This was SO SO SOOOOO good! I really can't recommend it enough. I was so, so pleasantly surprised by it! Genuinely funny (full on hearty, belly laughs) and just a really sharp, witty and extremely smart script and story! Amazing performances all around and the social commentary on consumerism is... expertly crafted.

 

I would probably avoid the trailer personally and go in as blind as possible!

Looking forward to seeing this, especially with Sterling in it

But anyway… I don’t think it will matter as I had an idea of what the film was about already. Definitely planning on seeing this, have been discussing it at work and we all think it has a great premise

 

edit: although saying that, I can’t find many places it is being shown at. So frustrating how limited access is to films that aren’t Wonka/Mean Girls/Migration etc

I saw this last night and it's very good albeit I think I would've benefitted from not watching the trailer as a lot of the funniest parts were there.

 

It's a lot more serious than I was expecting too, and while it was well acted and emotional, it did feel a bit like two different movies and it just wasn't as interesting when it wasn't taking stabs at the publishing and Hollywood industry. That was still really great though, I was so surprised the book it's based on was from 2001, it still feels so relevant today not just to books but also every academy acclaimed black film being one about slavery or historic racial injustice. My favourite line has to be

when the white judge says 'it's so important we listen to black voices right now' when they literally just ignored the views of the two black people in the room

 

 

But yeah, I just found too much emphasis was on the family drama which felt overwrought especially with

the sister's death, the mother's Alzheimers and the brother's sexuality all at the same time, I understand it needed to show that he needed the money and a slice of life, but I don't think it worked as well as it wanted

, I just found myself waiting for the satire to start again, and it makes it ironically more pandering to the academy given the subject matter. Still definitely worth watching, just not quite as great as it could've been,
