November 23, 20231 yr Author And another with 10/20: Number 22: Stereo MCs - Step It Up 05/12/1992 Stereo MCs Step It Up 12 16-{12}-15-17-16-15-15-21-31-41-61-73->12 4_8WNA9IX1o This was from the electronic band's Brit Award winning album "Connected". While the title track is better known these days due to having appeared on adverts, this is their highest charting single. A run of 7 weeks in the Top 20 without reaching the Top 10 was very rare at the time. I enjoyed Rush's guess for this - "a remix of ABBA - Money, Money, Money". 4 points: DalekTurret32, Danvember, Mangø, chrissmith276, Bjork, dandy*, King Rollo, paulgilb, jimwatts, rio309
November 23, 20231 yr 1979 is my joint favourite inclusion in this, the other is still to come and was my song of 1999...

November 23, 20231 yr Don't know 'Step It Up' but I gathered it'd be a 90s song nonetheless! I'm sure I should know '1979' as well but don't listen to Smashing Pumpkins so eh!
November 23, 20231 yr 'Funhouse' 'Dancing' is the first one I didn't get! And damn, it sounded so familiar but my mind wasn't going in the right direction... I kept thinking it was something like 'C'est la vie' (B*Witched) or 'MMMBop' for some reason. I'm surprised 'One Too Many' almost matched 'Funhouse'! I thought the voice sounded like P!nk but had to look through her songs to find it. Not familiar with 'Life In Technicolor II' and not a good guess for the least-identified one either. I was surprised I managed to remember 'Scared Of The Dark'! I considered '1979' for the most-identified one as I feel like it's an extremely recognisable riff, but Buzzjack may not be the right demographic for everyone to know it... but even then I would've expected it to rank higher! Love the song. Why Don't We did a good sample of it in 2020 too ('Slow Down'). I love 'Connected' but don't know any other Stereo MC's songs. It really sounds so much like the intro of 'Money, Money, Money'!!! I even tried checking WhoSampled to no avail.
November 24, 20231 yr Did I get points for the Coldplay song? It was included in my answers but I'm not listed in the result post!
November 24, 20231 yr Oh shoot, I meant to send answers but completely forgot, sorry! I recognise most of these revealed, but I only got around 7-10 for sure listening to the clips so probably would've been me failing as usual :')
November 24, 20231 yr I also considered 1979 as one of the most recognized so far only missed Little Mix and Snoop Dogg

November 24, 20231 yr Author This one had 9/20 correct plus 3 partially correct: Number 16: Foo Fighters - DOA 17/09/2005 Foo Fighters D.O.A. 25 {25}-49-71->3 _5loypOaRdA I assumed this stood for "dead or alive" but in fact it's "dead on arrival" - nice. It was the follow up to "Best Of You" which is fabulous and remains their highest peaking single. I don't think this is top tier Foos but still very good and has their distinctive sound - hence some of you managed to recognise the band but not the song. 4 points: Mangø, chrissmith276, Bjork, dandy*, Roba., LewisGT, Riser, jimwatts, Rush 2 points for correct artist: DalekTurret32, Danvember, rio309
November 24, 20231 yr Author 9/20 plus a correct band: Number 8: Snow Patrol - Chocolate 24/04/2004 Snow Patrol Chocolate 24 {24}-38-44-53-57-73->6 FT62Gwv70kM This was the follow up to the masterpiece "Run" from the huge "Final Straw" album, and isn't as good as "Run" but does have a strong riff and melody. This could have featured in my previous quiz theme due to the title never featuring in the lyrics - in fact I'm not sure why it's called "Chocolate" as it seems to be about relationship woes and the video depicts impending doom. Any ideas? 4 points: Danvember, Mangø, chrissmith276, Bjork, dandy*, Roba., paulgilb, jimwatts, rio309 2 points for correct artist: uptempo_owww!
November 24, 20231 yr This one took me ages to get. I knew I knew it but it bugged me for ages before it finally clicked!
