This is basically the American version of Mimi Webb's 'House On Fire'. The concept is pretty much the same but what sets this one above is the adlib in the chorus that resembles the sound of a fire engine. It's a bit silly but it's one of the catchiest parts of any song in 2023. I liked Mimi's song but it felt like there was something missing and I was never able to pinpoint what. It turns out it was this! Some of her other ones so far are more in the guilty pleasure camp but there's no guilt about this one, it's just a straight-up massive BANGER.

Jorja Smith was one of the biggest disappointments for me in 2023. I absolutely adore her voice, her last EP 'Be Right Back' was solid and her debut album has been sounding better and better every time I listen to it. However, 'Falling or Flying' turned out to be pretty dull, three of the four pre-album releases were mid and her wonderful voice even began to falter with the tepid cover of 'Stay Another Day' for Amazon. To top it all off, I wasn't even able to get a ticket to see her at her show at the Albert Hall in Manchester. However, we at least got one banger from her in 'Little Things'. It promised big things as it's an awesome track and a great sound for her to experiment with. I'm still here for Jorja's next era but it needs to be more 'Little Things' and less of the filler.

Charli served us up a short dose of excitement and nostalgia for the soundtrack to 2023's biggest movie, Barbie, with 'Speed Drive'. It may be under two minutes, but Charli have crafted it to perfection and fits in everything the track needs to leave an impression. Continuing the car theme from the iconic 'Vroom Vroom', this is exactly what you picture when you hear 'Barbie' and 'Charli XCX' in the same sentence. Sorry Baby Tate, but this was the best Toni Basil sampling track to reach the charts in 2023.

During the actual Eurovison contest, this was nowhere near my favourites. I don't think Blanka's performance was all that good. It felt like it was trying to recreate 'SloMo' from the year before and she sounded like she was trying to sound like Britney Spears. It fell a bit flat, but it totally came to life when I heard the studio version. It's a really infections track just puts you in a good mood. I remember reading that this was higly controversial when it won the right to be Poland's Eurovision entry with accusations of rigging. I've just listened to the track that was the favourite to win over this and it is a right racket. The right decision was made!

I think 'Lucky' might be Leah's best song. It's the highest of the 'Super Over' album tracks to appear. It has a catchy hook, bubbly production and nice vocals. It's just a really good pop song from an artist who gets far too much undeserved hate. Two more tracks from Leah as she looks to beat out last year's position of #44.

The second and final appearance for Addison Rae with the massive bop 'it could've been u'. Apparently the production has got a major overhaul on this one compared to the leaked version and it appears to have worked a treat. The banging beat and the synths sound awesome. This is the fun, doesn't-take-itself-too-seriously pop that I always love and feels like something Addison should be able to build a music career off. She's won me over anyway.

'Coming Of Age' was an instant highlight from 'The Good Witch' and entered straight into a top 3 position on release week. The pumping dance bassline was not something I was expecting which made this track stick out all the more. A banging outro leaves you on a high too. Maisie continues to flex what a witty writer she is with countless memorable lines already at this point on the album on what is only the 2nd song on the track-list. The 'Iliad' line is what comes to mind first if I try to think of a 'Good Witch' lyric. 2023 was a great year for #1s in my chart, we've now reached the half-way point without seeing any of them dropout.

The last entry for today and it's our first dip into the top half of this countdown. The title track from Leah Kate's debut album, 'Super Over' feels a bit Olivia Rodrigo inspired with some rockier elements and the cluster of instruments that make up the little interlude after the chorus, especially, are really fun. Leah was the star of the first half of my countdown but that run is due to end with only one more song to come.

Solo is such a fun bop, feel like it doesn't get the love it deserves! Speed Drive is of course amazing, and Addison's EP was a revelation!
Little Things is great, always here for slightly more pop Jorja! Speed Drive was a real Barbie highlight for me and it's been great watching Charli get a BIG smash again after so long. Solo is a bop and kinda iconic, echoing the love for Addison's EP, it's a great bit of quick fun pop!

The hit with the catchiest title of the year 'Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53' lands at #49 for Shakira and, newcomer to my charts, Bizarrap. This is the best I've heard from Shakira since it was time for Africa and it was pretty iconic to see this Spanish disstrack be what brought her back to the UK charts. I might not understand any of what's been said but it doesn't stop me from being able to tell that Gerard Piqué is getting burned badly, That's what you get for ditching United to go back to Barcelona in 2008, Piqué. This was so huge at the time, breaking records left, right and centre but it lost stream throughout the year and this is my first listen to it for quite a while.

That's quite the run of break-up songs there! Little Things is a song with a decent beat though - not watched the music video before, the interviews in the middle certinly bring something different to it!

The first of four entries for Madison Beer this year is 'Sweet Relief'. This charted for a few weeks an album track before it was officially chosen as the last single in October and received it's official video. It's a track that has a surprisingly bouncy bassline that you wouldn't expect but it works well to create a nice pace in the song. I really appreciate that she's not really chasing trends and developing hew own style. She's also consistently been releasing interesting, high-concept music videos but this one fell a bit flat. The song is still great though!

Haha yeah, I didn't realise but that was about 6 songs in a row that were reflecting on finished relationships from 'Solo' to 'Bzrp...'. At least 'Sweet Relief' is about the start of one instead

'Little Things' does have an interesting concept, definitely has a goo beat too!

We're back to the break-up songs with Maisie Peters's 'Yoko'. I first heard this pre-release as Maisie played it acoustically as part of the VIP pre-show of her show in Liverpool. The venue was just next door to the 'Yellow Submarine Bar' so it just felt right hearing this there. The studio version had a lot to live up to and it managed it. This is my favourite ballad from Maisie with the parallels between the Beatles references and the themes of inexperience and immaturity working surprisingly well.

It's hard to picture that Snoop Dogg was once that gnagsta that released 'Doggystyle' and hung around with Dre. Nowadays when you think of Snoop, all you think about is weed and that is what makes him the perfect feature on 'Satellite'. I didn't want to like this one, it just feels so tryhard hearing Bebe sing about 'smoking a bowl' until she blacks-out but the chorus is so infectious that I couldn't help falling for it. Snoop sounds like he's having a blast too. It's rare to see him this engaged on a verse this side of the 2000s. The awkward, phoned-in acting at the start of the video is pretty brilliant.

I have a confession to make, I've actually only heard the original to this once. :kink: It's definitely the Charli/George remix that impacted my charts. I'm a complete sucker for Charli's white-girl rap and this is the epitome of the genre. The only issue with this is that it's far too short. The chorus is good but too much of the track is devoted to it. I'd take another 5 verses and still be wanting more. If this had a third verse and cut out some of the outro, it would have been a huge contender in the upper echelons of this chart. I hope Charli's upcoming album is more of this sound and less 'In The City'.
