Posted March 28, 20241 yr Inspired by Jessie Where's post in another thread about 'Man in the Mirror' reaching #2 by just 1 copy, it would be interesting to discover/discuss other hits (or flops) that very narrowly reached their peak in the 2000s. I can remember 'Foundations' being denied the #1 from 'Umbrella' by something like 20 copies* but unsure of any songs that reached their peak by a similar margin.
March 28, 20241 yr Technically just before the 2000s but first thing that sprang to mind was that I think Westlife's If I Let You Go just beat Alice Deejay's Better Off Alone. Also wasn't Foundations denied by The Way I Are? Could be misremembering there... Edited March 28, 20241 yr by Dobbo
March 28, 20241 yr Foundations was kept from the top initially by Umbrella and then The Way I Are swooped in and held it off #1 too
March 28, 20241 yr Pretty sure Jordin Sparks would have been close on many of her times peaking at 11 with 'Battlefield' but can't say for sure.
March 28, 20241 yr Author 02 Rihanna 32,991 03 Shakira 32,322 02 Rihanna 24,792 03 Christina 24,581 Rihanna narrowly made #2 both times with 'Unfaithful'. Though it's still a few hundred difference. :kink: Pretty sure Jordin Sparks would have been close on many of her times peaking at 11 with 'Battlefield' but can't say for sure. Oh yes I think you might be right.
March 28, 20241 yr 2. Jay Z & Mr Hudson - Supernova 56,638 3. Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling 56,524
March 28, 20241 yr I believe the Rui Da Silva vs Steps top 2 in Jan 2001 was a few hundred copies in it, and the Steps song had leaked slightly early and a number of sales more than the difference had been credited to the previous week. Aaliyah vs Puretone in Jan 2002 also a few hundred.
March 28, 20241 yr Author Just checked and it was Timbaland! 01 Rihanna 22,143 02 Kate Nash 22,012 (131 copies behind) Then a couple weeks later 01 Timbaland 33,578 02 Kate Nash 33,562 (16 copies behind) Poor Nash.

March 28, 20241 yr I believe the Rui Da Silva vs Steps top 2 in Jan 2001 was a few hundred copies in it, and the Steps song had leaked slightly early and a number of sales more than the difference had been credited to the previous week. It wasn't, I'll try and find the sales for it but it wasn't that close and the sales it got the previous week wouldn't have made the difference.
March 28, 20241 yr GA got their 20th consecutive top 10 by only 520 copies! 10 Girls Aloud (TLK) 19,655 11 Kanye (Heartless) 19,135 Well I'm glad they made it then. One of their more underrated tracks!
March 28, 20241 yr It wasn't, I'll try and find the sales for it but it wasn't that close and the sales it got the previous week wouldn't have made the difference. 1- TOUCH ME - Rui Da Silva Ft Cassandra (68,471) 2- IT'S THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL/ TOO BUSY THINKIN BOUT MY BABY - Steps (52,000) 3- EVERYTIME YOU NEED ME - Fragma Ft Maria Ruba (51,000)
March 28, 20241 yr Author Well I'm glad they made it then. One of their more underrated tracks! It’s such a gem. it makes me wonder whether Untouchable failed to make top 10 by a fraction.
March 28, 20241 yr It’s such a gem. it makes me wonder whether Untouchable failed to make top 10 by a fraction. 10 Beyonce 24,591 11 Girls Aloud 21,708
March 28, 20241 yr It wasn't, I'll try and find the sales for it but it wasn't that close and the sales it got the previous week wouldn't have made the difference. Yeah it was actually the Puretone vs Aaliyah case where that applied. Addicted To Bass debuted at #68 due to premature sales and then lost out by 500.
March 29, 20241 yr Author 10 Beyonce 24,591 11 Girls Aloud 21,708 It wasn't that close in the end then! Same Jeans narrowly beaten Too Little Too Late back in January 2007 and that was the week they both peaked. 03 The View 22,500 04 JoJo 22,000
March 29, 20241 yr Girls Aloud ballsed up big time; they thought one cd single would be enough as The Promise did so well with one cd. The Loving Kind and Untouchable would have charted higher with two cds. Quite an obvious statement really but they had the fanbase to make the difference of a few hundred sales.
March 29, 20241 yr Author Booty Luv made #2 by the skin of their teeth with a difference of 31 copies! 02 Booty Luv - Boogie 2nite 19,057 03 Akon feat. Eminem - Smack That 19,026
