It looks like 'Surround Sound' from JID's legendary 2022 record 'The Forever Story' is going viral and looks set to chart in a few places :heart: 'The Forever Story' is easily one of my favourite albums from the last decade so i'm so pleased to see this starting to get some recognition!

This really should have been a hit on its initial release so a very pleasant surprise to see it going viral now - although somewhat unfortunate timing for it since it'll have to contend with the Christmas takeover so hoping the moment will last long enough for it to become a proper hit in the new year.

The trend is quite an interesting one too! People tape their phone to the ceiling and film them dancing underneath, some of the videos to it have been very cool! Glad it’s a more unique trend not just a random dance boosting it

Both songs sample 'One Step Ahead' by Aretha Franklin :magic: (iirc J.I.D's use of it was more an homage to Mos Def's 'Ms. Fat Booty' which also uses the same sample).

 

Unrelated but I always thought it was a shame Baby Tate's 'verse' on this is so short, almost sounds like she did record a full verse but they ended up only using the first 4 lines then just cutting her off for the beat switch, it's a bit of a tease. It's not too late to drop an extended version :teresa:

That is exactly what happened. She released a video where she played her full verse and I remember reading something where she explained that it was originally meant to just be her as a feature but JID reworked the song and cut her verse short when he bagged 21 Savage as a feature.

I think it was a good decision. Her part on the track is short its the highlight for me. The rest of the verse is decent but it works best as just the bridge for me.

It debuts at #64 on the UK singles chart today (#53 excluding Christmas songs).

Re-entered the Hot 100 at #95 this week (it spent a week at #90 on its initial release).

Hindered by Christmas in the UK as it's down to #69 this week but up to #77 in the US.

It finally hits the top 40 at #35 this week becoming JID's 2nd (1st as a lead artist), 21 Savage's 10th and Baby Tate's 1st UK top 40 single :cheer:

:cheeseblock: thank god its top 40 chances wasn't killed by the Christmas invasion. I'm not sure it'll get much higher than this now but I can rest easy knowing he finally has a top 40 hit with something better than 'Enemy' x

 

Hopefully still has legs to reach a better peak in the US at least - it's got to #61 so far and currently #67 but presumably should jump a good amount with the Christmas songs clearing out there next week.

 

Aside, he posted '30 (Freestyle)' on YouTube the other day, the lyrics seem to tease towards him dropping 2 projects this year (a mixtape and an album), bring it on if so *.* 'The Forever Story' was preceded a couple of months before by '29 (Freestyle)' so hopefully the release of this means something dropping fairly imminently again!

 

'30 (Freestyle)' is a masterclass in lyricism! Apparently his new album is going to be called 'Forever & A Day' and I assume the mixtape he is talking about is the highly-teased Metro Boomin project?

 

Hopefully both these projects get released this year (although I don't have my hopes up for the Metro project dropping this year).
