FAQs

What is streaming? What are the chart rules regarding streaming?

For streaming and chart rules related FAQs read this thread.

How many streams equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread.

How much does streaming contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole. Spotify counts for at least half of this, with Apple Music and Amazon also big contributors. YouTube is also big however most of YouTube's streams are at the free tier so won't count for as much.

Why is my fave not doing well?

Is it being promoted on a major curated playlist, and/or going viral on TikTok? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists on Spotify from a UK standpoint. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist. Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped releases, such as the recent album impacts from Drake and Taylor Swift.

Spotify

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. For the full top 200, use the link below to go to Spotify's website. You can also use the Kworb website which displays the data in an easier to read format and also contains additional information, however this is often out of date.

Kworb [top 200 and extra data]

What are the most influential Spotify playlists?

Links to Spotify's top playlists are as below.

Hot Hits UK

UK Top 50

New Music Friday

Today's Top Hits

How often does the Spotify chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although on occasion there will be a delay.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Apple Music

How do I see today's Apple Music chart?

You can use the link below to view the Apple Music top 100 through Kworb. If you have Apple Music, you can also view the top 200 by going to the Charts section and clicking on See All in the Top Songs section.

How often does the Apple Music chart update?

It like iTunes updates on a regular basis a number of times a day. No streaming figures are provided however, unlike Spotify.

Amazon

How do I see today's Amazon Music chart?

You can use the link below to view the Amazon Music chart.

How often does the Amazon Music chart update?

It like iTunes updates on a regular basis a number of times a day. No streaming figures are provided however, unlike Spotify.

Excited to see how Perrie and Dua do (though not a huge fan of Illusion on first listen) - Forget About Us is the smash that needs to happen though!
Are we expecting any big Amy Winehouse increases? The biopic Back to Black is released today isn’t it? I’ve seen mixed reviews but can imagine it perhaps giving her some boosts with the attention it’ll get especially as she was taken so young her back catalogue is relatively small so the impact might be more significant.

Mixed reviews didn’t hurt Bob Marley! Music biopics always get these kind of reviews but usually end up smashing all the time. I would expect some kind of boost, but less so on streaming and more directly in albums charts.
Dua's single is a bit meh on first listen. Colour me underwhelmed. I can't see it smashing but maybe it will scrape low top 10. Perrie's single sounds like it could do well, I'd definitely expect her to outpeak Leigh-Anne.

NMF

1 Dua Lipa - Ilusion

2 Nia Archives - Cards on the Table

3 Perrie

4 Fred again

5 Kasabian

6 D Block Europe - Kiki

7 Sabrina - Espresso

10 Future & Metro Boomin

11 Mimi Webb - Mistake

HH has Michael Marcagi as cover and moved him to track #1 ka-ching :)

super high add for Dua as track #5, wasn't expecting that as it's the 3rd single from the album

HH also added Perrie but quite low

they also added Chappell Roan-Good luck babe

New Future x Metro is 25 tracks.

Do people actually care enough to listen to all that?

Perrie has physicals, CD, cassette and vinyl singles and of course a bundle with them all

but not sure if out today

Dua doesn't seem to have physicals this time?

Would happily welcome a massive Amy boost even if it were just one song. I guess 'Back to Black' will be the obvious song to do well, and perhaps Valerie and Rehab. Also, I heard that the music in the film is sung by the actress rather than Amy's original vocals (bad choice imo but maybe they couldn't get the rights?) so I guess that could make people want to seek out the original after watching the film.

In the US for sure but doubtful for the UK. Given they just released a project it does seem like overkill

The director has said that they did have the rights to use Amy's vocals, surprisingly. I suppose suddenly using someone else's vocals might've been a bit jarring though.

True but then it's not like Amy's singing voice was similar to her talking voice.

781k for Hozier today a new high again and closing in on 800k I’d say 900k seems very possible

Yeah… 800K and gaining, there is a strong chance she won’t even be one day at number 1 on Spotify. It’s SS big. Glad for him anyway…
Not a big fan of that 'These Words' remix (not really a fan of the original either ) but happy to see this random Natasha relevance in 2024. To think even by 2009 she was kind of seen as irrelevant (in the UK at least).

I've been absolutely rinsing 'Happier' this week, I think I may have found my early tune of the summer. I'll be keeping a close eye on its progress and hoping for a future top 10!

On the other hand, can somebody please stop that Natasha remix progressing any further? :drama:
