I'm not a Grinch but I do struggle to enjoy the annual Christmas takeover in the charts.

Absolutely fine to not enjoy the Christmas takeover. I just don’t think it’s denying us a “better” chart - the chart without it would be even less interesting, plus less representative.

Oop somebody else said it first. Might as well check out of chart watching til January is also what came to my mind.

I don't actually care if some old Christmas classic improves it's peak position by one place or whatever (unless it were to be FONY which it won't) and it's not like anything else of interest is going to happen for a whole ass month. I guess i'll be vaguely interested to see how the Kunts perform with a more radio-friendly attempt.

quite a few, Kylie-Tension Extension thing, has vinyls so will sell lots

then there's Tate McRae, also a new Killers compilation

on a normal week Nicki might do something in the singles chart, but not now with the Xmas invasion, no chance
24 Christmas songs in last year's equivalent Monday update, 31 this year.

It has actually made a big difference December 1st being on a Friday. The final chart might not be quite so Christmas heavy.

But then again, maybe only 2 out of Olivia, Mitski and Casso replacing Meghan and possibly Nat King Cole - as the lower end of the top 40 is less Christmas heavy.

funny how the person that complains all day every day every 5 fricking minutes

about the charts, anything, to the point that I even worry about their health

now calls other people "grinch" hahahaha

To be fair if there was a holiday chart or something along those lines, artists would be more willing to release music so it would be more exciting I think.

Exactly, when the Christmas season was pre streaming then radio stations still played Christmas music most of the time (although prob not from 1st November) but current artists would still release original Christmas songs or just big tracks which all competed for the Christmas no.1s. I just see these Spotify playlists as radio airplay because people find the playlist and press play. I mean Band Aid was played every Christmas in memory but we didn't have to see that top 10 in the chart each year and no one complained then.

I do get the sense that this is probably going to be the last Christmas with such a huge takeover of the oldies. The general fatigue for the usual suspects - Wham, Mariah etc - is stronger and louder this year that OCC can't possibly ignore it for 2024.

I foresee it where there's a seperate Christmas catalogue chart for any festive song that's older than the last 10 maybe 15 years.

People say this every year. It'll probably just be even bigger next year.

I predict "No changes" in chart rules.

Just watch on situation in any other country (US, Germany, Australia, Netherlands e.t.c.) in streaming era. They are "very happy" to have Mariah at # 1 almost every year.

At least UK have ACR and had LadBaby charity singles.

It's only 5 weeks... and it's not like people don't release at all - last year SZA released her smash hit album in the middle of December.

Also, January is now busier month, thanks to the Christmas song takeover in December.

Only 5 weeks ....ok. lmao that's such a lame excuse, it's still a whole.month and a half, I'd say moreso 6 weeks!

Yes SZA released then, as are Tate and Nicki next week but it's still off-putting to many artists to release then. You only have to look at the release schedule to see that.

I don't and can't understand why people are advocating for the ancient Christmas songs in eveeeerrrry single year, it's weird.

Surely if Wham get the Xmas #1 two years running the OCC will decide to do something about it. As someone mentioned, it's pretty much the only big story they have each year to bring attention to the charts, but if it started happening every year it would become a non-story.

If it weren't for LadBaby we'd have had:

2020 Mariah

2021 Ed/Elton

2022 Wham

2023 (likely) Wham

Honestly though, what can they really do? Give Jack Harlow the Xmas #1 this year when it'll likely be something like the 46th most popular song of the week? Seems a bit pointless.

Also - it's "only 5 weeks" but that means every decade, a whole year's worth of charts are dominated by Xmas music in virtually the same order. To me that sounds like a lot.

I don't think it's fair to call advocating for the Christmas songs to be represented in the chart "weird". For me, whilst it's certainly not that exciting, I do think it's only fair that all songs get represented in more or less the same way. ACR is implemented and OCC are strict on its use for Xmas songs, too. A separate Christmas chart wouldn't feel fair, but I understand why people find them to be frustrating in the main chart too. There's no easy solution IMO.

I don't think a catalogue chart would change artists' attitudes to releasing in December, though. People would still be streaming them en masse, meaning there's precious few non-festive streams to fight over.