November 24, 20231 yr Author Also 9/20 plus a correct artist: Number 26: Eurythmics - Who's That Girl? 09/07/1983 Eurythmics Who's That Girl? 3 29-9-4-{3}-4-7-13-24-34-51->10 -5iDKWV6Chg This delightful slice of synth-pop was the lead single from their acclaimed 3rd studio album "Touch", which also includes the even more fabulous "Here Comes The Rain Again". In the video Annie Lennox appears both as a feminine blond wigged lady and as a male Elvis-like version of herself. 4 points: Mangø, chrissmith276, Bjork, dandy*, King Rollo, Roba., paulgilb, Riser, jimwatts 2 points for correct artist: DalekTurret32
November 24, 20231 yr I assumed this stood for "dead or alive" but in fact it's "dead on arrival" - nice.Unless you're Jay-Z and it's 'death of auto-tune' :D I thought it sounded familiar but must've been thinking of something else similar as I don't know it, but I found it by thinking of a few possible bands and searching for thematically plausible songs. Never heard of the Snow Patrol song; interesting that 3/4 top 40 hits called 'Chocolate' were in the same year :o 24/04/2004 Snow Patrol Chocolate 24 {24}-38-44-53-57-73->6 10/07/2004 Kylie Minogue Chocolate 6 {6}-18-27-33-40-45-57->7 18/09/2004 Soul Control Chocolate (Choco Choco) 25 {25}-45-62->3 23/02/2013 The 1975 Chocolate 19 71-54-42-24-21-{19}-19-21-19-27-26-25-30-46-53-51-69-69R(12)-47-52-64->21 I know far more Eurythmics songs than I used to (read: about 10 rather than 1) but not that one! I love 'Right By Your Side' from that album though.
November 24, 20231 yr for me SP-Chocolate was one of the easiest to get, maybe even the most instant EU-Who's That Girl That, surprised many didn't know it, it's a classic
November 24, 20231 yr Genius explains why its called Chocolate in the Sp song: According to an interview with The Sunday Times, Gary Lightbody wrote this song after he cheated on his girlfriend. I’d just cheated on my girlfriend — ex-girlfriend, obviously — I was going home and I just started writing it. Lightbody is reflecting upon the mistakes he’s done and regretting the decisions he’s made. He also explains that he’s apologizing to her, while at the same time accepting full responsibility for his actions and excuses. It’s about saying sorry and trying not to use the same old lame excuses. I am a cad and a bounder. I’ve always disappointed the people I’ve fallen in love with. He is aiming to become more mature and promises anything to start a new, fresh relationship. However, his previous mistakes will carry on with him, making it a challenge for him to make amends. Essentially, the song illustrates how Gary Lightbody’s whole life is like chocolate. His lies are addictive making everything about him seem sweet. When he gets caught, things get sticky. When things heat up, his lies melt, is afraid of losing his girlfriend and wants to regain her trust.
November 24, 20231 yr Author Four more coming with 9/20 correct, which was a very popular hit rate: Number 3: Lena - Satellite 12/06/2010 Lena Satellite 30 {30}-59->2 8QSgNM9yNjo The winner of Eurovision 2010, debunking the myth that it's impossible for Big 5 countries to win the modern competition. #30 in the chart was a reasonably strong showing for a Eurovision song in the download era. The following year she represented Germany again and finished 10th with "Taken By A Stranger". I used to confuse her with the German band Nena of 99 Luftballoons fame oops. 4 points: uptempo_owww!, DalekTurret32, chrissmith276, dandy*, LewisGT, PeteFromLeeds, Ansel, Rush, ~1^∞
November 24, 20231 yr Foo's, Snow Patrol and Eurythmics weren't immediate for me but managed to get them in the end. Lmao oops I haven't heard 'Satellite' since... 2010 and I wasn't a fan of it either hence why it'll have not stuck. The intro reminds me of a rap track again though 🤷♂️
November 24, 20231 yr Shall I confuse you further with the German-born singer Nina? :D NRTDgbdmNBU Always liked 'Satellite', surprised it didn't score higher as most people on this site have more Eurovision knowledge than I do!
November 24, 20231 yr Author 9/20: Number 4: Estelle - 1980 31/07/2004 Estelle 1980 14 {14}-18-23-33-41-50-69->7 k0ODOYNAuGM This was the autobiographical debut hit for the London singer, who later topped the charts with Kanye on "American Boy" but had fairly brief mainstream sucess. She has gone on to appear in various films and hosts "The Estelle Show" on Apple Music. 4 points: uptempo_owww!, Mangø, chrissmith276, Bjork, dandy*, LewisGT, paulgilb, jimwatts, Sarah
