The current number 1 had zero expectations to be top 10 let alone 6 weeks at number 1.

To be honest the only thing I'd "expect" to be #1 first week (for example) would be a Taylor Swift lead single. I can't really think of any other artist at the moment who would be an almost guaranteed #1. It's up in the air for pretty much any other artist. And the same goes for top 10s although I guess the list of artists I'd expect it for is slightly longer than just Taylor Swift lol. Even The Weeknd recently had a song that took like 6 months to reach the top 10. And I know Beyonce is probably about to get a #1 but equally a Beyonce song can easily miss the top 40.

Because certain big artist don't focus on the UK market as their most important when it comes to first week. Dua Lipa certainly does (should I say her label do). Everything has been thrown at the wall this 1st week, 3 physicals, video, playlisting, about 5 different versions. Dua/the record label want a big high 1st week with number 1 being the ultimate goal.

Let's not forget for all the 11 weeks A list radio 1, 3 physicals, loads of versions, playlisting, weeks on end radio airplay number 1, Houdini did one week top 5 in the UK chart its 1st week.

Dua has literally never debuted at #1. There is no precedent for Training Season to be heading there either. Doesn't mean they won't try for the highest position possible, but to make out she's flopping by not being #1 is ridiculous.

^^

Seriously lol.

Certain people making it sound as if her new single only debuted at #108 on Spotify chart!!!

And as if she's not allowed to release vinyls, CD's and what not to achieve a good high debut position!!! Billie, Olivia, Taylor, Ed, Lewis and you name it, they all do it but somehow it's such a big deal when Dua does it?!!!

^^

Taylor only did it with albums and well they wouldn't made difference on where she debuted, and you must be new to buzzjack if you missed the uproar everytime ED or Lewis does it

No one said she cant do it, just people need to stop being all 'the expectations are low for Dua first week' they aren't. When those artists you named release physicals the label are gunning for number 1. Dua Lipa/her label are no different.

Anyone who thinks Dua/her label aren't trying to line up to debut at number 1 are fooling themselves. That is the goal, you don't throw everything at the wall first week to hope it eventually takes off later.

Because as a fan of hers I know the expectations aren't the same as Ed/Lewis/Taylor/Billie with their huge fan base...she heavily relies on general public!!!

I'm not delusional to think she has this big fan base that will have her debut #1 with each and every release!!!

Dua's case is different and you should know her biggest hits from FN never hit #1 (DSN and Levitating) but they both were long lasting hits.

I think the problem with people here is that they're not being able to differentiate how one artist's (debuts, chart positions, longevity) is different from one another and putting everyone in the same box just creates a narrative that Dua is flopping each and every time when she doesn't land at #1!!!

You just want her to fail so badly. It's pathetic.

She is a big artist, she gets everything a top big artist gets straight off the bat now. Huge playlisting, instant A list radio 1, big hype, top of NMF playlist and so on.

The Dua releasing now is not the successful but not A list artist. As I said Houdini did one week top 5 and it was its release week. Everything was set up for her to debut number 1 only a better more popular song came along and Houdini wasn't strong enough.

She tries to debut #1 but she ends up at #2, it's still a success regardless how you're trying to frame it!!!

Who says it isn't successful (just not as big as the support and hype it got), but she is in the big leagues now and should be judged that way.

I cant even begin to think of another song that did 11 weeks A list on radio 1 to only do one week top 5 of the chart. She is getting huge support right now and with that comes huge expectations. Whether you like it or not.

Yes it's time for another round of insisting a song will be an easy #1 so we can call it a flop when it isn't x

:smoke:

The fact that we have this discussion literally every time a new release by a well known artist doesn't go straight to #1 should really be the hint that people are setting expectations unrealistically high (yes, even for 'A-Listers').

It's especially laughable that people keep doing this for Dua who has debuted at #1 a grand total of zero times ever (even her album didn't debut at #1).

This is such a silly statement. Artists get more popular, Rihanna never hit number 1 from her first two albums. Then it was almost expected she would with a lead single from her albums once Umbrella/Good girl gone bad took her to being huge.

Also with the way the charts are now, physicals playing a big part in chart peaks, releasing 5 different versions of a song, artists have control over which week to target number one when they employ those things. Dua's label seems to be going for first week.

Not to mention how the equivalent single last era, Physical, didn't reach the top 10 until week 6...!!!

Not to mention a factor that no one seems to bring up (certainly not anyone chomping at the bit to tear down Queen Peep's success...), Dua is making music for a NICHE AUDIENCE of people with actual taste (I.e. NOT the general public), her recent hits boasting production from Kevin Parker and Danny L Harle should be enough to confirm that...

If she solely wanted #1s and nothing else she could easily chuck out a cheap love island dance tune with a Blue Da Ba Dee interpolation for the normies and casuals to flock after, but she instead focuses on delivering us a higher standard of pop music, at the risk of her own commercial success....such are the ways of a TRUE artist.

.....and with all this taken to account, she's still able to score Top 5 debuts and outsell all your basic faves. Can you show me where exactly the "flop" is located? It doesn't appear to be in the room with us...

but I disagree bout predicting people are gonna debut at #1

especially with Dua

Houdini had the bad luck that Jack Harlow out of the blue released o nthe same day

but had Houdini been released any of the last weeks when Kenya- Strangers was on top, Houdini would have debuted at #1

Future Nostalgia made Dua a superstar so it's 100% normal to predict her lead for the next album is gonna be #1

and it was just bad luck that it didn't

I think it’s fine to predict Dua would debut at no1 given the status of her currently following the hugely successful FN era but not that she’s a fillip if she doesn’t enter at the top!
