self-assuredness. She headed to left-field with the psych-tinged 2015 album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, a collaboration with members of The Flaming Lips, and with 2017’s Younger Now, a countrified pop offering that featured godmother Dolly Parton. And she's teamed up with rappers Mike Will Made It and will.i.am, Sarah Barthel of electronic rock group Phantogram, and, in 2018, Mark Ronson for the dramatic hit single “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart.” Those frequent partnerships have been major catalysts in the creation of Cyrus' diverse catalog and in the cementing of her status as a pop pace-setter by refusing to let it, or herself, be easily defined. - Apple Music

Biography

Headie One

Honing his skills under the #OFB banner, North London rapper Headie One soon became one of drill's most engaging figures, finding national success alongside RV on the back of iconic mixtape Drillers & Trappers. Moving into solo work during the late 2010s, the rapper hit the Top Ten of the U.K. album chart with the 2019 mixtape Music X Road, and in 2020 went to number one with Edna, his first proper full-length. In addition to another commercial mixtape and several singles, Headie's subsequent output includes No Borders: European Compilation Project, featuring collaborations with artists spanning Europe. - Apple Music

K-Trap

K-Trap, MOBO award winning trailblazer and one of the leaders at the forefront of his generation for UK Rap Music. His uniquely vivid storytelling expressed through his lyrics showcasing the harsh reality of growing up in the concrete jungle streets of South London. His illustrious influence has amassed a substantial cult like following. A consistent streamline of quality releases has resulted in co-signs from the likes of Dave, Little Simz and Skepta (to name a few) and earned him a solidified spot in the UK music scene's hall of fame. Trap’s infamous Silver certified track WARM (10M YouTube) charted #17 in the Official UK Charts and has amassed over 41 Million Spotify Streams, alongside both of his 2022 Top 20 Official Chart Projects “The Last Whip 2” & “Joints”. - Spotify

Clavish

It’s fair to say that Clavish is on an upward trajectory after finding consistency with releasing music and often finding success in how it’s being received by the culture. In 2021 he released his EP 2022 a five-track teaser into what a Clavish project would sound like and this year alone he has released ‘Lately’, ‘Greece’ and ‘Sold Out Shows’. In his latest release ‘Public Figure’ the North-West rapper acknowledges his newfound position in rap culture, arguably being seen as one of the most exciting up-and-coming rappers in a new generation that comes directly after the crop of Dave, Fredo, J Hus, AJ Tracey and Mostack. Navigating his success, like all rappers he still struggles to remove himself from certain situations that were familiar to him in his old life, as he raps with quality cadence “You know I’m an artist but if I see three numbers you know I’m spinning the coop.” - New Wave Magazine

finally justice for Mitski after all these years or releasing great albums and songs

and never trouble the top 100 singles until now

Back to skipping a new entry this week then? (Although tbf Headie & K-Trap do have another higher newie too).

Aw disappointing that 'I Remember Everything' has dropped a couple of places despite being quite a bit higher on Spotify than it was last week, hope it'll get back to climbing next week.

#34 is good for Mitski, hopefully can get even higher in the coming weeks - there are lots of pretty stunning songs on her new album (the last 3 songs on it in particular are all excellent), 'My Love Mine All Mine' is far from the best on it imo but it is a lovely song and brilliant to see it charting. 'The Only Heartbreaker' should have been a breakthrough hit for her last era but I will take this one!

Jack acknowledged that PARK CHINOIS was too rude to play so guessing they don't have an edit / one that's worth playing

Meh this is okay, dance hits this year have been mostly so bland and filler - this includes.
